Star Wars’ Ahsoka: Details, News, and Speculation

Ahsoka Tano

It’s high time we get a female as the titular character of a Star Wars series. And who better than Ahsoka Tano to show us how it’s done?

Since her heroism in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Ahsoka has long been a favorite of Star Wars fans. But not everyone knows who she is. If you haven’t seen the animated series, the first time you met Ahsoka was in The Mandalorian. Now as she takes center stage in her own show, she’s no longer delegated to the more niche Star Wars media.

Let’s talk about what we know so far about Ahsoka.

Who Is Ahsoka Tano?

For those of you who have not seen any of The Clone Wars, you may not know who Ahsoka Tano is. If you aren’t familiar with this awesome Togruta, she’s Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan.

You heard that correctly. Before Anakin went all Vader on the Jedi, he was entrusted with training his own Padawan.

We first meet her in the 2008 The Clone Wars movie. Then she plays an instrumental role in the Clones Wars animated series. Her first live action appearance was on The Mandalorian. She then appeared in The Book of Boba Fett

Ahsoka survived Order 66, making her one of the final surviving Jedi. She now travels the galaxy doing right. “I love that she is this wanderer character who is going to just do good in the universe. The Jedi Order has disappeared in many ways, it’s so fractured, and so many people are targeted,” says Rosario Dawson, the actress portraying the character.

“Since the very beginning, the way that has been pulling her is to be vigilant, and to be brave, and to be wise, and to always have her eye set on rooting out evil…And I think that’s one of the reasons why so many love her. It’s why I love her. She represents truly the best of the Jedi, you know?” Dawson adds.

On May 9, 2022, Disney+ tweeted, “Ahsoka, an Original series, starts production today #DisneyPlus.” They shared a photo with a director’s chair with Ahsoka logo on the back.

In true Disney fashion, most of the production and cast have been kept under tight wraps. However, we know that Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau are involved as showrunners. We also know that Peter Ramsey, the co-director of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, will direct at least one episode.

Storyline & Theories

So what’s going to happen during Ahsoka? We’re going to watch as Sabine joins Ahsoka to find Ezra Bridger! During a panel for Mando+ at Star Wars Celebration, we got to see a sneak peek of the show. The teaser, which Disney does not plan on releasing to the public, showed Ahsoka entering a ship that looks like the Ghost. We see an obscured character that resembles Hera passing by her. Hera was a pilot from the Star Wars: Rebels animated series. The footage stops after we see the Rebels mural.

But what does this mean? For those of you who haven’t watched Rebels, the show ends with the Ghost crew facing off against the Empire. To save the planet and his friends, Ezra sends himself and the Grand Admiral into space. Since the show ended, fans have been desperate to see the heroic Jedi come back. It looks like Ahsoka will give us this opportunity.

Based on her appearance in The Mandalorian, we know that Ahsoka is hunting Grand Admiral Thrawn. It makes sense that she’d be searching for Ezra as well.

Director Dave Filoni told reporters, “It’s thrilling, I gotta tell you. It’s something you imagine doing for a long time. And then it’s kind of startling when you’re sitting there, and now you have to do it. I thought of this adventure for Ahsoka for a long time, and it’s interesting to see how it’s evolved…Years ago, I never would have imagined that it was sprung from a branch of a tree that had anything to do with a guy [like] Din Djarin, or a child that looks like Yoda.”

“It’s a great lesson for me on how, when you have other creatives like Jon Favreau, they can help lend such dimension and depth to what you’re doing.” Filoni adds.

Ahsoka Cast Members

So who is set to appear in the live action Ahsoka show?

We of course have Rosario Dawson continuing her work with the character from The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. We’ll get even more Hayden Christensen playing Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader. Fans loved seeing Christensen getting to explore the character of Vader for the first time, and now they’ll get to enjoy it even more.

Natasha Liu Bordizzo will play Sabine Wren. Ray Stevenson will play an Imperial Admiral. We don’t yet know the character’s name, but we know it isn’t Thrawn. At least, we don’t think it is. It seems they’re saving the secret of who will portray Thrawn until an opportune marketing moment.

In undisclosed roles, we have Ivanna Sakhno and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. As Ewan McGregor’s real-life wife, Winstead is now getting the opportunity to join in on the Star Wars universe

Ahsoka Release Date Speculation

When will we get to see this female-driven series premiere on Disney+?

Unfortunately, we don’t yet have an official release date. However, we’re going to assume that Star Wars: Ahsoka will air after the third season of The Mandalorian. Ahsoka will undoubtedly tie into the Disney series, so we’ll need the context from the show to start Ahsoka. With The Mandalorian Season 3 set to premiere in February 2023, we can only hope that Ahsoka will premiere soon after.
