New Movies Coming Out This Week: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

The new movies coming out this week, include one highly anticipated Marvel film! Curious about what’s releasing in theaters and on streaming in the next few days? We’ve got you covered!

This week we have a group of rag-tag superheroes returning for their next adventure. The whole crew is back, including our favorite talking raccoon, a certain tree-like creature, and a guy who loves to listen to music on cassette tape.

We also have a couple of rom-coms, including one starring Outlander star Sam Heughan and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. A little-known singer named Céline Dion also stars.

All that and a Texas Ranger hunting down a fugitive in London, plus a murder mystery where two women who loved the same man track down his killer.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: May 1, 2023 – May 7, 2023

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3  (2023)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, May 5, 2023.

Summary: In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Peter/Star-lord (Chris Pratt) is still hurting from the loss of Camora. He and his team are adjusting to life on Knowhere when parts of Rocket’s past resurface. To protect him, the Guardians must go on a dangerous mission that could lead to the team disbanding forever.

What to Watch For: This is the 32nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And it is releasing on the sixth anniversary of the 2nd film in the series, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Word on the Street: As with the other two Guardian films in the series, James Gunn also returns to direct this flick.

My Take: It’s said that this will be the last Guardians of the Galaxy film. I will miss this series that gave us great characters such as Groot, Rocket, Drax, and Nebula.

Love Again

Love Again  (2023)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, May 5, 2023.

Summary: Love Again is about a young woman (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) who tries to ease the pain of her fiancé’s death by sending texts to his old phone number. Unknown to her, the number has been reassigned to a stranger (Sam Heughan). And that stranger finds himself intrigued by the texts and decides he must meet the woman who has written them.

What to Watch for: There are a couple of cameos in the film: Céline Dion plays herself, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas’s husband, Nick Jonas, plays a blind date.

Word on the Street: This is the first film that Céline Dion has appeared in. She wrote new songs for the film.

My Take: The film is from filmmaker Jim Strouse, who gave us People Places Things (2015) and Grace is Gone (2007).

Chile ’76  (2022)

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, May 5, 2023.

Summary: Chile ’76 takes place during great political unrest in Chile, when Carmen (Aline Küppenheim) heads to her beach house for some getaway time. When the family priest asks her to help hide an injured man he is sheltering in secret, Carmen steps onto unexplored territories, one from the safe, peaceful life she is used to.

What to Watch For: The film has been a big hit on the film festival circuit, winning the First Feature Competition at the 2022 London Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Aline Küppenheim is best known for her role as Ximena Carbonell in the HBO Latin America TV series Fugitives and as Sonia in the Oscar-winning 2017 film A Fantastic Woman.

My Take: The film is currently at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with over 20 film critic reviews.

Whats Love Got to Do With it

What’s Love Got to Do With It?  (2022)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, May 5, 2023.

Summary: What’s Love Got to Do With It? is about Zoe (Lily James), an award-winning filmmaker whose next project is documenting her best friend’s (Shazad Latif) journey into an assisted marriage in accordance with his family’s Pakistani heritage. While filming his hopeful quest to marry a stranger, Zoe challenges her attitude towards love and relationships.

What to Watch For: The part of Zoe’s mother was written by Jemima Khan, specifically for Emma Thompson.

Word on the Street: Director Shekhar Kapur is best known for his Oscar-winning film Elizabeth (1998).

My Take: I love that the two leads, Lily James and Shazad Latif, who play best friends in the film, are long-time friends in real life.

One Ranger

One Ranger  (2023)

Summary: One Ranger is about a Texas Ranger (Thomas Jane) who is asked by British Intelligence to track down a fugitive who has murdered fellow Rangers and is planning a terrorist attack in London.

What to Watch For: The cast includes Dominique Tipper, Patrick Bergin, Dean Jagger, Nick Moran, James Oliver Wheatley, and John Malkovich.

Word on the Street: Dominique Tipper and Thomas Jane were in the TV series The Expanse together.

My Take: This reminds me of both the 1975 John Wayne film Brannigan and the old long-running TV series McCloud starring Dennis Weaver.

Double Life

Double Life  (2023)

Summary: In Double Life, after a husband is mysteriously killed in an accident, his wife (Pascale Hutton) discovers he had a mistress (Javicia Leslie) who didn’t know he was married. The two women team up to find out the truth on why the man that they both loved died.

What to Watch For: Javicia Leslie portrayed Batwoman/Ryan Wilder in the CW series, replacing Ruby Rose after the first season.

Word on the Street: Pascale Hutton plays Rosemary Coulter in the long-running TV series When Calls the Heart.

My Take: I am a fan of Pascale Hutton from her Hallmark Channel movies.
