First on the list is The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. We’re returning to Panem in this Hunger Games prequel to dive into the backstory of President Snow. Rachel Zegler, Viola Davis, Peter Dinklage, and Tom Blyth all star in the film.

For those craving some humor, Next Goal Wins from Oscar-winner Taika Waititi should be on your radar. Starring Michael Fassbinder, this film tells the hilarious tale of the most unsuccessful team in professional soccer history.

Horror fans can look forward to Thanksgiving, a chilling new release from genre master Eli Routh. Just be warned – it promises to leave no leftovers.

Summary: The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is the story of Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth), whose destiny will be to become President of Panem. But before he becomes an all-powerful man, he must rise from poverty and see his chance when asked to be a mentor for the 10th Hunger Games. His elation is dashed when he is assigned to mentor a girl tribute from the 12 District. A young woman named Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler).

What to Watch For: This movie is a prequel to The Hunger Games films, taking place sixty-four years before Katniss Everdeen drew her bow.

Word on the Street: The cast includes Viola Davis, Fionnula Flanagan, Jason Schwartzman, and Peter Dinklage.

My Take: As with The Hunger Games films, this movie is based on a novel by Suzanne Collins.

Next Goal Wins

Next Goal Wins  (2023)

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, November 17, 2023.

Summary: Next Goal Wins is about the American Samoa soccer team, who, in 2011, suffered the worst loss in World Cup history, losing to Australia 31-0. With the 2014 World Cup approaching, the team recruits a down-on-his-luck coach (Michael Fassbinder) to get them back to respectability. It will be a long road back, especially when all the team wants to do is score one goal.

What to Watch For: Written and directed by Academy Award winner Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit).

Word on the Street: The film is based on a true story.

My Take: Will Arnett replaced Armie Hammer during the production. Arnett plays a soccer official who recruits the coach for the job.

Thanksgiving

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, November 17, 2023.

Summary: Thanksgiving takes place when, following a tragic Black Friday incident, a mysterious killer strikes the heart of Plymouth, Massachusetts, the birthplace of Thanksgiving.

What to Watch For: The film’s origin is the mock trailer that filmmaker Eli Roth made for the movie Grindhouse (2007).

Word on the Street: This is Eli Routh and Rick Hoffman’s first collaboration since their groundbreaking 2005 film Hostel.

My Take: I love the tagline: “There Will Be No Leftovers.’

Trolls Band Together

Trolls Band Together   (2023)

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, November 17, 2023.

Summary: In Trolls Band Together, Branch has a secret. He was once part of the boy band ‘BroZone’ with his brothers Floyd, John Dory, Spruce, and Clay. Floyd is kidnapped, and the only way to get him back is to reunite the band, something that Branch never wanted to go back to.

What to Watch For: The voice cast includes Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Zooey Deschanel, Amy Schumer, Kunal Nayyar, Eric Andre, Kenan Thompson, Troye Sivan, Kid Cudi, Camila Cabello, Ron Funches, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and RuPaul.

Word on the Street: Boy band NSYNC reunites in the film with their first song in two decades with their characters Joey Fatone as Ablaze, J.C. Chasez as Hype, Justin Timberlake as Branch, Chris Kirkpatrick as Trickee, and Lance Bass as Boom.

My Take: The best line in the trailer: ‘Branch, we’re out of sync. We’ve gone from boys to men, and now there’s only one direction for us to go: the back streets.’

May December

Summary: In the film May December, it’s been twenty years since their notorious tabloid romance shocked the nation. Now, an actress (Natalie Portman) arrives in town to do research for a film based on the couple’s (Julianne Moore and Charles Melton) relationship. Sometimes, the past is best left behind.

What to Watch For: The film is from director Todd Haynes, known for his movies Far From Heaven (2003), I’m Not There (2008), Carol (2015), and Wonderstuck (2017).

Word on the Street: The film was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

My Take: Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore in a drama. It can’t get better than that.

The Disappearance of Shere Hite

Word on the Street: The film is nominated for three awards at the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards.

My Take: From what I’ve heard, I think the film has a great chance of being part of the Oscars next year.

Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain

Summary: Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain is about three lifelong losers (Ben Marshall, John Higgins, and Martin Herlihy) who set out to find a long-lost treasure, the bust of Marie Antoinette, rumored to be buried in the nearby wilderness. The guys will battle nature, a hawk, a cult, and some meddling park rangers to find the treasure worth millions and could change their lives.

What to Watch For: The trio, known as Please Don’t Destroy, have become breakout hits with their short films on Saturday Night Live.

Word on the Street: The film is produced by Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, 40-Year Old Virgin) and directed by SNL Emmy-nominated Paul Briganti.

My Take: I can’t wait to see Conan O’Brien in this. He plays the trio’s boss and one of the boys’ father in the film.

Maxine's Baby: The Tyler Perry Story

What to Watch For: Gayle King, Killer Mike, Lucky Johnson, T. D. Jakes, Whoopi Goldberg, Ari Emanuel, and Kenya Barris are all interviewed in the film.

Word on the Street: The film is co-directed by Armani Ortiz, known for his work on the TV series Ruthless and Sistas.

My Take: Tyler Perry’s story is impressive about a man who refused to give up following his dream.

What to Watch For: The film has been thrilling film festival audiences, and it won the Jury Prize at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The movie is from filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki, known for his award-winning films The Other Side of Hope (2017) and Le Havre (2011).

My Take: I can’t wait to see this film. Aki Kaurismäki’s movies never disappoint. I loved his films The Man Without a Past and Le Havre.

What to Watch For: The film uses Lady Bird’s audio diaries to tell her story.

Word on the Street: The film won the prestigious Louis Black/Lone Star Award at the 2023 SWSW Film Festival.

My Take: Many film critics have mentioned this film as a possible Academy Award nomination.
