5 New Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘Pinocchio’ and More!

What new movies are coming out this week? There’s something for everyone this week with a family classic tale, a horror film, and an action thriller. There’s also a rom-com and even an award-winning foreign film!

We have a retelling of Pinocchio with Tom Hanks as Geppetto. Then a horror film in Barbarian that is getting all the buzz. Queen Latifah’s latest flick, End of the Road, where she’s on the run from a killer. And Emma Roberts in a new romantic comedy.

Here’s the rundown of new movies coming out this week in theaters, as well as those releasing on the major streaming platforms.

New Movies Coming Out This Week September 5 – September 11, 2022

Pinocchio   (2022)

Rating: PG

Release Date: Premieres on the Disney+ platform on Thursday, September 8, 2022.

Summary: Pinocchio is the beloved tale of the wooden puppet who goes on an adventure to become a real boy.

What to Watch For: The film combines live action and CGI.

Word on the Street: The cast includes Tom Hanks as Geppetto, Joseph Gordon-Levitt voicing Jiminy Cricket, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth voicing Pinocchio, Lorraine Bracco voicing Sofia, and Keegan-Michael Key voicing Honest John.

My Take: The film is by Academy Award filmmaker Robert Zemeckis (Forest Gump).

Barbarian    (2022)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, September 9, 2022.

Summary: Barbarian is about a woman (Georgian Campbell) who rents an Airbnb to find that someone else is already living there. Subsequently, she reluctantly stays the night, only to find that the home has hidden secrets that could cost her more than the rent.

What to Watch For: Filmmaker Zach Cregger is best known for co-creating and directing the TV show The Whitest Kids U’Know.

Word on the Street: After Zac Efron turned down the role of AJ, director/writer Zach Cregger retooled the part and gave it to Justin Long.

My Take: One of my favorite actors who plays a great villain is Bill Skarsgård, and I can’t wait to see his role in this film.

End of the Road

End of the Road   (2022)

Rating: R

Release Date: Premiers on the Netflix platform on Friday, September 9, 2022.

Summary: End of the Road is about Brenda (Queen Latifah), her brother Reggie (Ludacris), and Brenda’s two kids, who are on a cross-country trip. In an isolated motel, they witness a murder. Thereafter, they become the killer’s target, and Brenda will have to fight to keep her family alive.

What to Watch For: Queen Latifah is hot off her role as The Equalizer on CBS.

Word on the Street: This is the first feature film for director Millicent Shelton, who has directed Queen Latifah on The Equalizer and was nominated for an Emmy for her direction of the hit TV show 30 Rock.

My Take: The trailer looks like this could be a good thriller.

Summary: About Fate is a tale of two people (Emma Roberts and Thomas Mann) who have always believed in love but have never been able to find its true meaning. A chance encounter puts them together, and the two go on an adventure that will change their lives. Finally, they just might find out what love truly is.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the play ‘Happy Steam-Bathing! Once, On a New Year’s Eve…’.

Word on the Street: The supporting cast includes Lewis Tan, Madelaine Petsch, Britt Robertson, Cheryl Hines, and Wendie Malick.

My Take: I am always in the mood for a rom-com.

Private Desert   (2021)

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, September 9, 2022.

Summary: Private Desert is about Daniel (Antonio Saboia), a policeman suspended after a violent incident, and his world is crashing down around him. Daniel holds onto the one good thing in his life, his online girlfriend, Sara. When Sara disappears, Daniel travels 2000 miles to find a woman he has never met.

What to Watch For: The film won Best Film at the 2021 Venice Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film is Brazil’s official selection in the Best International Film category at the 2022 Academy Awards.

My Take: I have read fantastic reviews of this film and can’t wait to see it.
