7 New Movies Out This Week: ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3,’ ‘The Nun II,’ and More!

New Movies Coming Out This Week include My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3

This week, seven new movies are coming out in theaters and on streaming! Curious what they are? We have you covered.

First, we’re returning for another adventure with Toula and her big Greek family, this time to the mother country, in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3. We also get to revisit the evil that is the nun named Valak in The Nun II, the followup to The Conjuring universe’s most financially successful movie.

Additionally, we see a baker try to meet guys by bringing a cake to a bar every week for a year in Amazon’s Sitting in Bars with Cake. And, last but not least, we get to watch the adventures of two very different friends in 1987 El Paso in Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3  (2023)

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, September 8, 2023.

Summary: In My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 Toula’s (Nia Vardalos) beloved father has passed away since we saw the Portokalos family, and his last wish was that the family visit Greece. So pack up the Souvlaki, and let’s follow the family as they visit the homeland and have a family reunion to last a lifetime.

What to Watch For: Michael Constantine, who played the father, Gus in the first two films, died in 2021. The film is dedicated to his memory.

Word on the Street: Star of the film, Nia Vardalos, has written all three films. This is the first in the series where she also directed the film.

My Take: Andrea Martin, as Aunt Voula, always cracks me up in these films.

The Nun II

The Nun II   (2023)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, September 8, 2023.

Summary: The Nun II opens up when a priest has been murdered, and an evil is spreading. Once again, Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) is sent to investigate the murder and comes face-to-face with Valak (Bonnie Aarons), the demon nun.

What to Watch For: This is a sequel to the award-winning 2018 film with Taissa Farmiga and Bonnie Aarons reprising their roles.

Word on the Street: The movie was shot in an actual abandoned church in France.

My Take: The film is an off-shoot of the Conjuring film series, with ‘The Nun’ first appearing in the 2016 film The Conjuring 2.

Sitting in Bars with Cake   (2023)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: Premiering on Amazon Prime on Friday, September 8, 2023.

Summary: Sitting in Bars with Cake is about Jane (Yara Shahidi), a great baker, but because she is shy, she sucks at meeting guys. After a successful test run, Jane’s best friend Corinne (Odessa A’zion) convinces Jane to commit to a year of baking cakes and bringing them to bars once a week with the goal of meeting guys. They call it ‘cakebarring’. The two are about to go on a journey together unlike anything they have ever experienced.

What to Watch For: Two-time Oscar-nominated Bette Midler plays the two girls boss.

Word on the Street: The film is based on Audrey Shulman’s cookbook Sitting in Bars with Cakes: Lessons and Recipes from One Year of Trying to Bake My Way to a Boyfriend, based on her true-life experiences. Shulman also wrote the screenplay of the movie.

My Take: I love we get to see 50 different cakes in the film. I bet the cast and crew tired of cake by the end of the shoot.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe   (2022)

Summary: Set in El Paso in 1987, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe tells the story of Aristotle (Max Pelayo) and Dante (Reese Gonzales). The two become friends despite how different their families are. And they spend most of their time at the community pool. Soon, the two are separated, but no matter what obstacles come their way, they are determined to stay best friends.

What to Watch For: The film was a tremendous hit on the film festival circuit, winning the Director to Watch Award for Aitch Alberto at the 2023 Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film is based on the 2012 YA novel of the same name by Benjamin Alire Sáenz.

My Take: I have heard great things about this film from other film critics who saw it at film festivals.

Joyce Carol Oates: A Body in the Service of Mind

Joyce Carol Oates: A Body in the Service of Mind   (2021)

Release Date: In select theatres and on Apple TV and Amazon on Friday, September 8, 2023.

Summary: The documentary Joyce Carol Oates: A Body in the Service of Mind profiles Joyce Carol Oates, one of the most prolific writers in American literature. Oates’s career has spanned over one hundred novels in a variety of genres. This is the story of a writer who put much of her personal life into her writing.

What to Watch For: The filmmaker, Stig Björkman, is a personal friend of Oates and was given unprecedented access to her work, everyday life, and archival footage.

Word on the Street: Sections of Oates’s novels are read by actress Laura Dern in the documentary.

My Take: I loved Stig Björkman’s 2015 documentary Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words.

My Animal

My Animal   (2023)

Summary: In My Animal, Heather (Bobbi Salvör Menuez) is determined to become a hockey goalie and is used to working out either alone or with her father and twin brothers. Heather meets a figure skater named Jonny (Amandla Stenberg), and Heather’s world changes. They begin a relationship, but Heather has a deep, dark secret that her family has hidden for years, and it will become something the two will have to deal with if the relationship is to go on.

What To Watch For: The film made its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

Word on the Street: This is the first feature film for director Jacqueline Castel, best known for her award-winning short horror film The Puppet Man.

My Take: I am very intrigued by the trailer for this film.

Amerikatsi

Amerikatsi   (2022)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, September 8, 2023.

Summary: Amerikatsi is about Charlie, who, as a young boy, escaped Armenia by stowing away in a trunk on a ship bound for America. In 1947, Charlie goes back to Armenia and is instantly arrested and put into prison. There, he almost goes crazy but an earthquake creates a hole in his prison wall, which gives him a viewpoint into a nearby apartment. Charlie then survives by watching the couple in the apartment, living vicariously through them.

What to Watch For: The film is written and directed by Michael A. Goorjian, who also stars as Charlie.

Word on the Street: The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2022 Mystic Film Festival.

My Take: I love the tagline for the film: Freedom is a State of Mind.
