4 New Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘M3GAN’ and More!

It’s a brand new year and with it comes this year’s first movie releases! Curious what new movies are coming out this week? We’ve got you covered!

This week we have a horror film about a creepy robot. Then there’s Tom Hanks as a cranky old man who just wants to be left alone. Next, we have a mystery starring Christian Bale solving a case in 1830 with the help of a future writer named Poe. And lastly, there’s a western starring Nicolas Cage.

Here is the full rundown of new movies coming out this week in theatres, as well as those releasing on the major streaming platforms.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: January 2, 2023 – January 8, 2023

M3GAN  (2023)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, January 6, 2023.

Summary: In M3GAN, Gemma (Allison Williams), a robotics engineer, suddenly becomes a caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady (Violet McGraw). Gemma realizes she is unprepared to be a parent and decides to pair her robotic companion prototype M3GAN with Cady. It’s a pairing that will become deadly.

What to Watch For: M3GAN is played by Amie Donald, who played four different hybrid characters, including Maya the Monkey in the TV series Sweet Tooth.

Word on the Street: The film was developed from a story idea from legendary horror film director James Wan (Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring).

My Take: I love the tagline for the film: ‘Friendship has evolved.’

A Man Called Otto

A Man Called Otto   (2022)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In select theatres now and nationwide on Friday, January 13, 2023.

Summary: A Man Called Otto is about Otto (Tom Hanks), a grumpy old man who just wants to be by himself after the loss of his wife. Otto’s world will be turned upside down by a new family next door and a cat that won’t leave him alone.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the novel by Fredrik Backman, A Man Called Ove, which in 2015 was made into the Swedish film of the same name. That film was Sweden’s official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film for the 89th Academy Awards.

Word on the Street: The movie is directed by Marc Forster, who is best known for his films Monster’s Ball (2001), Quantum of Solace (2008), and Christopher Robin (2018).

My Take: I loved the Swedish film, so I look forward to seeing this version.

The Pale Blue Eye

The Pale Blue Eye  (2022)

Rating: R

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, January 6, 2013.

Summary: The Pale Blue Eye takes place in 1830,  where a former West Point cadet and now detective, Augustus Landor (Christian Bale), is hired to investigate the suicide of a West Point cadet. Augustus discovers this isn’t an ordinary case of suicide and insists on another cadet to help him solve the possible crime. That young cadet’s name is Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling).

What to Watch For: This is the third film that Christian Bale and director Scott Cooper have worked together on. The first two were Out of the Furnace (2013) and Hostiles (2017).

Word on the Street: The film is based on the book of the same name by Louis Bayard.

My Take: I love mysteries, and adding Poe as a main character has me intrigued.

The Old Way

The Old Way  (2023)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, January 6, 2023, and On Demand Friday, January 13, 2023.

Summary: The Old Way is about Colton Briggs (Nicolas Cage), one of the most feared gunfighters in the west before he decided to hang up his guns and get married. Colton’s past comes back to haunt him when the son of a man Colton killed returns to exact revenge, resulting in the death of Colton’s wife. Accompanied by his daughter, Brooke (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), Colton is on a mission to find his wife’s killer and avenge her.

What to Watch For: This is the first western that Nicolas Cage has starred in.

Word on the Street: The film was shot in Montana.

My Take: Hey, Nicolas Cage in a western? That’s a film right in my wheelhouse!
