New Movies Coming Out: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

It’s an eclectic mix of genres, ensuring there’s something for everyone with the new movies coming out this week!

First up, we embark on an animated adventure with the pizza-loving, sewer-dwelling turtles in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Then Jason Statham returns to face off against colossal sharks, armed with cutting-edge gear and a thrilling wave-runner in Meg 2: The Trench.

Not stopping there, we have a hilarious comedy by Randall Park and a captivating true story of a resurgent singing duo three decades after their album release. And there’s also an action-packed film that redefines the term ‘Bridezilla.’

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem  (2023)

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Wednesday, August 2, 2023.

Summary: In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, the Turtles wish they had ordinary lives, but that will never happen. With the help of Master Splinter (voiced by Jackie Chan) and April O’Neil (voiced by Ayo Edebiri), the guys are ready to take on their next foe. Unfortunately, it’s not just one bad guy, but a gang of mutants, led by a ‘Super Fly’ (voiced by Ice Cube), that want to destroy humans at all costs. The Turtles will need all their skills to defeat these bad guys.

What to Watch For: The voice cast includes Natasia Demetriou as Wingnut, Seth Rogen as Bebop, Paul Rudd as Mondo Gecko, Maya Rudolph as Cynthia Utrom, Rose Byrne as Leatherhead, John Cena as Rocksteady, Post Malone as Ray Fillet, and Hannibal Buress as Genghis Frog.

Word on the Street: The four turtles’ voices were performed by teenagers (Nicolas Cantu, Brady Noon, Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr.), a first for the franchise.

My Take: I love that Seth Rogen, a huge TMNT fan, not only is a producer of the film but also co-wrote the script.

Meg 2: The Trench

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, August 4, 2023.

Summary: Meg 2: The Trench is about Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham), who, after his experience with Megalodon, is back and leading a daring research team on an exploratory dive into the ocean’s depths. Little does the team know that an illegal mining operation is about to unleash something worse than last time: there is more than one ancient creature hiding in the depths.

What to Watch For: The film takes place four years after The Meg (2018).

Word on the Street: Added to the cast is Wu Jing, one of the most popular actors in China, known for his martial arts skill in such films as Tai Chi Boxer (1996), the Sha Po Lang series, and the Wolf Warrior films.

My Take: I loved the trailer for this film, with Jason Statham riding a Wave-runner brandishing a weapon like a samurai warrior on water.

Shortcomings

Shortcomings  (2023)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, August 4, 2023.

Summary: Shortcomings is about Ben (Justin H. Min), who friends will tell you is a condescending jerk. His best friend, Alice (Sherry Cola), is hiding the fact that she is gay from her parents. They spend a lot of their time in San Francisco complaining about everything. When Ben’s girlfriend, Miko (Ally Maki), takes an internship in New York, Ben and Alice decide to go on a road trip to the ‘Big Apple’ to surprise Miko. Ben is about to get a taste of his own medicine.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the graphic novel by Adrian Tomine, who also wrote the screenplay.

Word on the Street: Sony Pictures Classics acquired the distribution rights for the film after it premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

My Take: The film is actor Randall Park’s (Fresh off the Boat, WandaVision) directorial debut.

Dreamin Wild

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, August 4, 2023.

Summary: Dreamin’ Wild is the story of Donnie (Casey Affleck) and Joe (Walton Goggins), who, in the 1970s, made a record named Dreamin’ Wild. The record flopped and cost their father (Beau Bridges) his life savings. Now, over 30 years later, a record producer has discovered the album, and the duo has another shot at the big time and redemption.

What to Watch For: The film played at the Venice Film Festival and was a nominee for the Graffetta d’Oro Award for Best Film.

Word on the Street: The film is based on a true story.

My Take: The cast includes Chris Messina, Noah Jupe, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Zooey Deschanel.

Til Death Do Us Part

Summary: In Til Death Do Us Part, you are about to be a bride (Natalie Burn) and walk down the aisle. Something is keeping you from making that walk, and it’s your soon-to-be husband’s sketchy past. So you decide to bail and think it will all blow over. However, your husband-to-be has discovered your escape plans and sent his seven groomsmen after you. They don’t know who they are dealing with, but are about to find out.

What to Watch For: Natalie Burn is best known for her role as Shelby Brock in the TV series Studio City and as Sandra in the Bruce Willis films Fortress (2021) and Fortress: Sniper’s Eye (2022).

Word on the Street: The part of the Bride was initially developed for Gina Carano.

My Take: The film is getting great word of mouth and an outstanding score on Rotten Tomatoes.

What Comes Around

Summary: What Comes Around is about Anna (Grace Van Dien), a seventeen-year-old who has started an online relationship with a guy named Eric. When Eric (Kyle Gallner) shows up at Anna’s home, she discovers he is 28. Anna’s mom (Summer Phoenix) puts the brakes on the relationship, but Eric isn’t about to give up. And now it’s a game of cat and mouse where nothing and no one is as they seem.

What to Watch For: Amy Redford, the daughter of Robert Redford, directed the film. Amy Redford is known for her award-winning film The Guitar (2008) and her work on music videos for Jeff Buckley and Pink Ape.

Word on the Street: The film played at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival and was a nominee for Best Film at the Sao Paulo International Film Festival.

My Take: Grace Van Dien played Chrissy Cunningham in the Stranger Things TV series.

A Compassionate Spy

Summary: A Compassionate Spy is a documentary about Ted Hall, who, at the age of 18, was recruited to join Robert Oppenheimer and his team to create the atomic bomb that ended WWII. Concerned that the U.S. would have a monopoly on the most powerful weapon ever created, Hall passed on crucial information about the bomb to the Soviets. Now, through the help of his wife of over 50 years, Joan, his story can finally be told.

What to Watch For: The film is from two-time Academy Award nominee filmmaker Steve James. James is known for his movies Hoop Dreams (1994) and Life Itself (2014)

Word on the Street: The film was a hit on the film festival circuit, nominated for awards at the 2023 Sofia International Film Festival and the It’s All True International Documentary Film Festival.

My Take: Everyone will want to see this documentary after seeing Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

Klondike

Summary: Klondike is about a Ukrainian family living on the disputed border with Russia. They try to leave before armed forces capture the area but are thwarted when an international air crash catastrophe happens right outside their door.

What to Watch For: The film won over 40 awards, including the Directing Award at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival for Maryna Er Gorbach.

Word on the Street: The film was the Official submission of Ukraine for the Best International Feature Film for the 95th Academy Awards.

My Take: I can’t wait to see this movie that film critics are raving about.
