New Movies Coming Out This Week: Priscilla

There are nine new movies coming out this week, and we have the details on all them!

First up, it’s time to learn a little about living with the King in Graceland in the film Priscilla. The movie stars Cailee Spaeny in the title role and Jacob Elordi as Elvis. The film is directed by Sofia Coppola and based on the book Elvis and Me.

Next, we have the rom-com What Happens Later, which stars Meg Ryan and is written and directed by her. Then there is a new thriller, The Marsh King’s Daughter, starring Daisy Ridley, based on the best-selling book.

And, we also have a comedy, Quiz Lady, where Awkwafina and Sandra Oh play sisters trying to win money on a game show so their mother can come out of hiding from the mob.

All that and more because it’s a great week to see a movie!

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, November 3, 2023.

Summary: Priscilla tells the story of teenage Priscilla Beaulieu (Cailee Spaeny), who meets rock and roll superstar Elvis (Jacob Elordi) and begins a romance that the world followed until his death. Priscilla tells the one woman who knew Elvis the best in private moments: a thrilling crush, an alley in loneliness, and a vulnerable best friend.

What to Watch For: Cailee Spaeny won Best Actress at the 2023 Venice Film Festival, where the film received a seven-minute standing ovation.

Word on the Street: The film is based on the 1985 memoir Elvis and Me by Priscilla Presley. Priscilla is an executive producer of the film.

My Take: It will be interesting to see how Priscilla the movie portrays Elvis after last year’s Elvis film from Baz Luhrmann.

Summary: In What Happens Later, Willa (Meg Ryan) and Bill (David Duchovny) are ex-lovers who were together over twenty years ago. They are now stuck in an airport overnight together. Will they find the spark again, or is it too late?

What to Watch For: What Happens Later is the second feature film Meg Ryan directed and the first time as a writer.

Word on the Street: This is Meg Ryan’s return to acting after an eight-year hiatus.

My Take: Come on, who can resist a rom-com starring Meg Ryan? I know I can’t.

Summary: The Marsh King’s Daughter is about Helena (Daisy Ridley), who has a past that she has tried to forget. Her father, known as the Marsh King, kidnapped Helena’s mother, and two years later, Helena was born. At age ten, the Marsh King was caught and put away. Now, he has escaped and is after Helena and her daughter. Helena will use everything he taught her about surviving in the wilderness and keeping her family safe.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Karen Dionne.

Word on the Street: The movie is from filmmaker Neil Burger, best known for The Illusionist (2006) and Divergent (2014).

My Take: Of course, Daisy Ridley is best known for her role as Rey in the Star Wars films.

Quiz Lady

Quiz Lady  (2023)

Release Date: Premieres on Hulu on Friday, November 3, 2023.

Summary: In the comedy Quiz Lady, Anne’s (Awkwafina) mother owes eighty thousand dollars to the mob because of gambling debts and has run away from the nursing home. Anne and her sister (Sandra Oh) devise a plan to get Anne on a game show to win the money to get their mother off the hit list.

What To Watch For: The cast includes Tony Hale, Holland Taylor, Jason Schwartzman, and Will Ferrell.

Word on the Street: The film is directed by Jessica Yu, known for her directorial work on TV series such as The Morning Show, In Treatment, and This is Us.

My Take: I still think Awkwafina should have been nominated for an Academy Award for her role as Billi in the 2019 film The Farewell.

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, November 3, 2023.

Summary: Radical is about Sergio (Eugenio Derbez), a teacher in a Mexican border town where his students live in a world filled with neglect, crime, and violence. However, Sergio is a different type of teacher who challenges his students’ curiosity and drive to succeed, even when the odds seem against them.

What to Watch For: Based on a true story.

Word on the Street: The film has been a hit on the film festival circuit, including winning the Festival Favorite Award at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

My Take: Eugenio Derbez starred in Instructions Not Included, which in 2013, his movie broke box office records worldwide for a Spanish Language film.

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, November 3, 2023, and on Netflix on Friday, November 17, 2023.

Summary: Rustin tells the story of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin (Colman Domingo), who broke barriers everywhere he went, including helping Martin Luther King Jr. and others organize the 1963 March on Washington.

What to Watch For: The film is produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company.

Word on the Street: The outstanding cast includes Audra McDonald, Chris Rock, Glynn Turman, Aml Ameen, CCH Pounder, Jeffrey Wright, Bill Irwin, and Michael Potts.

My Take: Critics who have seen the film at the Toronto International Film Festival have said that Colman Domingo’s performance is not to be missed.

Summary: In Fingernails, Anna (Jessie Buckley) and Ryan (Jeremy Allen White) are in love, and their love has been proven to be confirmed by a controversial new technology. Anna has doubts and begins working at the company that uses the technology to put people together. Soon, her doubts will become more than just thoughts when she becomes attracted to her co-worker Amir (Riz Ahmed).

What to Watch For: The movie is from filmmaker Christos Nikou, whose first film, Apples (2020), was a major award winner on the film festival circuit.

Word on the Street: The cast includes Jeremy Allen White, Annie Murphy, and Luke Wilson.

My Take: I am a big fan of Jessie Buckley and loved her in the TV series Fargo.

All Roads Taste of Salt

Summary: All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt is the decades-long exploration of a woman’s life in Mississippi as she experiences the world through generations of people, places, and the moments that shape us.

What to Watch For: This is the first feature film for director/writer Raven Jackson.

Word on the Street: The film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

My Take: The film is currently at an impressive 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, with over 30 film critic reviews.

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, November 3, 2023.

Summary: Sly is a documentary on the life and work of Sylvester Stallone, who took the idea of the underdog and became a superstar with a career spanning almost 50 years.

What to Watch For: This is the first documentary about Sylvester Stallone, where he gave his permission and gave full access to his life.

Word on the Street: Besides Stallone’s own family, Henry Winkler, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Quentin Tarantino, and Jennifer Flavin are interviewed in the film.

My Take: The film is from Thom Zimny, known for his Emmy-winning work with Bruce Springsteen.
