New Movies Coming Out This Week: A Haunting in Venice

Hold onto your popcorn, because this week is jam-packed with exciting new movies coming out!

Get ready for a thrilling ride as Kenneth Branagh resurrects the legendary detective Hercule Poirot in the bone-chilling mystery, A Haunting in Venice. Next, we have the inspirational A Million Miles Away, which tells the story of the first migrant farmworker to travel to space. And, we also have the romantic Love at First Sight, starring Haley Lu Richardson and Ben Hardy.

Next, we have Zendaya taking center stage in Challengers, a captivating love triangle tale. Then we have a documentary about the groundbreaking model Luna in Donyale Luna: Supermodel. And to round things out, we have a gunslinger who poses as a preacher in Outlaw Johnny Black and a gay Lucha Libre wrestler in Cassandro.

A Haunting in Venice

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, September 15, 2023.

Summary: In A Haunting in Venice, Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh) has retired, giving up solving crimes. And now, he is living in his own exile in post-World War II Venice. He reluctantly attends a seance. And one of the guests is murdered. Now, it’s up to the world’s foremost detective to once again solve a crime and uncover the killer, even if it brings up ghosts from the past.

What to Watch For: This is the third film that Kenneth Branagh has directed and starred in based on the stories of one of the world’s most famous mystery writers, Agatha Christie.

Word on the Street: The cast includes Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Dornan, Tina Fey, Kelly Reilly, Dylan Corbett Bader, Amir El-Masry, Riccardo Scamarcio, and Fernando Piloni.

My Take: I love a good mystery, and I think Branagh has done a brilliant job bringing Hercule Poirot to life.

A Million Miles Away

A Million Miles Away   (2023)

Release Date: Premiering on Amazon Prime on Friday, September 15, 2023.

Summary: A Million Miles Away is the story of Jose Hernandez (Michael Peña), who started out as a migrant farmworker who, after putting himself through school to become an engineer and then, against the odds, became an astronaut. 

What to Watch For: The film is based on a true story.

Word on the Street: This is the directorial debut of Alejandra Márquez Abella, an award-winning screenwriter known for her films Northern Skies over Empty Space (2023) and The Good Girls (2019).

My Take: I am a fan of Rosa Salazar, who plays Jose’s wife in the film. Salazar is known for her roles as Zoe on Parenthood, Brenda in the Maze Runner series, Lucy in Bird Box, and Alita in Alita: Battle Angel.

Love at First Sight

Love at First Sight   (2023)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date:  Premiering on Netflix on Friday, September 15, 2023.

Summary: Love at First Sight starts on a long flight from New York to London, where Hadley (Haley Lu Richardson) and Oliver (Ben Hardy) meet and sparks fly. After Oliver gives Hadley his phone number, there is an accident, and the number is lost. What’s the odds of Hadley ever finding Oliver in a city as big as London? Love sometimes has a way of defying the odds.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the 2011 YA novel The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith.

Word on the Street: Haley Lu Richardson plays Portia in the ten-time Emmy award-winning TV series The White Lotus.

My Take: I am always up for a romantic film, especially one set in London.

Challengers

Summary: In Challengers, Tashi (Zendaya) is a former tennis prodigy turned coach who is married to a fellow tennis player, Art (Mike Faist), a former champion who is on a huge losing streak. Tashi’s strategy for her husband’s comeback takes an unexpected turn when he has to take on Patrick (Josh O’Connor), Art’s former best friend and, more importantly, Tashi’s former boyfriend. As past and present collide, Tashi has to ask herself what winning will cost.

What to Watch For: The film is directed by Luca Guadagnino, best known for his Academy Award-nominated 2017 film Call Me By Your Name.

Word on the Street: Austin Abrams, Jacob Elordi, and Dominic Fike were all up for the role of Patrick before Josh O’Connor was picked.

My Take: I will see anything that two-time Emmy award-winner Zendaya is in.

Outlaw Johnny Black

Outlaw Johnny Black   (2023)

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, September 15, 2023.

Summary: Outlaw Johnny Black is about a gunslinger named Johnny Black (Michael Jai White). Black is hell-bent on avenging his father’s death. And he vows to do anything to gun down the man who killed him. Little did Johnny know soon he would pose as a preacher in a small mining town to find his father’s killer.

What to Watch For: The film is directed and co-written by the film’s star, Michael Jai White.

Word on the Street: The film’s cast includes Jill Scott, Tommy Davidson, Eme ikwuakor, Kym Whitley, Glynn Turman, Kevin Chapman, Barry Bostwick, Erica Ash and Anika Noni Rose.

My Take: The trailer reminds me of some of the western films of Jim Brown.

Donyale Luna: Supermodel

Release Date: Premiering on Max on Wednesday, September 13, 2023.

Summary: Donyale Luna: Supermodel is a documentary about the remarkable life and career of Donyale Luna. Luna broke countless barriers in the fashion industry. And, before her death at the age of 33, she was the first Black model to grace the cover of both Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue.

What to Watch For: Luna’s daughter, Dream Cazzaniga, reads from the model’s journals in the film.

Word on the Street: Interviewed for the film are supermodels Beverly Johnson and Pat Cleveland, photographers David Bailey, Gideon Lewin, and David McCabe, and Vogue editor-at-large Hamish Bowles.

My Take: This looks to be a fascinating documentary.

Cassandro

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, September 15, 2023, and on Amazon Prime on Friday, September 22, 2023.

Summary: Cassandro tells the story of Saúl Armendáriz (Gael Garcia Bernal). He is a gay man who, in the macho wrestling world of Lucha Libre, became a star as the character Cassandro, an ‘exotico.’

What to Watch For: The film is based on a true story and had its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The Oscar and Emmy-winning filmmaker Roger Ross Williams is responsible for this title.

My Take: I have been a fan of Gael Garcia Bernal since his starring role as Che Guevara in the 2004 film The Motorcycle Diaries.

El Conde

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, September 15, 2023.

Summary: In El Conde, Dictator Augusto Pinochet (Jaime Vadell) is tired of life. After losing control of his country during a bloody reign of power, Pinochet is ready to die. The only problem is that he is a vampire that has lived over 250 years. 

What to Watch For: The film is from award-winning filmmaker Pablo Larrain, known for his movies Spencer (2021), Jackie (2016) and NO (2012).

Word on the Street: The film played at the 2023 Venice Film Festival.

My Take: I find it interesting that Pablo Larrain is revisiting the life of Augusto Pinochet after his film NO, which profiled the advertising executive, played by Gael Garcia Bernal, who came up with a campaign that ultimately defeated the president of Chile in 1988.

Camp Hideout

Camp Hideout  (2023)

Rating: PG

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, September 15, 2023.

Summary: Camp Hideout is about Noah (Ethan Drew), a troubled kid who has stolen an important video game from some very bad men. What better place to hide out than a church summer camp? Unfortunately, the big city goons have found Noah. And now, he must take on the bad guys with a bit of help from his fellow campers.

What to Watch For: Legendary actor Christopher Lloyd plays the man in charge of the camp in the film.

Word on the Street: The film is directed by Sean Olson, whose 2019 film Max Winslow and the House of Secrets was a significant hit on the film festival circuit.

My Take: Everyone remembers Christopher Lloyd from his roles in the TV series Taxi and the film series Back to the Future and The Addams Family. I, however, will always remember him from his role as Taber in the 1975 classic film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Lloyd’s first film role.

The Inventor

The Inventor   (2023)

Rating: PG

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, September 15, 2023.

Summary: The Inventor shows us that before he became a famous artist and inventor, Leonardo da Vinci had to learn about life. And to do that, he sets out on an adventure with the help of a French princess and a few of his friends.

What to Watch For: The film’s voice cast includes Stephen Fry, Daisy Ridley, Marion Cotillard, Max Baumgarten, and Matt Berry.

Word on the Street: The film uses both stop-motion and 2D animation to tell the story.

My Take: I am a big fan of stop-motion animation. So this movie isn’t one I’ll miss.
