Early Life & Career

Jason Statham was born on July 26, 1967, in Shirebrook, Derbyshire, England. Statham grew up in the seaside town of Great Yarmouth. His mother, Eileen, was a dancer, and his father, Barry, sold street goods.

Growing up, Statham played football (also known as soccer) in his local grammar school. And before venturing into acting, Statham originally pursued a career in diving and was part of the British National Diving Squad for 12 years. He also competed as a diver for England at the 1990 Commonwealth Games.

“I wasn’t actually in the Olympic Games. But I spent 12 years on the national squad,” Statham told IGN. “It was a great experience, you know, to travel the world and compete at a certain level. It teaches you discipline and focus, and certainly keeps you out of trouble.”

But after some disappointing attempts at the Olympic Trials and Championships, Statham decided to pursue modeling and acting instead. In 1998, an agent spotted Jason Statham, and his acting and modeling career began. Even during his time as a swimmer, Statham pursued a modeling career, modeling for brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Lee, Levi’s, and the French Connection.

“We chose Jason because we wanted our model to look like a normal guy. His look is just for right now – very masculine and not too male-modely,” said a rep for the French Connection.

Statham also appeared in some music videos, including Erasure’s Run to the Sun. To make a living, Statham also followed in his father’s footsteps and sold goods on the street.

Acting and Modeling

Statham was a model for the French Connection when he was spotted by director Guy Ritchie. Ritchie would go on to cast Statham for his film Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. The film grossed over $80 million in box office sales, marking the start of Statham’s Hollywood career.

“I used to put money in my pocket while working on the street corners, selling perfume and jewelry, and other goods that were supposedly expensive,” Statham recalled to IGN about his struggles before Hollywood.

Statham would work with Ritchie again for his 2000 film Snatch alongside Brad Pitt and Benicio del Toro. Snatch would also earn over $80 million at the box office.

Statham would also appear in several more films, such as The One and Ghosts of Mars. And, in 2005, Ritchie would cast Statham yet again for his film Revolver. However, the film bombed at the box office, only grossing $7.2 million globally.

Statham shared that he wanted to model his film career after Sylvester Stallone’s and was honored to star in the 2013 movie Homefront. Stallone originally wrote the part for himself but asked Statham to star in it instead.

“If I could get five to 10 percent of what he had for a career and what he has done for the film industry, I’d be over the moon,” Statham told Men’s Journal. “I mean, he’s an exception – the Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture for Rocky!”
