New Movies Coming Out This Week: Taylor Swift Concert Movie

This week, there’s a massive movie releasing, which has already sold over 36 million dollars worth of tickets! That would, of course, be the concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour!

If you don’t already have your tickets to see Taylor, there are some other movies that are worth checking out, including a drama about a mysterious death that could be an accident or a murder in Anatomy of a Fall. There’s also The Mission, which tells the story of a young missionary who died while visiting a remote island with an isolated Indigenous population.

Additionally, there’s a horror film in Dear David based on a viral Twitter thread. And there’s also a movie about what happens to two people when a date goes wrong in Cat Person.

Summary: Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour brings the phenomenon on the big screen as Taylor Swift brings her Eras Tour to the cinema. Experience the once-in-a-lifetime concert film experience that made this a history-making tour.

What to Watch For: The film was shot during the Los Angeles concerts in August 2023.

Word on the Street: The director of the film, Sam Wrench, brought us BTS: Permission to Dance on Stage (2022), Brandi Carlile: In the Canyon Haze Live (2022) and Billie Eilish Live at the 02 (2023).

My Take: I am guessing that there will be lots of dancing in the aisles for this film.

Anatomy of a Fall

Anatomy of a Fall   (2023)

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, October 13, 2023.

Summary: Anatomy of a Fall tells the story of Sandra (Sandra Hüller) and Samuel (Samuel Theis), a famous literary couple living in the French Alps with their partially sighted 11-year-old son, Daniel (Milo Machado Graner). Out for a walk, Daniel finds Samuel’s dead, bloody body in the snow, having fallen from the house’s attic window. Was it an accident? Did Samuel kill himself? Or was he murdered?

What to Watch For: The film has been a sensational hit on the film festival circuit, winning the Palme d’Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Filmmaker Justine Triet wrote the part of Sandra for Sandra Hüller. The two worked together on the 2019 film Sibyl.

My Take: I thought Sandra Hüller was great in Sibyl, so I can’t wait to see this film.

Dear David

Release Date: In theatres and On Demand on Friday, October 13, 2023.

Summary: In Dear David, Adam (Augustus Prew) is a digital comic book artist who is being harassed by digital trolls, so Adam lashes out at them online. An account named ‘Dear David’ asks, ‘Why are you so mean?’ and shortly after, Adam starts experiencing things in his apartment that convince him that Dear David is a dead boy who is now haunting him. The more Adam investigates who David is, the more extreme the haunting becomes.

What to Watch For: The film is based on real-life comic book artist Adam Ellis, who became famous when he claimed he was being haunted by a ghost named David who was trying to kill him.

Word on the Street: The film is co-produced by BuzzFeed, who Adam Ellis worked for when he did his first Dear David tweet.

My Take: I remember the viral Twitter thread Adam wrote back in 2017, so seeing this horror film will be fun.

The Mission

Summary: The Mission is a documentary with a story in 2018 when the world was shocked by the story of a young American missionary, John Chau, who wanted to bring the word of Jesus to one of the world’s most isolated Indigenous peoples on the planet. That idea cost John his life.

What to Watch For: The film has its world premiere at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The movie is from filmmakers Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss, who won a Primetime Emmy for their 2021 documentary Boys State.

My Take: This film looks both fascinating and terrifying.

Once Within a Time

Summary: Once Within a Time is an experimental film about a fairy tale told through the eyes of children about the end of the world and the beginning of a new one.

What to Watch For: The film is produced by Steven Soderbergh and is directed by Godfrey Reggio, the creator of the legendary 1983 film Koyaanisqatsi.

Word on the Street: The music for the film was done by three-time Academy Award nominee Philip Glass, and Mike Tyson makes a special appearance.

My Take: I loved Reggio’s 1991 short Anima Mundi that he did with Glass.

Silver Dollar Road

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, October 13, 2023, and Amazon Prime on Friday, October 20, 2023.

Summary: Silver Dollar Road is a documentary that tells the story of a Black family in North Carolina who has owned their waterfront property for generations are harassed and tormented for decades by developers who want to take away their property by any means necessary.

What to Watch For: The movie is from filmmaker Raoul Peck who directed the 2017 Oscar-nominated documentary I Am Not Your Negro.

Word on the Street: The film is based on the 2019 ProPublica article by Lizzie Presser, which brought national attention to the fight for the family’s 13 acres of waterfront property.

My Take: I thought I Am Not Your Negro, which was about author James Baldwin’s never completed manuscript, was brilliant.

Cat Person

Cat Person   (2023)

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, October 13, 2023.

Summary: Cat Person is about Margot (Emilia Jones). a 20-year-old college student who works at a local movie theatre. She flirts with a regular named Robert (Nicholas Braun), who is older but seems nice. After online texting, they decide to go on a date. This story is about what happens afterward when that date doesn’t go well.

What to Watch For: The outstanding cast includes Geraldine Viswanathan as Margot’s best friend, Isabella Rossellini as a nosey college professor, and Hope Davis as Margot’s mother.

Word on the Street: The film made its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and is based on a 2017 New Yorker short story of the same name by Susanna Fogel.

My Take: Hope Davis stars in a couple of favorite films of mine, Next Stop Wonderland (19998) and Mumford (1999).
