10 New Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘The Woman King’ and More!

The Woman King

What new movies are coming out this week? Everything from a film about a warrior queen to a comedy about murder. Plus, there’s a horror film or two and a documentary.

Viola Davis is a general of an all-female army of warriors in The Woman King. Saoirse Ronan stars in See How They Run, a comedy set in the 1950s. Then, Mia Goth stars in Pearl, a prequel to the 2022 horror film X from filmmaker Ti West. And last but not least, there’s the documentary Moonage Daydream, which tells the story of David Bowe’s life.

Here is the full rundown of new movies coming out this week in theaters, as well as those releasing on the major streaming platforms.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: September 12 – September 18, 2022

The Woman King

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, September 16, 2022.

Summary: The Woman King is the story of Nanisca (Viola Davis), a general of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors trained to take on an enemy determined to steal their people and destroy their way of life.

What to Watch For: The film is inspired by true events.

Word on the Street: The film took seven years to make with Viola Davis at the forefront as a producer on the film.

My Take: Actress Maria Bello is credited with both a story by and producer credit in the film.

See How They Run

See How They Run   (2022)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, September 16, 2022.

Summary: Set in 1950’s London, See How They Run is about a Hollywood film producer who sets out to turn a popular play into a film, but one problem, members of the production are being murdered, one by one. Sent in to solve the mystery and catch the killer are the world-weary Inspector Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) and his over-enthusiastic rookie Constable Stalker (Saoirse Ronan).

What to Watch For: The play that the film revolves around is The Mousetrap, by legendary mystery writer Agatha Christie. Christie wrote it into the contract that the play could not be made into a movie until six months after the play closed on the West End of London. Incidentally, the play has never closed, except during the COVID pandemic.

Word on the Street: Harris Dickinson plays Richard ‘Dickie’ Attenborough. Attenborough was in the original West End cast and went on to win two Oscars for his film Gandhi (1982).

My Take: I think Saoirse Ronan has become one of the best young actors in film today.

Pearl

Pearl   (2022)

Release Date: In select theaters on Friday, September 16, 2022.

Summary: Trapped on her family’s isolated farm, Pearl (Mia Goth) must tend to her invalid father while being tormented by her bitter and overbearing mother. Pearl wants to lead the glamorous life she has seen in the movies. Consequently, Pearl will do anything to make that happen.

What to Watch For: The film is a prequel to the 2022 horror film X from filmmaker Ti West.

Word on the Street: The film was directed by Ti West and co-written by West and his star Mia Goth.

My Take: I liked X, so I can’t wait to see this film.

The Silent Twins

The Silent Twins   (2022)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, September 16, 2022.

Summary: The Silent Twins is about June (Letitia Wright) and Jennifer (Tamara Lawrance), twins living in Wales, part of the only Black family in a small town. The two are called “the silent twins” because they refuse to talk to anyone other than each other using their own language. Now teenagers, they have gotten into trouble and are faced with an unspeakable fate, having to live in a psychiatric hospital separately.

What to Watch For: The film is based on real-life identical twins.

Word on the Street: The movie is from Agnieszka Smoczynska, an award-winning filmmaker whose best-known film was the 2015 film The Lure.

My Take: I thought The Lure was strangely brilliant, so I won’t miss this film.

Goodnight Mommy

Goodnight Mommy   (2022)

Rating: R

Release Date: Premieres on Amazon Prime on Friday, September 16, 2022.

Summary: Goodnight Mommy takes place when twin brothers (Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti) arrive at their mother’s (Naomi Watts) country home, they discover their mother’s face is covered with bandages from recent cosmetic surgery. However, their mother is acting strangely, and the boys begin to suspect it isn’t their mother behind those bandages.

What to Watch For: This is a remake of the 2014 Austrian film of the same name.

Word on the Street: Director Matt Sobel is best known for his 2015 award-winning film Take Me to the River.

My Take: Could this be another Oscar nomination role for Naomi Watts?

Clerks III

Clerks III   (2022)

Release Date: In select theatres on Tuesday, September 13, 2022.

Summary: Clerks III takes place after Randal(Jeff Anderson) has a heart attack and decides to quit watching movies and make one; about the Quick Stop.

What to Watch For: The gang is back for this third film in the Clerks franchise, including Kevin Smith as Silent Bob, Jason Mewes as Jay, Brian O’Halloran as Dante, and with Ben Affleck, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Rosario Dawson, and Justin Long to fill out the cast.

Word on the Street: Kevin Smith is taking the film on the road for a tour in a city near you.

My Take: I loved the first Clerks film, and I hope to see Smith when he comes with the movie to Atlanta.

Moonage Daydream

Moonage Daydream  (2022)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, September 16, 2022.

Summary: Moonage Daydream is a documentary about the life and artistry of singer/actor David Bowie.

What to Watch For: The film has been sanctioned by the Bowie estate and is by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Brett Morgen (Jane (2017), Cobain: Montage of Heck (2015), and The Kid Stays in the Picture (2002)).

Word on the Street: The film was nominated for two awards at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

My Take: I can’t wait to see this film. David Bowie is one of my favorite artists, but I never got to see him in concert.

Gods Country

God’s Country  (2022)

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, September 16, 2022.

Summary: In God’s Country a college professor, Sandra (Thandiwe Newton), confronts two hunters trespassing on her property out in the wilderness. Soon Sandra is drawn into an escalating battle of wills, but these hunters have messed with the wrong woman.

What to Watch For: The film won the Founders Prize at the 2022 Traverse City Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Thandiwe Newton is best known for her Emmy-winning role as Maeve in the TV series Westworld.

My Take: I have been a fan of Thandiwe Newton since her role as Nyah Hall in Mission: Impossible II.

Do Revenge

Release Date: Premiering on the Netflix platform on Friday, September 16, 2022.

Summary: Do Revenge is about Drea (Camila Mendes) and Eleanor (Maya Hawke), who are tired of being picked on and made fun of at school. They decide to team up, take down their bullies, and get revenge on each other’s enemies.

What to Watch For: Camila Mendes is best known for playing Veronica on the TV series Riverdale, and Maya Hawke, is of course, Robin Buckley on Stranger Things.

Word on the Street: The film is directed and co-written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who also wrote the summer hit Thor: Love and Thunder.

My Take: I love the tag-line of this movie: I’ll do yours if you do mine.

Confess, Fletch

Confess, Fletch   (2022)

Rating: R

Release Date: In select theatres and On Demand on Friday, September 16, 2022.

Summary: Fletch (Jon Hamm) is in hot water as someone has committed multiple murders, and Fletch becomes the prime suspect. Consequently, Fletch must prove his innocence while simultaneously searching for his fiancé’s stolen art collection.

What to Watch For: Chevy Chase played Fletch in two highly successful films in the 80s, Fletch (1985) and Fletch Lives (1989).

Word on the Street: Since the last Fletch films, everyone from Kevin Smith to Jason Sudeikis has tried to bring a Fletch film to the theatres.

My Take: Jon Hamm seems to be the perfect successor to Chevy Chase.
