We have 12 new movies coming out this week, including a film from legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese. The movie, Killers of the Flower Moon, boasts a cast headlined by Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro and is already being touted as a frontrunner for award season.

Adding to the possible award-winning lineup, we have a biopic Nyad that stars Annette Bening and Jodie Foster. The film is based on the true story of a woman at age 60 who attempted to swim 110 miles from Cuba to Florida in shark-infested waters.

And we have a documentary, The Devil on Trial, about a court case that shocked a nation and whose story became part of The Conjuring franchise.

It’s a great lineup of new movies coming out this week, with films for every taste! Below is the full list of all the new movies coming out this week in theaters and streaming!

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, October 20, 2023.

Summary: Killers of the Flower Moon is the story of the Osage tribe, who were given land no one wanted to create their reservation. However, oil was discovered on their land, and the tribe became wealthy. Because of this new development, the tribe is being murdered one by one under mysterious circumstances, and the FBI is on the case.

What to Watch For: The movie is from Martin Scorsese and is one of the frontrunners for next year’s Academy Awards.

Word on the Street: The cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons, John Lithgow, Brendan Fraser, Cara Jade Myers, Tantoo Cardinal, Jason Isbell, and William Belleau.

My Take: After outstanding appearances in Winter in the Blood (2013), First Cow (2019), and The Unknown Country (2022), Lily Gladstone is being talked about as a frontrunner for the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in this film.

Nyad  (2023)

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, October 20, 2023, and on Netflix on Friday, November 3, 2023.

Summary: Nyad is a film about Diana Nyad (Annette Bening), a retired marathon swimmer turned sports journalist. At 60, she teams up with her best friend and coach (Jodie Foster) to accomplish her lifelong goal. To swim the 110-mile open-water trek from Cuba to Florida.

What to Watch For: The film is based on a remarkable true story detailed in Diana Nyad’s autobiography Find a Way.

Word on the Street: The film at its World Premiere at the 50th Telluride Film Festival.

My Take: I am a huge fan of Diana Nyad and can’t wait to see this movie.

The Devil on Trial

Release Date: Premieres on Netflix on Tuesday, October 17, 2023.

Summary: The Devil on Trial is a documentary that explores the first and only time ‘demonic possession’ has been officially used as a defense in a U.S. murder trial.

What to Watch For: Famous paranormal investigators and authors Ed and Lorraine Warren testified at the trial.

Word on the Street: The 2021 film The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is loosely based on this murder and the trial that followed.

My Take: Director Chris Holt is known for his 2019 award-winning short drama 3 Sleeps.

The Other Zoey

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, October 20, 2023.

Summary: The Other Zoey is about Zoey (Josephine Langford), a brilliant computer nerd who loves to study and has her sights set on graduating with honors. Her world is turned upside down when Zack (Drew Starkey), a college soccer star, is in an accident and wakes up thinking, because of amnesia, that Zoey, the first person he saw after the accident, is his girlfriend. Told that he must remember on his own terms, Zoey goes along with the lie, and things get really complicated.

What to Watch For: Josephine Langford is best known for her role as Tessa in the 2019 film After. Langford won the Choice Drama Movie Actress for the role at the 2019 Teen Choice Awards.

Word on the Street: Filmmaker Sara Zandieh is known for her award-winning 2019 film A Simple Wedding.

My Take: One of my favorite actors, Andie MacDowell, plays Zack’s mom in the film.

Butcher's Crossing

Butcher’s Crossing  (2023)

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, October 20, 2023.

Summary: In Butcher’s Crossing, Will (Fred Hechinger) has dropped out of Harvard to explore the American West. He joins a group of buffalo hunters led by Miller (Nicolas Cage), who is out to bring back a record haul. Will’s great adventure will turn into a journey that risks his life and sanity.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the best-selling book of the same name by John Edward Williams.

Word on the Street: Gabe Polsky, known for his award-winning documentaries Red Army (2014) and Red Penguins (2019), directs the film.

My Take: Who doesn’t want to see a bald-headed Nic Cage going nuts hunting buffalo?

The Canterville Ghost

The Canterville Ghost  (2023)

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, October 20, 2023.

Summary: The Canterville Ghost is about Sir Simon De Canterville (voiced by Stephen Fry), who has been haunting his castle for 300 years. He waits for someone to commit a brave act and release him from his curse. Into his life comes Virginia (voiced by Emily Carey), whose American family has just moved in. Virginia makes a deal with Sir Simon. If he can help make her family leave and return to America, she will help Sir Simon break his curse.

What to Watch For: The voice cast includes Toby Jones, Hugh Laurie, Freddie Highmore, Meera Syal, Imelda Staunton, and Miranda Hart.

Word on the Street: Besides starring in the film, Stephen Fry is one of the executive producers.

My Take: I love that the film is based on a short story by Oscar Wilde.

Old Dads

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, October 20, 2023.

Summary: Old Dads is about three best friends and co-workers (Bill Burr, Bobby Cannavale, and Bokeem Woodbine) who have found themselves fathers later in life. They plan on being the best fathers they can be, but they will have to battle new age principals, millennial CEOs, and the world that has changed a lot since their youth in the 80s.

What to Watch For: Bill Burr, the stand-up comedian and actor known for his role as Patrick Kuby in the TV series Breaking Bad, wrote and directed the film.

Word on the Street: The cast includes Natasha Leggero, Josh Brener, Miles Robbins, Abbie Cobb, C. Thomas Howell, and Rachel Harris.

My Take: I love the tagline for the film: ‘Times have changed. They didn’t get the fax.’

Malibu Horror Story

Malibu Horror Story  (2023)

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, October 20, 2023.

Summary: Malibu Horror Story occurs seven years after four teens went missing on a hike to explore a cave. A team of paranormal investigators are determined to find out what happened to the teens as they search a sacred cave for clues. The investigators couldn’t have predicted the terror they would encounter in the cave near Malibu.

What to Watch For: The film has been a massive hit on the film festival circuit, winning over fifty awards, including Best Horror Feature at the 2021 Atlanta Horror Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Before Malibu Horror Story, writer/director Scott Slone was best known for his award-winning short Old Man Music (2005).

My Take: I have heard from fellow film critics that this is an excellent take on the found-footage horror genre.

The Pigeon Tunnel

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, October 20, 2023, and streaming on Apple TV+.

Summary: The Pigeon Tunnel is a documentary on the legendary writer John le Carré, whose writing thrilled readers for over six decades with novels The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and A Perfect Spy.

What to Watch For: The film is the last interview that le Carré gave before he died in 2020.

What to Watch For: The documentary is from Oscar-winning filmmaker Earl Morris (The Fog of War (2004)).

My Take: John le Carré is one of my favorite writers, and with Earl Morris at the helm, this should be an outstanding documentary.

The Persian Version

The Persian Version  (2023)

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, October 20, 2023.

Summary: The Persian Version takes place when a large Iranian-American family gathers, and a family secret is uncovered that will force an estranged mother (Niousha Noor) and her unconventional daughter (Layla Mohammadi) into a journey of exploration. It turns out that mother and daughter are more alike than ever imagined.

What to Watch For: The film won two awards at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, including the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award.

Word on the Street: Niousha Noor is best known for her role as Nazan Abassi in the TV Mini-Series Kaleidoscope.

My Take: I just discovered Layla Mohammadi in the TV series Special Ops: Lioness.

Another Body

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, October 20, 2023.

Summary: The documentary Another Body follows a college student’s search for answers and justice when she discovers that there is deepfake pornography of herself on the internet. Her investigation uncovers that this is more common than she could ever imagine.

What to Watch For: The film won the Special Jury Award for Documentary Feature at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film is at an outstanding 94% on Rotten Tomatoes with over 15 film critic reviews.

My Take: it shocked me when watching the trailer that there is nothing the police can do about this until the laws have been changed.

Sick Girl

Sick Girl  (2023)

Rating: R

Release Date: On Demand and Digital on Friday, October 20, 2023.

Summary: In Sick Girl, Wren (Nina Dobrev) feels like her friends are stuck in a rut, grown apart, and they have forgotten how to have a good time. So what’s a girl to do? Why not start a simple little lie to rally everyone? The lie: Wren has cancer.

What to Watch For: The cast includes Ray McKinnon, Stephanie Koenig, Brandon Mychal Smith, Sherry Cola, and Wendi McLendon-Covey.

Word on the Street: This is writer/director Jennifer Cram’s first feature film. She has worked in the casting departments of films such as Inception (2010, Dragonball Evolution (2009), and Prestige (2006).

My Take: Sherry Cola has been on a hot streak with films like Shortcomings (2023), Joy Ride (2023), and the TV Series Good Trouble.
