Damon Lindelof Is Working on a New ‘Star Wars’ Movie
Good news for Star Wars fans! A new movie is officially in development with Lost‘s Damon Lindelof writing the script. It’s also confirmed that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, best known for her directing work on Ms. Marvel, will direct the flick.
It’s yet to be confirmed yet who Lindelof’s writing partner is on the project. However, inside sources suggest that the movie is no where filming, as the script is still actively being worked on.
News of the project broke on Deadline, stating that both Lindelof and Lucasfilm were keen to bring the Ms. Marvel director on board so the filmmaker’s vision can be included in the screenplay. So it’s possible that Obaid-Chinoy will be helping to pen the script as well.
This new Star Wars project is one of the most closely-guarded secrets in Hollywood at the moment. But insiders suggest that it has the most momentum of all the Star Wars films that are currently planned, including those from directors Patty Jenkins and Taika Waititi.
2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was the last movie in the franchise. Grossing over $1 billion worldwide against a budget of $275 million, the last film in the Skywalker saga was a massive success. And since the film’s release, Lucasfilm has shifted more of their focus to TV projects, with series like The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and, most recently, Andor.
The studio says they have a number of projects in development. And they don’t want to rush the next set of movies until they have the right story to tell.
So What’s the Status of the Other Star Wars Movies?
Patty Jenkins had been set to direct Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. However, it has now been delayed due to the director’s other work commitments, which include Wonder Woman 3 and Cleopatra, both of which will star Gal Gadot.
Jenkins and writer Matthew Robinson have been developing Star Wars: Rogue Squadron with Lucasfilm for more than a year. And it was initially set to go into preproduction by the end of 2022.
However, insiders say that the producers and filmmaking team realized that Jenkins’ schedule and other commitments wouldn’t allow for the time needed to make the movie next year.
Rogue Squadron has now been taken off the production schedule, although the release date of December 2023 currently remains in place for the time being.
Hard pass on anything related to EPs 7 through 9.
