Will There Be an ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Season 2 on Disney+? Lucasfilm President, Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, and More Weigh In.
Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series wrapped up last week, with its final episode debuting on Wednesday, June 22, 2022. The series concluded with a strong finale. However, it left fans with a few big questions, including: will there be an Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 on Disney+?
While Obi-Wan Kenobi was always intended to be a mini-series, a second season might not be out of question according to Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy.
“Well, frankly, we did set out to do that as a limited series. But I think if there’s huge engagement and people really want more Obi-Wan, we’ll certainly give that consideration because the fans, they speak to us. And if we feel like, ‘OK, there’s a real reason to do this; it’s answering the why then,’ then we’ll do it. But we’ll see.” Kennedy reveals to Entertainment Tonight.
Obi-Wan Kenobi Was Supposed to Be a Movie
The Star Wars franchise has been on a roll with five recent films that have crossed over the one billion dollar mark at the box office worldwide. However, after 2018’s first spin-off from the series, Solo, only made $390 million (the first Star Wars film to lose money), Disney and Lucasfilm decided to explore additional stores on the smaller screens. This tactic has worked well for The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. Not to mention, there are still quite a few more series in the pipeline.
So Will There Be an Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 on Disney+?
Star Ewan McGregor says that he would like to make a second season of the series. And he’s not the only cast member to say that.
“It was made as a one-off limited series. And in a way, it does do what I wanted it to do in terms of bridging a story between [Episode 3] and [Episode 4] and bringing me closer to Alec Guinness’ Obi-Wan in A New Hope,” McGregor tells Entertainment Weekly. “Would I like to make another one? Yeah, I would like to make another one.”
For McGregor, he thoroughly enjoyed the project. Working with director Deborah Chow, his fellow castmates, as well as the crew was a great experience, “I can’t tell you. It was so wonderful to work on. I couldn’t wait to get to work every day, and on a long shoot like this, that’s something. Right to the end, I just loved the experience of it.” McGregor says.
Hayden Christensen also echos McGregor’s feelings, revealing to RadioTimes, “It was definitely conceived as a standalone story. But I would love to continue with this character.”
“You know, I think there’s certainly more there to explore and I would be so excited to get to do so,” Christensen continues, admitting that if there was an Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2, he would certainly be interested.
However, the director of all six episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Deborah Chow, seems to be less into the idea of future seasons.
“For this one, we really did conceive it to be a limited series,” Chow tells Entertainment Tonight. “It really is one big story with a beginning, middle, and end. So, we weren’t thinking past that. I think, you know, if it was to go forward, it would only be if there was a real reason for another.”
Room for More Stories?
With how the 6 episode mini series wraps up, there is still a sizable amount of time between “current events” and A New Hope. So there is clearly room for more stories to tell. And regardless of whether or not there is an Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2, the series set up a number of opportunities for additional spin-offs, specifically with Reva (as Forbes points out) and maybe even a Darth Vader series.
While there is no Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 planned at the moment, it’s not out of the question. If anything changes, we’ll let you know! In the meantime, we’re in countdown mode until the next Star Wars series debuts on Disney+. Andor premieres its first two episodes on August 31. The 12 episode series will follow the story of rebel spy, Cassian Andor.
