6 New Movies This Week, Including: ‘The Batman’, ‘Fresh’, and ‘The Weekend Away’
International humanitarian organization CARE has set up an emergency Ukrainian Crisis Fund with the goal of providing immediate support for 4 million people. Donations will go toward providing Ukrainians with water, food, supplies, hygiene kits, immediate support and aid, and cash. CARE notes that its prioritizing supporting women, girls, families, and elderly. CARE makes it easy to donate via its website using PayPal or a credit card.There are some great new movies this week to check out!
This week the movie everyone has been waiting for, The Batman starring Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader and Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman.
Here’s the rundown of new movies this week that are coming out in theaters, as well as those releasing on the major streaming platforms.
New Movies Coming Out This Week February 28 – March 5, 2022
The Batman (2022)
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: In theaters nationwide on Friday, March 4, 2022.
Summary: Undoubtedly the most anticipated movie of the year, The Batman is about the Caped Crusader, Batman (Robert Pattinson), in his second year of fighting crime, uncovering corruption in Gotham City that connects to his own family while battling a criminal known as The Riddler for control of his city.
What to Watch For: Filmmaker Matt Reeves wrote the role of Batman with Robert Pattinson in mind without even knowing if Pattinson would be interested in the part.
Word on the Street: The impressive cast includes Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Colin Farrell as The Penguin, Paul Dano as The Riddler, and Andy Serkis as Alfred.
My Take: I am excited to see Robert Pattinson as Batman and thrilled that this is the start of a trilogy of Batman films.
Fresh (2022)
Rating: R
Release Date: Premiering on the Hulu platform on Friday, March 4, 2022.
Summary: In Fresh, Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is tired of the dating scene and has given up trying to find a good guy until she meets Steve (Sebastian Stan), a charming guy who seems to be perfect. However, Noa is about to discover that dating can be horrible, even horrific.
What to Watch For: This is the first feature film for director Mimi Cave, known for directing music videos for LunchMoney Lewis, Lucius, and Sylvan Esso.
Word on the Street: Jojo T. Gibbs plays Noa’s best friend and confidant Mollie in Fresh. Gibbs has been getting outstanding reviews from critics for her role as Hattie in the Showtime TV series Twenties.
My Take: I am always ready for a good horror/suspense film.
The Weekend Away (2022)
Rating: N/A
Release Date: Premiering on the Netflix platform on Thursday, March 3, 2002.
Summary: The Weekend Away is about Beth (Leighton Meester), on a weekend vacation, away from her husband and baby to visit her best friend Kate (Christina Wolfe) in Croatia. After a night of partying, Beth discovers that Kate has been murdered. Consequently, Beth is in a foreign country with no friends, the main suspect for Kate’s death, and no way of knowing what happened.
What to Watch For: Leighton Meester, acting since her teens, is best known as Blair Waldorf in the TV series Gossip Girl.
Word on the Street: The film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Sarah Alderson.
My Take: I have been a fan of Leighton Meester since she appeared on a couple of episodes of Veronica Mars.
Lucy And Desi (2022)
Rating: PG
Release Date: Premiering on the Amazon Prime platform on Friday, March 4, 2022.
Summary: In Lucy and Desi, this documentary explores the life and love of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, who became one of the most prolific power couples in entertainment and changed TV forever.
What to Watch For: This is the first documentary that Emmy-award-winning actress Amy Poehler has directed. She previously the films Moxie (2021), Wine Country (2019), and several episodes of her hit TV series Parks and Recreation.
Word on the Street: The film uses home movies and interviews with Lucy and Desi, along with interviews with Desi Arnaz Jr., Lucie Arnaz, Carol Burnett, Bette Midler, and Norman Lear.
My Take: After seeing Being the Ricardos, I am interested to see what made up this dynamic couple.
After Yang (2021)
Rating: PG
Release Date: In select theaters and streaming on the Showtime platform on Friday, March 4, 2022.
Summary: After Yang is about a family in the near future dealing with the breakdown of their A.I. helper named Yang (Justin H. Min). Jake (Colin Farrell) searches for a way to get Yang repaired, who has become an integral part of their family and Jake’s daughter’s beloved companion. Jake will soon discover that this life is full of wonder and discoveries.
What to Watch For: Significantly, the film was nominated for the Un Certain Regard Award at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival and won the Alfred Pl Sloan Feature Film Prize at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
Word on the Street: The film is from acclaimed filmmaker Kogonada known for his award-winning 2017 film Columbus.
My Take: It’s going to be an interesting week to see two Colin Farrell performances in one week. Farrell also stars as The Penguin in The Batman.
Huda’s Salon (2021)
Rating: R
Release Date: In select theaters and On-Demand on Friday, March 4, 2022.
Summary: Huda’s Salon tells the story of Reem (Maisa Abd Elhadi), a Palestinian woman with a newborn and an abusive husband. Reem’s life changes forever on a routine visit to her hairdresser, Huda (Manal Awad).
What to Watch For: The film is from Hany Aub-Assad, the Palestinian/Dutch filmmaker, whose past work includes Academy Award-nominated films Paradise Now (2006) and Omar (2014).
Word on the Street: The film has played at several film festivals, including the Nashville Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival.
My Take: I loved Abu-Assad’s film Omar, so I will definitely see this thriller.
