8 New Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘Causeway,’ ‘Enola Holmes 2,’ and More!

Wondering what new movies coming out this week are? There are eight great options for movie fans, including a Jennifer Lawrence drama, the return of Millie Bobby Brown as Sherlock Holmes’s younger sister, and a couple of documentaries that could be Oscar contenders.

Causeway stars Jennifer Lawrence and Brian Tyree Henry, Enola Holmes 2 has Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavil, and Armageddon Time brings us Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong, and the always magnificent Anthony Hopkins. That should be enough star power to get you to a theater!

New Movies Coming Out This Week: October 31, 2022 – November 6, 2022

Causeway

Causeway  (2022)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, November 4, 2022.

Summary: In Causeway, Lynsey (Jennifer Lawrence) has done something she said she would never do: return to her hometown of New Orleans. After being injured while fighting in Afghanistan, Lynsey has moved back home to rehabilitate a traumatic brain injury, living with her mother, Gloria (Linda Emond), and finding a job as a pool cleaner. With the help of a new friend in James (Brian Tyree Henry), Lynsey is determined to get back into the Army and heck out of New Orleans.

What to Watch For: Jennifer Lawrence wanted to take a break from making films, but she then read the script for Causeway and decided it was too good to pass up.

Word on the Street: Brian Tyree Henry has been nominated for two Emmy Awards (Atlanta, This is Us) and is up for an Outstanding Supporting Performance award at the 2022 Gotham Independent Film Awards for his role as James in the film.

My Take: Hey, I’ll admit that I will see any film in which Jennifer Lawrence is starring. I mean, she has won an Oscar and was nominated for a few more.

Enola Holmes 2

Enola Holmes 2  (2022)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, November 4, 2022.

Summary: Enola Holmes 2 takes place soon after solving her first case. Enola (Millie Bobby Brown) has now decided to be like her famous brother, Sherlock (Henry Cavill), and become a detective-for-hire. After no work, Enola chooses to take a case of a poor match-girl and find the match-girls sister. Little did Enola know that the mystery would involve a deadly conspiracy, and Enola may need the help from her brother to get her out of what could be a deadly jam.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the Enola Holmes Mysteries book series by Nancy Springer.

Word on the Street: The film is directed by Harry Bradbeer, who also directed the first Enola Holmes film.

My Take: I can’t wait to see this film as I am a huge Sherlock Holmes fan.

Armageddon Time

Armageddon Time  (2022)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, November 4, 2022.

Summary: Armageddon Time takes place in 1980, and Paul (Banks Repeta) is starting sixth grade at a public school. Paul’s best friend is Johnny (Jaylin Webb), a Black student who always gets into more trouble, even when the two are caught doing the same thing. When the two get into trouble again, Paul’s parents (Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong) decide to send Paul to a private school, and Paul must choose whether or not to disobey his parents and stay friends with Johnny.

What to Watch For: The film received a 7-minute standing ovation. Additionally, it was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The movie is from award-winning filmmaker James Grey, known for his films Two Lovers (2008), The Lost City of Z (2016), and Ad Astra (2019).

My Take: Just the cast alone is reason to see this, with Anthony Hopkins as Paul’s grandfather and Jessica Chastain as a substantial donor to the private school Paul attends.

Good Night Oppy

Good Night Oppy  (2022)

Rating: PG

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, November 4, 2022. and on Amazon Prime on Wednesday, November 23, 2022.

Summary: Good Night Oppy is a documentary about Opportunity, the Mars Exploration Rover, known as Oppy by the scientists at NASA. Oppy was supposed to explore Mars for only 90 days but lasted almost 15 years. Is it too weird for a group of scientists to fall in love with a little robot in outer space?

What to Watch For: The film is considered one of the front runners to make the nomination list for Best Documentary at the 2023 Oscars.

Word on the Street: The movie is up for seven awards at the 2022 Critics Choice Documentary Awards.

My Take: I am a fan of the film’s director, Ryan White. I saw his excellent Beatles documentary Good Ol’ Freda about ten years ago at the Atlanta Film Festival.

Im Totally Fine

I’m Totally Fine  (2022)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: In select theaters and On Demand on Friday, November 4, 2022.

Summary: In I’m Totally Fine, Vanessa (Jillian Bell) is devastated when her best friend and business partner, Jennifer (Natalie Morales), unexpectedly dies. Vanessa decides to go on a trip that the two had planned. And after a night of drinking, Vanessa wakes up to Jennifer making breakfast. However, it’s not Jennifer, but an alien sent to study Vanessa for the next 48 hours. Is it real, or just a bizarre dream?

What to Watch For: Director Brandon Dermer has directed music videos from Panic! at the Disco, the Jonas Brothers, Major Lazer, and Jon Lajoie.

Word on the Street: Jillian Bell is an Emmy-nominated Saturday Night Live writer who has starred in films. One of her best-known roles was as Mercedes in 22 Jump Street (2014).

My Take: I am a huge fan of Natalie Morales, who has starred in The Middleman, Parks and Recreation, and Santa Clarita Diet.

The Return of Tanya Tucker

The Return of Tanya Tucker: Featuring Brandi Carlile  (2022)

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, November 4, 2022.

Summary: The Return of Tanya Tucker is a documentary that takes place decades after Tanya Tucker seemed to disappear from the spotlight. Singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile decides to write an entire album with her hero based on Tanya’s extraordinary and sometimes controversial life. Could this be the most incredible comeback in country music history?

What to Watch For: The film won the Audience Award at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Director Kathlyn Horan, in the past, has worked on music videos and documentary shorts with not only Brandi Carlile but also The Indigo Girls.

My Take: I am a huge fan of Carlile. And I know that the film is over 90% currently on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Estate  (2022)

Summary: The Estate is about two sisters (Toni Collette and Anna Faris), desperate for money, who decide to go visit their terminally ill relative, Aunt Hilda (Kathleen Turner). They hope to become beneficiaries of her wealthy estate and solve all their money woes. The only problem is other family members have decided the same thing.

What to Watch For: The cast includes Rosemarie DeWitt, David Duchovny, Ron Livingston, Billy Slaughter, and Patricia French.

Word on the Street: This is the first feature film role Anna Faris has done since she left her long-running TV series Mom.

My Take: I have been a fan of Toni Collette since she burst upon the scene in the smash 1994 hit Muriel’s Wedding.

Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me

Release Date: Premieres on Apple TV+ on Friday, November 4, 2022.

Summary: Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me is a documentary about Selena Gomez, who wanted to be a star from age four. Just when she reached unimaginable stardom, Selena was sent down a dark journey that took her nearly six years to come back from. However, back she is, and she is here to stay.

What to Watch For: The film is from Alek Keshishian, who brought us Madonna: Truth or Dare (1991) and countless music videos.

Word on the Street: Not only a music star but Selena Gomez is also known for her TV and film roles, including Wizards of Waverley Place, The Fundamentals of Caring, A Rainy Day in New York, and the award-winning Only Murders in the Building.

My Take: I still remember her appearance as herself in the 2011 hit The Muppets.
