9 New Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘Red, White & Royal Blue,’ ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter,’ and More!
The summer of fun continues with a diverse lineup of new movies coming out this week!
First up, we have a rom-com, Red, White, & Royal Blue, which is inspired by a best-selling book. It follows the son of an American President and a Prince who go from foes to kindling an enchanting spark. Next, we have a chilling horror film centered around a vampire’s harrowing journey at sea in The Last Voyage of the Demeter.
We also have an action film about a super spy who has to stop a hacker from unleashing a powerful weapon. And a documentary about all the films that have been based on the master of horror, Stephen King.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: August 7, 2023 – August 13, 2023
Red, White & Royal Blue (2023)
Rating: R
Release Date: Premiers on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, August 11, 2023.
Summary: In Red, White & Royal Blue, Alex (Taylor Zakhar Perez) is the son of a current President (Uma Thurman), the first woman in the job and seeking re-election. Alex has a rivalry with the young Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine), which has gotten heated after an incident at the older Prince’s brother’s wedding. To avoid a scandal, the two must act like friends on a goodwill visit to the UK. Their rivalry will soon turn to friendship, and maybe even more.
Word on the Street: The film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Casey McQuiston.
Word on the Street: This is the directorial film debut of Matthew Lopez. Lopez is best known for his award-winning plays The Whipping Man and The Inheritance.
My Take: Nicholas Galitzine has had practice playing a prince; he played Prince Robert in the 2021 film Cinderella.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
Rating: R
Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, August 11, 2023.
Summary: Based on a single chapter from Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, The Last Voyage of the Demeter is the story of the Russian schooner Demeter, which is chartered to carry a private cargo from Carpathia to London. On board are twenty-four unmarked wooden crates. There is something or someone in one of those crates that means that no one will survive this voyage.
What to Watch For: The film has been in development for over two decades with filmmakers like David Slade, Neil Marshall, Stefan Ruzowitzky, Marcus Nispel, and Robert Schwentke attached to the movie.
Word on the Street: Back in 1992, the first script for the film was written by Bragi Schut, Jr. after seeing a miniature of the Demeter that was used for the film Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
My Take: The director, André Øvredal, who directed the fabulous Troll Hunter (2010), has described the film as ‘Alien on a ship.’
Heart of Stone (2023)
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: Premieres on Netflix on Friday, August 11, 2023.
Summary: Heart of Stone is about Rachel Stone (Gal Gadot), who the world knows as an inexperienced tech working for an MI6 team headed by agent Parker (Jamie Dornan). What MI6 doesn’t know is that Stone actually works for the Carter, an elite covert peacekeeping organization that uses cutting-edge technology to neutralize global threats. When a routine mission is derailed by a mysterious hacker (Alia Bhatt), Rachel must use all her skills to stop the hacker from stealing a weapon that could change the balance of power.
What to Watch For: Netflix hopes the film will become a franchise series like the Mission Impossible films.
Word on the Street: The film is directed by Tom Harper, known for his movies War Book (2014), Wild Rose (2018), and The Aeronauts (2019).
My Take: This should be fun because we all know that Gal Gadot can do action films (Wonder Woman, Justice League).
Jules (2023)
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: In theatres on Friday, August 11, 2023.
Summary: Jules is about Milton (Ben Kingsley), who lives a quiet life in a small Pennsylvania town until his life is upended when a UFO and its extra-terrestrial passenger crash land in his backyard. He names his new friend Jules. Things start to get complicated when Milton’s two neighbors (Jane Curtin, Harriet Sansom Harris) find out about Jules. And then Milton’s daughter (Zoe Winters) gets suspicious, and the government starts sniffing around. Can’t a guy just be let alone to live with an alien from another planet?
What to Watch For: The movie was the opening night film at the 2023 Sonoma International Film Festival.
Word on the Street: The film is directed by Marc Turtletaub, the producer of Little Miss Sunshine (2006) and The Farewell (2019).
My Take: Zoe Winters is hot off her role as Kerry in the TV series Succession.
Medusa Deluxe (2022)
Rating: R
Release Date: In theatres on Friday, August 11, 2023.
Summary: Medusa Deluxe is set in the throes of a competitive hairdressing contest, one of the contestants has been murdered. Waiting for the police to interview them, what’s a group of hairdressers going to do but gossip?
What to Watch For: The film was a hit on the film festival circuit, playing to packed houses at the Atlanta Film Festival and winning the Jury Award at the 2023 Guadalajara International Film Festival.
Word on the Street: This is the feature film debut of writer/director Thomas Hardiman.
My Take: Clare Perkins, who plays one of the hairdressers, Cleve, in the film, is best known for her role as Ava Hartman on the TV series EastEnders.
Aporia (2023)
Rating: R
Release Date: In theatres on Friday, August 11, 2023.
Summary: In Aporia, Sophie (Judy Greer) is a woman who has lost her husband to a drunk driver accident and is struggling to manage her grief while trying to be a good mother to her devastated daughter. She discovers that a friend, a former physicist, has invented a time machine. And Sophie might be able to go back in time to save her husband. However, choices like that always have consequences.
What to Watch For: Aporia was a favorite of 2023 Fantasia Film Festival crowd.
Word on the Street: The film is from filmmaker Jared Moshe, who directed the award-winning 2017 film The Ballad of Lefty Brown.
My Take: I am a huge fan of Judy Greer, who has made a wonderful career playing their best friend in numerous rom-coms.
Passages (2023)
Rating: NC-17
Release Date: In theatres on Friday, August 11, 2023.
Summary: Passages is about the choices we make in relationships. Even though filmmaker Tomas (Franz Rogowski) is married to Martin (Ben Whishaw), Tomas starts an affair with a young schoolteacher, Agathe (Adèle Exarchopoulos). And he is excited by the novelty of being with a woman. Everything seems great until Martin starts an affair of his own. And now Tomas is torn between his husband and his new lover.
What to Watch For: The film played at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival, garnering two nominations, including Best Feature Film.
Word on the Street: The movie is from filmmaker Ira Sachs. He’s best known for his award-winning films Little Men (2017), Love is Strange (2015), and Keep the Lights On (2013).
My Take: I have been a fan of Adèle Exarchopoulos since her ground-breaking role in the 2013 film Blue is the Warmest Color.
King on Screen (2022)
Rating: N/A
Release Date: In theatres on Friday, August 11, 2023.
Summary: King on Screen is a documentary on the films and TV shows based on the works of the master of horror, Stephen King. Brian De Palma directed the first King’s novel adaptation with Carrie (1976). Since then, over 50 directors have adapted Stephen King’s books and stories, making King the most alive-adapted author in the world.
What to Watch For: The film interviews over 25 directors who have adapted King’s works, including Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Walking Dead) and Tom Holland (The Langoliers, Chucky).
Word on the Street: Not only directors are interviewed but also actors, including Dee Wallace (Cujo), James Caan (Misery), and Tim Curry (It).
My Take: I can’t wait to see this film about a man who has inspired such a wide range of movies and TV shows.
Between Two Worlds (2021)
Rating: N/A
Release Date: In theatres on Friday, August 11, 2023.
Summary: In Between Two Worlds, we learn that Marie (Juliette Binoche) is not the job-seeking housewife she says she is. Instead, she’s a journalist researching what it’s like being unemployed and willing to do any type of work. Marie makes friends wherever she goes. But how far is she willing to go to write a book that could make her famous?
What to Watch For: The film was inspired by French journalist Florence Aubenas.
Word on the Street: The film won the Best European Film Award at the 2021 San Sebastian International Film Festival.
My Take: Juliette Binoche is one of the outstanding actors of our time. She won the Oscar for her role in the 1997 film The English Patient.
