Get ready to go back to the theatre to see another concert, this time starring the one and only Beyoncé in RENAISSANCE: A FiLm by BEYONCÉ. The film promises to be a special event with behind-the-scenes footage from the beginning to the end of a tour that made history.

Our favorite giant lizard returns in Godzilla Minus One, a reboot of the Godzilla storyline. Plus, we have a father out for revenge on Christmas Eve in Silent Night, directed by the master of action films, John Woo.

All that and Eddie Murphy in a Christmas movie called Candy Cane Lane!

RENAISSANCE: A FiLm by BEYONCÉ   (2023)

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, December 1, 2023.

Summary: RENAISSANCE: A FiLm by BEYONCÉ is a documentary that follows the Renaissance World Tour from its inception to its opening in Stockholm, Sweden, to the final concert in Kansas City, Missouri. See the film that shows Beyoncé’s involvement with every aspect of the production as she brings the concert to the big screen.

What to Watch For: There was a lot of speculation that a film would be released for the tour, but it wasn’t revealed until Beyonce herself announced it on stage at the last concert.

Word on the Street: The film will contain not only concert footage but also videos shot for her Renaissance album and behind-the-scenes footage of her recording the album and conceiving the tour.

My Take: I can’t wait to see what 2.3 million fans got to see in those stadiums.

Godzilla Minus One

Godzilla Minus One  (2023)

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, December 1, 2023.

Summary: In Godzilla Minus One, it’s after World War II, and a monster has been created from the nuclear radiation fallout of the bombs used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan will never be the same.

What to Watch For: This is a reboot of the Godzilla tale set in a new time period by Toho, the studio that started it all.

Word on the Street: This is the 33rd Godzilla film to be released by Toho, the original creator of the monster we all love.

My Take: I love Godzilla films, and it will be interesting to see if this film is a new take or if it is close to the original 1954 film.

Silent Night

Silent Night   (2023)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, December 1, 2023.

Summary: Silent Night is about a father who is wounded, and his young son is killed when they are caught in a gang’s crossfire on Christmas Eve. The father (Joel Kinnaman) has lost his voice due to the shooting, and he makes it his life’s mission to avenge his son’s death a year later.

What to Watch for: The film is from legendary action filmmaker John Woo, known for his movies Hard Boiled (1992), Face/Off (1997) and Mission: Impossible II (2000).

Word on the Street: This is the first American film Woo has done in two decades, and the film will feature little to no dialogue.

My Take: I am a big fan of John Woo. His 1989 film The Killer is one of the great action films of the 80s.

Candy Cane Lane

Candy Cane Lane   (2023)

Rating: PG

Release Date: Premieres on Amazon Prime on Friday, December 1, 2023.

Summary: In Candy Cane Lane, Chris (Eddie Murphy) and his family are determined to win the neighborhood’s Christmas decorating contest. Chris meets someone who could help him win, an elf named Pepper (Jillian Bell). However, things don’t go quite as Chris thought they would, as he now has the Twelve Days of Christmas song come to life in his yard.

What to Watch For: The cast includes Tracee Ellis Ross, Chris Redd, Ken Marino, Nick Offerman, and Robin Thede.

Word on the Street: The film is directed by Reginald Hudlin, who directed Murphy in the 1992 film Boomerang.

My Take: Jillian Bell, as the elf, should be a blast to watch.

American Symphony

Release Date: Premieres on Netflix on Wednesday, November 29, 2023.

Summary: American Symphony is a documentary that explores a year in the life of musician Jon Batiste. Jon is on top of the world with eleven Grammy nominations, working as the bandleader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and a beautiful life partner in Suleika. Things turn when the couple finds out that her cancer has returned after a decade-long remission. 

What to Watch For: The film was a huge winner on the film festival circuit, winning the Audience Award at the 2023 Philadelphia Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film is from Matthew Heineman, who was nominated for an Academy Award for this 2016 documentary feature Cartel Land.

My Take: The film has been mentioned in most articles about possible Oscar nominations.

Animal

Animal   (2023)

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, December 1, 2023.

Summary: The film Animal explores the relationship dynamics between a father (Anil Kaproor) and his son (Ranbir Kapoor). It’s a story of family, love, and revenge.

What to Watch For: The film is one of the most anticipated Indian films and has a cast that includes Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, and Rashmika Mandanna.

Word on the Street: Sandeep Reddy Vanga, known for his award-winning films Arjun Reddy (2018) and Kabir Singh (2020) directs the film.

My Take: I am always up for an Indian action film.

The Shift

Summary: The Shift takes place when Kevin Garner (Kristoffer Polaha) has a chance meeting with a mysterious stranger named The Benefactor (Neal McDonough); Kevin refuses his offer of wealth and power and is then sent to an alternate totalitarian reality. Kevin has to survive long enough to figure out how to make it back to the world he knows and the woman that he loves.

What to Watch For: The movie is based on the award-winning short film that writer/director Brock Heasley made in 2017.

Word on the Street: Angel Studios is the home of the TV series The Chosen and released the 2023 film Sound of Freedom,which garnered 230 million at the box office.

My Take: I am a fan of Kristoffer Polaha, who starred in one of my favorite TV series, Life Unexpected.

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, December 1, 2023.

Summary: Eileen is about a twenty-four-year-old woman named Eileen (Thomasin McKenzie), who works at a juvenile detention center while trying to take care of her alcoholic dad (Shea Whigham) at night. Her world improves when a new doctor named Rebecca (Anne Hathaway) starts working at the prison and befriends her. Rebecca is everything Eileen aspires to be: brilliant, beautiful, and sure of who she is. You know what they say: Not everything is what it seems on the surface.

What to Watch For: The film is directed by William Oldroyd, whose 2018 film Lady Macbeth was nominated for two BAFTA Awards.

Word on the Street: The film is based on the award-winning book of the same name by Ottessa Moshfegh.

My Take: The film is currently at an outstanding 89 percent on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 80 film critic reviews.

Family Switch

Release Date: Premieres on Netflix on Thursday, November 30, 2023.

Summary: Family Switch takes place when, after a chance meeting with an astrological reader, the whole family wakes up to discover that they have switched bodies: the kids are now in their parents’ bodies and vice versa. Now can they survive school, work, and the baby having switched with the family dog?

What to Watch For: The cast includes Jennifer Garner and Ed Helms as the parents and Emma Myers and Brady Noon as the two teenagers.

Word on the Street: The film is directed by McG, known for his movies Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003), Terminator Salvation (2009), and 3 Days to Kill (2014).

My Take: I’ll watch any movie that Jennifer Garner is in.
