Tom Cruise is back, and he’s about to embark on a mission that’s bound to blow your mind. Brace yourself for awe-inspiring stunts that will leave you breathless! And while we get to see Mr. Cruise do a jaw-dropping stunt or two, we also get a movie about theater camp, a trip to Lourdes with Maggie Smith and Kathy Bates, and a documentary about the Negro Baseball League.

And if that isn’t enough, how about a trip to Greece with two old friends, a film about a lonely rich girl who needs a friend, and a comedy about making a zombie film when real zombies show up!

Summary: In Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team must track down a dangerous weapon before it ends in the wrong hands. Just how far will Ethan have to go to save the world again?

What to Watch For: Tom Cruise trained for over three years to do one of the stunts in the film.

Word on the Street: Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter in the Marvel Universe films) has joined the cast as a thief who crosses paths with Ethan Hunt.

My Take: We all know now that the real reason to see the Mission Impossible film is to see what crazy stunt Tom Cruise has decided to do himself.

The Miracle Club

Summary: The Miracle Club takes place in 1967, and Chrissie (Laura Linney) has returned to Ireland from America after being banished by her family. She has returned after the death of her mother. Chrissie decides (uninvited) to go with her grandmother, Lily (Maggie Smith), who is going on a pilgrimage to the sacred French town of Lourdes with two of her friends (Agnes O’Casey, Kathy Bates). The women hope they will find the miracles they need, but they might find something more.

What to Watch For: The film has been in the planning stages for seventeen years, with both Maggie Smith and Kathy Bates attached to the movie for all these years.

Word on the Street: The film is directed by Irish-born Thaddeus O’Sullivan, known for his movies Nothing Personal (1996) and Stella Days (2012).

My Take: How can you pass up a film with Maggie Smith, Kathy Bates, and Laura Linney?

Theater Camp  (2023)

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, July 14, 2023.

Summary: Theater Camp is about Troy (Jimmy Tatro), who is forced to run his mother’s three-week theater camp after his mother has a seizure during a performance of Bye Bye Birdie and slips into a coma. Troy must rely on staff because Troy has no talent and no idea how to run a camp. But the kids have a ‘can do’ attitude and a song in their hearts, so what could go wrong?

What to Watch For: The cast includes Ben Platt, Molly Gordon, Patti Harrison, Nathan Lee Graham, Amy Sedaris, and Ayo Edebiri.

Word on the Street: The film was a big hit at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival and the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award.

My Take: Having spent my childhood performing in theatre productions, I can’t wait to see this film. I hear much of the dialogue was improvised and shot at an actual camp location.

Summary: Two Tickets to Greece follows the journey of Magalie (Laure Calamy) and Blandine (Olivia Cote), who shared an unbreakable bond as best friends during their teenage years. They would often dream and discuss their long-awaited adventure to the picturesque Greek Island of Amorgos. However, as time passed, their paths diverged, and their friendship faded away.

After a tumultuous breakup, Blandine realizes the significance of reconnecting with Magalie. And together, the two come decide to finally go on their long-lost trip. Be careful what you wish for because you’re not teenagers anymore.

What to Watch For: The film played at the Palm Beach Film Festival, where it was the opening-night film.

Word on the Street: The film is from award-winning filmmaker Marc Fitoussi (Paris Follies (2014), Selfie (2020)).

My Take: Since the movie was shot on-location, this is a must-see for anyone who wants to visit Greece.

The League

Summary: The League is a documentary about a league that changed baseball forever, the Negro Baseball League.

What to Watch For: The film uses animation and historical film footage to tell the story of the creation of the Negro Baseball League.

What to Watch For: Filmmaker Sam Pollard’s 1998 documentary 4 Little Girls was nominated for an Oscar.

My Take: I won’t miss this film. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, MO, is on my bucket list of places to visit.

Amanda

Amanda  (2022)

Release Date: In select theaters on Friday, July 14, 2023.

Summary: Amanda revolves around the story of Amanda (Benedetta Porcaroli), a 24-year-old born into an upper-class family. Unfortunately, Amanda has been devoid of a true friend since her childhood days. Now she is being forced to join the real world and must find someone, anyone she could call a friend.

Enter Viola, portrayed by Giovanna Mezzogiorno, who happened to be Amanda’s childhood companion. However, there’s a catch: Viola prefers to confine herself within the confines of her room, reluctant to venture outside. Amanda recognizes this as an opportunity to rekindle their friendship and believes that if she can convince Viola to be her friend once again, everything will fall perfectly into place in her life.

Or so she thinks.

What to Watch For: The film was a big hit on the European film festival circuit. It originally premiered at the 79th Venice Film Festival.

Word on the Street: This is the debut feature film of filmmaker Carolina Cavalli. Cavalli co-wrote the award-winning 2023 film Fremont with Babak Jalali.

My Take: Fellow critics have praised the performance of Benedetta Porcaroli as Amanda.

Lakota Nations vs United States

Lakota Nation vs United States   (2022)

Summary: Lakota Nation vs United States is a documentary exploring Indigenous peoples’ fight to get back the Black Hills from the U. S. government. The Black Hills, a sacred ground for the Lakota Nation, was originally to be a part of their reservation until gold was discovered, and the government took it.

What to Watch For: The film uses archival material combined with current ‘on the ground’ footage, with interviews with activists and leaders of the movement to reclaim the Black Hills in South Dakota.

Word on the Street: The film is directed by Jesse Short Bull and Laura Tomaselli and produced by Sarah Eagle Heart, Mark Ruffalo, and Marisa Tomei.

My Take: Co-director Jesse Short Bull, a member of the Oglala Lakota Tribe, is descended from someone who lived through the original disputes over their land.

Final Cut  (2022)

Summary: In Final Cut, a small film crew is shooting a low-budget zombie film and trying to do it in one take. There is one problem that could ruin the shoot; they are attacked by real zombies.

What to Watch For: The film is from Michel Hazanavicius, who won the 2012 Oscar for his direction of The Artist.

Word on the Street: The film was nominated for two César Awards, the French version of the Academy Awards.

My Take: I love zombie movies, and Michel Hazanavicius is a great comedy director. So I have high hopes for this film.
