New Movies Coming Out This Week: Barbie

The biggest week of the summer has finally arrived, and with it comes this summer’s two most talked about films, Barbie and Oppenheimer! Curious about the other new movies coming out this week as well? We’ve got you covered!

Aside from the two largest blockbusters of the week, one with our favorite plastic doll that lives in a pink house and drives around town with Ken in a pink convertible – and the other that tells the story about the man who developed the atomic bomb to end WWII (but created an even greater evil), we also have five additional films releasing.

There’s a comedy about the story of those little furry toys that became a craze in the 1990s. Then there’s also a documentary on one of the all-time great basketball players. Plus, a sci-fi film about three unlikely heroes uncovering a plot to clone people. And a horror film about a little boy who hears things in the walls of his family home.

Here’s the full breakdown of the new movies coming out this week in theaters and on streaming.

Barbie   (2023)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, July 21, 2023.

Summary: Barbie is about living in Barbie Land, which is the perfect place for a perfect person (Barbie (played by Margot Robbie). Or, it’s perfect until you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken (Ryan Gosling).

What to Watch For: The film is directed by Greta Gerwig and written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, the same team that gave us Greenburg (2010), Frances Ha (2012), and Mistress America (2015).

Word on the Street: The movie has been in development since 2009. Over the years Diablo Cody, Amy Schumer, Anne Hathaway, and Lady Gaga have all been attached at various points.

My Take: I love that the font used in the film’s title is the same font used for all Barbie products from 1975 to 1991.

Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer   (2023)

Rating: R

Word on the Street: The film is from Christopher Nolan (The Dark Night series, Interstellar (2014), Dunkirk (2017)). It also boasts a stellar cast that includes Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Gary Oldman, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, and Olivia Thirlby.

Luck, hard work, and talent made him the player he is today.

What to Watch For: The film debuted at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The movie was nominated for the Best Documentary award at the 2023 Miami Film Festival.

The Beanie Bubble   (2023)

Rating: R

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, July 21, 2023, and on Apple TV+ on Friday, July 28, 2023.

Summary: The Beanie Bubble follows the story of Ty Warner (Zach Galifianakis). Ty was a frustrated toy salesman until his collaboration with three women (Elizabeth Banks, Sarah Snook, and Geraldine Viswanathan). The four of them grew their idea into one of the biggest toy crazes in history. It’s a story of fame, fortune, greed, betrayal, and Beanie Babies.

What to Watch For: Co-writer/director Kristin Gore is best known as a writer on the staff of the Futurama TV series.

Word on the Street: Geraldine Viswanathan has been busy lately, starring in the Miracle Workers TV series and as Lucy Gulliver in the film The Broken Hearts Gallery (2020).

My Take: I did not recognize Zach Galifianakis portraying Ty Warner in the trailer because of an outstanding makeup job.

The Deepest Breath  (2023)

Rating: PG

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Wednesday, July 19, 2023.

Summary: The Deepest Breath is a documentary about the sport of free-diving. It focuses on champion free-diver Alessia Zecchini and diving trainer/safety diver Stephen Keenan. The two are a couple. And the film tells the story of their relationship and how such a dangerous sport affects their friends and family.

What to Watch For: The film features never before seen underwater dive footage and extensive interviews with Zecchini, Keenan, and some of the most famous free-divers in the world.

Word on the Street: This is the 2nd feature film for director Laura McGann. Her first feature was the 2016 documentary Revolutions about the women of Ireland’s burgeoning Roller Derby scene.

My Take: For someone like me who has asthma, watching a sport that requires you to hold your breath underwater for long periods can be a little triggering.

Word on the Street: The film is directed by Samuel Bodin, who is making his feature film debut. The movie stars Lizzy Caplan and Antony Starr as Peter’s parents and Cleopatra Coleman as Woody’s teacher.
