Rick and Morty Returns for Season 7

The adult animated series Rick and Morty is coming back with Season 7, after six successful seasons. Following the departure of series creator Justin Roiland over domestic abuse allegations, the show will undergo some big changes. While the allegations against Roiland were eventually dropped, more allegations against the former creator surfaced. This also cast doubt on whether the show would be able to go on.

Adult Swim fired Roiland in January 2023 as a result of the allegations. However, Adult Swim also made clear that Roiland’s departure does not mean Rick and Morty Season 7 will not push through.

“Rick and Morty will continue. The talented and dedicated crew are hard at work on Season 7,” said Adult Swim in a statement announcing Roiland’s firing.

As Roiland is no longer part of Rick and Morty, the show’s co-creator Dan Harmon is presumed to be the sole showrunner. Harmon is also presumed to write and produce the episodes for Rick and Morty moving forward.

“It’s happening,” said Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, regarding the official trailer for Rick and Morty Season 7. “Thanks to the talent of the entire show team, we can all enjoy 10 episodes that yet again raise the bar for comedy and animation. This season proves that the geniuses at work on Rick and Morty are just getting started.”

Rick and Morty Season 7 Plot

There’s not much to go on when it comes to Rick and Morty Season 7 in terms of specifics. But, we can only guess what might happen following the Season 6 finale. This involves a plot point that was introduced far back in Season 3.

In Season 3, Rick took an intergalactic government agent on a trip through his memories. After getting some of the Szechuan Sauce, Rick revealed to the agent that the version of his wife and daughter in his universe was killed by another Rick: Rick Prime. Rick later admitted to the agent that he made up the backstory to buy himself some time. However, in the Season 5 finale, Rick may have been telling the truth after all.

After showing Morty his “crybaby backstory,” Rick Prime turns out to be an authentic Rick, who really did kill Rick’s wife and daughter. Rick has since sought to find Rick Prime and avenge his family. Even if Rick found a new family in Morty and the Smiths, he still wanted to find Rick Prime. Rick told Morty in the Season 6 finale that he’s going to spend the entirety of Season 7 finding Rick Prime.

The season summary also hinted at the recasting.

“Rick and Morty are back and sounding more like themselves than ever. It’s season seven and the possibilities are endless: what’s up with Jerry? EVIL Summer?! And will they ever go back to the high school?! Maybe not! But let’s find out! There’s probably less piss than last season. ‘Rick and Morty,’ 100 years! Or at least until Season 10!”

What to Expect

Rick and Morty Season 7 will be made up of 10 episodes. Adult Swim committed to its 70-episode order of the animated show and the tradition of its previous seasons. While there’s no teaser trailer for Rick and Morty Season 7, Adult Swim did drop a recap of the show highlighting Rick Prime.

The teaser’s mostly filled with flashbacks, but there’s also a peek into the future with Rick and Morty having different voices. There was also a new video revealing the episode titles for Rick and Morty Season 7, which dropped on August 31. A new opening sequence for Season 7 was also released on September 18, 2023, teasing zombies, Summer deadlifting Rick, Swole Jerry, giant heads, and an alien palace among other things.

However, the full-fledged trailer for Rick and Morty Season 7 dropped on September 25. The new trailer gave fans a preview of the new voice actors for the titular characters.

Harmon previously told The Wrap that regular installments will now arrive annually and that he was just as surprised following the big gaps between seasons.

“This is the strangest thing I’ve ever said about the show and it still feels unreal to say it, but we’ll be doing a season a year now,” said Harmon.

“I still don’t understand how that’s possible. But that’s why it never happened on my watch. Scott is able to keep us on a schedule that mostly involves being so ahead of schedule that we can actually release things in a timely manner,” added Harmon, referring to showrunner Scott Marder.

Rick and Morty Cast

Perhaps the biggest question fans now have when it comes to Rick and Morty Season 7 is who is replacing Roiland, who voices both characters. Roiland also voiced the variants of the two characters and other background characters like the Mr. Poopy Butt Hole. The roles would most definitely be recast, either in the form of one voice actor or two separate actors.

Even if the trailer gave fans a sample of Rick and Morty’s new voices, the names of the actor (or actors) have yet to be revealed.

Fortunately, the rest of the main supporting cast will be returning for Rick and Morty Season 7. This includes Chris Parnell as Jerry Smith, Spencer Grammer as Summer Smith, and Sarah Chalke as both Beth Smith and Space Beth Smith.

It’s also possible that there would be recurring and side characters making an appearance. This might include Kari Wahlgren as Jessica, Brandon Johnson as Mr. Goldenfold, and Keith David as the President. The show is also known to feature celebrity guest stars in its episodes.
