In fact, filming for the new season is expected to begin prep in July 2024 under the working title “The Scriptures.”

Here’s what we know so far about the upcoming season. Watch out for spoilers if you’ve not watched Season 1.

Peacemaker Season 2 Is Happening

James Gunn and Peter Safran are still developing new plans for the DC cinematic universe, leading to many casting changes. Gunn has repeatedly confirmed that Peacemaker will still be in the works. The show’s renewal by HBO was also already announced before Gunn and Safran became co-CEOs.

The character Christopher “Chris” Smith, known as Peacemaker, made his cinematic debut in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, the sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 movie. In the film, Peacemaker is the only member of the group who is loyal to Amanda Waller. He even shows himself willing to kill the group’s leader, Rick Flag, to show his loyalty.

In the end, Peacemaker gets shot in the neck by Bloodsport but miraculously survives. Played by John Cena, the character’s involvement in Task Force X plays a part in the show’s first season. The first season saw the titular character working with a group of people.

Gunn has also committed to working on Peacemaker Season 2 as both writer and director of the show. Season two is expected to have eight episodes much like the first season’s eight-episode lineup.

What Will Season 2 Be About?

The possible plot for the second season of Peacemaker is up for speculation following the release of the first season last year. But the ending of season one saw Peacemaker reflect on how he ended up where he is. While his main motivation is to preserve peace and America through any means he sees fit, Peacemaker notices how his decisions have resulted in the people he cares about getting hurt.

The first season also made Peacemaker see that he should go down the superhero path rather than stay the anti-hero. So where does he go from there? We’ll have to see when season two comes out.

Some fans are hoping that unresolved plot points from The Suicide Squad make it to Peacemaker, including the titular character’s tension with Idris Elba’s Bloodsport. There are also the plot threads from season one, including the aftermath of Smith killing his father and the fallout from Leota Adebayo’s decision to expose her mother’s Suicide Squad.

We’ll have to wait and see what Gunn has in store for the characters and the fans.

What Happened in Season 1?

The first season of Peacemaker came shortly after the events of The Suicide Squad when Smith was released from the hospital and recruited to a new Task Force X. The new group’s mission was to stop an alien invasion also known as Project Butterflies. Peacemaker also deals with his racist father.

On the Sad But Happy Podcast, Cena was pressed on the future of the DC cinematic universe with Gunn and Safran at the helm.

“What I will say is I’m very excited about certainly the new leadership at DC. Because I love James Gunn as a human being and Peter Safran as well. I have the utmost respect for them as professionals. I’ve never seen people so prepared and who take it so seriously and have so much passion for it and aren’t afraid to be themselves. What you will see from DC in the future is the heart of James Gunn. He is not going to leave anything on the table,” said Cena.

“He will not make a vanilla movie that says ‘movie’ at the end of it. And then serve it to you. He will take chances. He will be brash. He’ll do things his way. But you will get authentically his creative mind, which I think is brilliant,” Cena added.

Who Will Be in the Peacemaker Cast for Season 2?

John Cena is pretty much guaranteed to reprise the role despite the major casting changes Gunn and Safran made so far. The other surviving member of Team Peacemaker is also expected to return. This includes Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, Jennifer Holland as Agent Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee as John Economos, and Dee Bradley Baker as the voice of Eagly. Holland and Agee also made surprise appearances at the end of Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods in their respective roles.

Given how season one ended, it also wouldn’t be surprising if Viola Davis returns as Amanda Waller. Especially because she’s expected to lead the spin-off, Waller, centered on her character.

Robert Patrick seems unlikely to return to the second season after his character, White Dragon, got shot in the head. But Patrick might still somehow make a repeat appearance. Chukwudi Iwuji isn’t expected to return to season two either as his character was killed in the clash with the Butterfly leader Goff.

Gunn also teased that a few other DC characters may make appearances on the show. This follows the surprise cameos by Ezra Miller and Jason Momoa as Barry Allen/The Flash and Aquaman in season one.

Peacemaker Season 2 Release Date Speculation

Peacemaker is set to begin prep for filming Season 2 in July 2024 in Vancouver. However, a release date has yet to be announced. The show was not included in Gunn’s slate of movies and shows under the first phase of the DC Universe. Gunn added that the list was incomplete at the time. So we could still see the second season come up sometime soon.

Gunn also confirmed that Peacemaker Season 2 would be released following Superman: Legacy and Waller. The Waller spinoff is confirmed to bring back characters from Peacemaker and tie into the events of Peacemaker Season 2. We also know that Superman: Legacy has already begun filming and will continue through August 2024 and is scheduled for a July 11, 2025 release date.

This timeline means that fans won’t see Peacemaker Season 2 until mid-to-late 2025 at the earliest.

Until then, fans can still watch the first season with other DC shows like Titans, Doom Patrol, and Harley Quinn among others. Fans can also expect to see more DC shows coming to the streaming service, including Booster Gold, Creature Commandos, Waller, Lanterns, and Paradise Lost.

An Early Return for Peacemaker?

Fans can also see Peacemaker make a return ahead of season two but in a different capacity. NetherRealm Studios announced that Peacemaker will be part of the Mortal Kombat games as a DLC character. Peacemaker will be joining Omni-Man from Invincible, Homelander from The Boys, and Mortal Kombat characters Quan Chi, Ermac, and Takeda.
