Miller’s Girl   (2024)

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, January 26, 2024.

Summary: In Miller’s Girl, Cairo (Jenna Ortega) is a high school student who excels at everything she sets her mind to. Her English teacher, Jonathan (Martin Freeman), sees talent in Cairo and gives her extra attention. When he realizes things may have gone too far, he rejects her. And now Cairo is out for revenge.

What to Watch For: This is writer/director Jade Halley Bartlett’s debut film.

Word on the Street: The film was on the famous Black List in 2016 and was picked up by Seth Rogen’s company, Point Grey Pictures.

My Take: I know that Jade Hailey Bartlett was once attached to write for Marvel, including a possible Doctor Strange script.

Beautiful Wedding   (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date: Only in theatres on Wednesday, January 24, and Thursday, January 25, 2024.

Summary: Beautiful Wedding starts when Abby (Virginia Gardner) and Travis (Dylan Sprouse) are in Vegas, and they wake up confused, hungover, and married. So what’s next for our newlyweds who barely know each other? How about a honeymoon in Mexico with friends and family?

What to Watch For: The is a sequel to last year’s hit film Beautiful Disaster.

Word on the Street: Most of the cast from the first film are reprising their roles, including Rob Estes, Libe Barer, and Austin North.

My Take: The film is only playing for two nights in theaters through Fathom releasing.

The Underdoggs   (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date: Premieres on Amazon Prime on Friday, January 26, 2024.

Summary: The Underdoggs is about Jaycen ‘Two Js’ Jennings (Snoop Dogg), who used to be on top of the world as a football player. However, Jennings has hit rock bottom and, after causing an accident, is sentenced to do community service coaching a pee-wee football team that is as unruly as he is.

What to Watch For: In real life, Snoop Dogg has been a tremendous supporter of youth football in Southern California, including coaching teams. He is the founder of the Snoop Youth Football League for at-risk youths.

Word on the Street: The film was pitched to the studios by Snoop Dogg and his business partner Constance Schwartz-Morini after working together with the Youth League for the past fifteen years.

My Take: The cast includes Tika Sumpter, Andrew Schulz, Mike Epps, and George Lopez.

Sometimes I Think About Dying   (2023)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, January 26, 2024.

Summary: In Sometimes I Think About Dying, Fran (Daisy Ridley) is good at her office job but is incredibly socially awkward. Fran spends most of her time alone, which gives her a way to daydream about how she could die. Fran’s world changes when Robert (Dave Merheje) starts working at her office, and he takes a liking to her. Now, the only thing standing in the way of her happiness is Fran herself.

What to Watch For: The film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize when it premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film is based on a play and a short film by one of the movie’s writers, Stefanie Abel Horowitz.

My Take: I loved Rachel Lambert’s 2016 award-winning film In the Radiant City.

Badland Hunters   (2024)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: Premiers on Netflix on Friday, January 26, 2023.

Summary: Badland Hunters takes place after a massive earthquake has transformed Seoul into an apocalyptic wasteland, where civilization has collapsed, and it’s everyone for themselves.

What to Watch For: This is a sequel to the 2023 South Korean film Concrete Utopia.

Word on the Street: This is actor Heo Myeong Haeng’s (The Good the Bad The Weird (2008), Oldboy (2003)) directorial debut.

My Take: I love that Ahn Ji-hye, who plays a special forces soldier, does all her own stunts in the film.

American Star   (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, January 26, 2024.

Summary: American Star is about Wilson (Ian McShane), an assassin who takes one last job before retirement. He is commissioned to kill a man on a tropical island. The target is delayed, and instead of going home, Wilson decides to stay on the island and becomes involved with the people there. Now, the target has arrived, and Wilson is forced to choose between his job and his newfound friendships.

What to Watch For: The film is directed by Gonzalo López-Gallego. He’s best known for his award-winning films Open Grave (2013) and El rey de la montana (2007).

Word on the Street: The film’s star, Ian McShane, is also one of its producers.

My Take: Seeing McShane out of the John Wick franchise for a change will be fun.

Pictures of Ghosts  (2023)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, January 26, 2024.

Summary: In the documentary Pictures of Ghosts, filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho revisits the downtown of the Brazilian city of Recife, where he explores the now vacant movie palaces that made such an essential part of Brazilian life.

What to Watch For: The film has been a big hit on the film festival circuit, having played at Cannes, the New York Film Festival, and the Toronto International Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film was selected as the Brazilian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards.

My Take: I know the director worked on the film for over seven years, doing research with his own old videos on VHS and Beta-cam.
