Origin   (2023)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, January 19, 2024.

Summary: In Origin, Isabel (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author who is asked to write about the murder of Trayvon Martin. At first, she doesn’t want to write the piece; however, with the support of her husband Brett (Jon Bernthal), she decides to write not about the death but about what made it possible and why. Isabel is about to go on a journey that will be the most challenging year of her life but one of great discovery.

What to Watch For: The movie is from Ava DuVernay, the filmmaker known for her award-winning films Selma (2015) and 13th (2017). DuVernay has done the impossible and adapted the best-selling non-fiction book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson into a narrative film.

Word on the Street: The film won two awards at the 2023 Virginia Film Festival, including the Narrative Feature Audience Award.

My Take: DuVernay, after encountering difficulties in making the film, financed it through grants, including one from the Ford Foundation.

The Zone of Interest   (2023)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, January 19, 2024.

What to Watch For: The film is the official submission of the United Kingdom for the Best International Feature Film category for the 2024 Academy Awards.

Word on the Street: Director Jonathan Glazer used five fixed cameras in the house for multiple scenes so that the actors didn’t know which camera was on them, letting them stay immersed in the scene.

My Take: The film won four awards at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, including the Grand Prize of the Festival.

They agree to go on a road trip where they will exchange candid confessions about their past relationships on the off chance that this might be something.

What to Watch For: Peter Hutchings, who also directed The Hating Game in 2021 featuring Lucy Hale, directs the film.

Word on the Street: Nat Wolff got his start in the TV series The Naked Brothers Band.

My Take: We all know Lucy Hale from her role as Aria on Pretty Little Liars. But I remember her from the little-seen TV series Bionic Woman as Becca Sommers.
