Cobra Kai Season 6 – The Final Season

Netflix is bringing back Cobra Kai to the platform for another season, making the announcement on January 20, 2023. The renewal of Cobra Kai is bittersweet as the sixth season will also mark the show’s last. Showrunners Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg posted a statement announcing that the sixth season will be the last for the show.

“Our day one goal with Cobra Kai has always been to end it on our terms, leaving the Valley in the time and place we’ve always imagined. So, it is with immense pride and thankfulness that we are able to announce that achievement. The upcoming Season Six will mark the conclusion of Cobra Kai,” said the showrunners.

“While this may be a bittersweet day for the fandom, the Miyagiverse has never been stronger. This fandom is the BEST on the planet and we hope to be telling more Karate Kid stories with you down the line. Because as we all know, Cobra Kai Never Dies,” the showrunners added, also hyping up the upcoming season.

Schlossberg echoed that Season 6 would be the last when he reacted to the renewal. The creators have long teased that Cobra Kai would be six seasons long.

“Big thanks to the fans for getting us to the finish line. Now get ready for one final round and lots of big surprises along the way,” said Schlossberg.

The show, described as the sequel to the original Karate Kid movies, was first shown on YouTube before moving over to Netflix after two seasons. Since then, Cobra Kai has been one of the streaming platform’s most-watched shows. Cobra Kai takes place 34 years after the original movies and restarts the rivalry between Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence.

Season 6 Plot

Officially, Hurwitz has only revealed that Cobra Kai Season 6 would take place around one year after the second season’s finale. We can only base what might happen in Season 6 on what happened in Season 5. Several characters are vying for a stake in Cobra Kai, especially after Terry Silver was arrested.

Mike Barnes and Kim Da-Eun may find themselves at odds with each other over Cobra Kai, and a civil war might erupt should Mike lead Terry’s students against Da-Eun’s. If Kreese is involved with Da-Eun, he might try to manipulate the situation. Kreese could get Da-Eun to stake her 50 percent against Mike’s 50 percent in a winner-takes-all bet at the Sekai Takai.

Since Kreese escaped from prison, he could only turn to Da-Eun, who happens to be the granddaughter of his former master.

“Kreese certainly has a complicated legal situation as we enter S6. I don’t think it’s safe to assume anything,” Hurwitz teased about the character.

Knowing that Silver was defeated, we can assume that Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fan can make their returns by reopening their dojos and starting training the students. As to who might represent their respective dojos? It’s unclear. However, Miguel and Hawk are likely going to represent Eagle Fang and Miyagi-Do respectively.

There’s also the fact that Johnny is having a baby with Carmen, which could affect his attendance at the Sekai Takai.

Cobra Kai Cast

We can expect most of the cast to return for Cobra Kai Season 6. This includes Ralph Macchio and William Zabka as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence respectively. Also returning are Courtney Henggeler as Amanda LaRusso, Xolo Mariduena as Miguel Diaz, Tanner Buchanan as Robby Keene, Mary Mouser as Samantha LaRusso, and Jacob Bertrand as Hawk.

The same could be said for Gianni DeCenzo as Demetri, Martin Kove as John Kreese, Vanessa Rubio as Carmen Diaz, Peyton List as Tory Nichols, Griffin Santopietro as Anthony LaRusso, Dallas Dupree Young as Kenny Payne, Yuji Okumoto as Chozen, Oona O’Brien as Devon, and Alicia Hannah-Kim as Kim Da-Eun.

Most of the key characters from the original Karate Kid movies have reprised their roles in appearing in Cobra Kai. The only one who has yet to make a return is Hilary Swank, who played Julie Pierce in the movies. Julie could return to help train the Miyagi-Do students for the Sekai Takai. Should there be further conflict with Kim Da-Eun in Season 6, we might see a one-on-one battle between her and Julie.

What Happened in Season 5

In the last season, Terry Silver’s cheating was made known to the students and they all turned their backs on him. Silver was since arrested for his crimes. This also placed the future of Cobra Kai in doubt along with its place in the Sekai Takai. Because Kim Da-Eun has a 50 percent stake in Cobra Kai, she may overcome this bump in the road. She may also use the students from her own dojos in using the Cobra Kai name and branding.

Meanwhile, Mike Barnes revealed to Daniel and Chozen that Terry Silver promised him a 50 percent stake in Cobra Kai years ago. He’s not sure if he can find the document or the lawyer to prove this promise. But there is a chance that Daniel’s former enemy can redeem himself and Cobra Kai should he take over.

Cobra Kai Season 6 Release Date

There is no official word yet on when we’ll see Cobra Kai Season 6 on Netflix. The Cobra Kai writers’ room reopened in mid-February 2023 with a likely budget of $2-3 million per episode. However, the WGA strike began on May 1, 2023, which paused the development of Cobra Kai.

The three showrunners told Deadline on May 20, 2023, that they were set to start filming on the day the strike began.

“We hate to strike, but if we must, we strike hard. Pencils down in the Cobra Kai writers’ room. No writers on set. These aren’t fun times, but it’s unfortunately necessary. The moment a fair deal is in place, we’ll get back to kicking ass. In the meantime, sending strength and support to the negotiating committee. You got this,” said the showrunners.

But by July 2023, SAG-AFTRA also called for a strike, effectively pausing work on Cobra Kai. As of late fall 2023, both strikes have ended. And production is scheduled to begin this month in Atlanta under the working title “The Arborist.”

The goal is for the series to return in 2024, but it will likely be late 2024 at the earliest since production is just starting to ramp back up. There will be 10 episodes in Season 6, and the total runtime for the series will be the longest so far. (As confirmed by co-creator Hayden Schlossberg on X, formerly known as Twitter)

However, the final season would most likely come around 2025. For now, fans can rewatch the first five seasons of the show on Netflix.
