‘Enola Holmes’ 3: Release Date Speculation, Cast, News, and More

Following the success of Enola Holmes and its 2022 sequel, fans have been left wondering if there will be a third film. While Netflix hasn’t made any official confirmation yet of Enola Holmes 3, reports are saying that a script has been in the works since 2022. And, in November 2023, an industry production newsletter included the project noting that it was in active development. 

So, what’s known so far about Enola Holmes 3. We’ve got the details below. Spoilers ahead for the previous films.

Will There Be An Enola Holmes 3?

Netflix has yet to make an official announcement for Enola Holmes 3. However, as of November 2022, a script for the third installment was said to be in its early phases.

Scott Stuber, who leads Netflix Film, praised actress Millie Bobby Brown, who plays the titular character.

“You know, she’s such a great homegrown star for us. I mean, obviously, Stranger Things is huge for us in that, and watching her grow as an actress. We have a film called Damsel with her in the spring, which I’m really excited about, from Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Then, getting that character right. The Holmes IP is weirdly elastic. Obviously, Warner Bros. did an incredible job with Downey and Jude Law, so this idea that we can extend that IP with her is exciting. So, we’re working once again on a screenplay to try to get that. But yes, aspiration. I’d like to do another one,” said Stuber.

What Would the Storyline of Enola Holmes 3 Be?

Should Netflix give the go-ahead on Enola Holmes 3, the new installment would likely be based on the third Enola Holmes book, “The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets.” Even if there were major changes made in Enola Holmes 2, the stories of the films have followed the order of the books.

In the book, Enola avoids being brought back to finishing school to help locate Dr. John Watson. The titular character is on the run from Sherlock, who wants to bring her to the school, and she makes use of disguises to evade him. However, Enola is drawn out of hiding when Dr. Watson goes missing, and a mysterious bouquet, which all symbolizes death, is brought to his home.

Since Watson was introduced at the end of Enola Holmes 2, it seems likely that Enola Holmes 3 would follow this book. However, given that the second movie was based on real-life events, there’s still a chance that Enola Holmes 3 would take another direction.

What Happened in Enola Holmes 2?

In Enola Holmes 2, the titular sleuth opens her detective practice, eventually reuniting with Sherlock when they learn that their cases are connected. The person connecting the siblings’ two cases is Moriarty herself. While Sherlock and Enola bring her to justice, she inevitably makes her escape.

As said earlier, Enola Holmes 2 did not follow Nancy Springer’s second book. Instead, the sequel was inspired by real events like the matchgirls’ strike of 1888. Dozens of women and girls staged a walkout at a factory in east London at the time.

The synopsis for Enola Holmes 2 reads:

“In Enola Holmes 2, fresh off the triumph of solving her first case, Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) follows in the footsteps of her famous brother, Sherlock (Henry Cavill), and opens her agency – only to find that life as a female detective-for-hire isn’t as easy as it seems. Resigned to accept the cold realities of adulthood, she is about to close shop when a penniless matchstick girl offers Enola her first official job: to find her missing sister. But this case proves to be far more puzzling than expected, as Enola is thrown into a dangerous new world – from London’s sinister factories and colorful music halls to the highest echelons of society and 221B Baker Street itself. As the sparks of a deadly conspiracy ignite, Enola must call upon the help of friends – and Sherlock himself – to unravel her mystery. The game, it seems, has found its feet again.”

Who Might Be in the Cast of Enola Holmes 3?

If Enola Holmes 3 is confirmed, Millie Bobby Brown is expected to reprise her role as the titular sleuth. The Stranger Things star previously told Screenrant in 2022 that she would love to return for a third movie.

“I would love to be a part of another one. I would love to see her do more cases. Be put under pressure, be put in crazy situations, make her feel vulnerable again,” Brown confesses. “I absolutely love seeing her back at work.”

The same could be said for Henry Cavill, who will likely reprise his role as Sherlock Holmes. Also likely returning is Himesh Patel, who made his introduction at the end of Enola Holmes 2 as their version of Dr. John Watson.

Helena Bonham Carter, who played Eudoria Holmes, may also return in case there’s Enola Holmes 3. There may also be a chance that Sam Claflin may come back this time to play the eldest Holmes sibling Mycroft. Claflin could not reprise his role in Enola Holmes 2 due to scheduling conflicts. However, director Harry Bradbeer has been interested in bringing Claflin back.

Another who will likely come back for a possible Enola Holmes 3 is Sharon Duncan-Brewster, playing the infamous Moriarty. Louis Partridge may also return as Lord Tewkesbury, Susan Wokoma as Edith, and Adeel Akhtar as Inspector Lestrade.

Fans can certainly expect new faces to be introduced along with the new case in Enola Holmes 3.

Enola Holmes 3 Release Date Speculation

Since Netflix has yet to make an official confirmation on the project (and filming hasn’t begun), it’s unclear when Enola Holmes 3 might release. Should Enola Holmes 3 be confirmed, then production may likely take place after Stranger Things 5 wraps filming. 

For comparison, Enola Holmes 2 was announced in April 2021 and released in November 2022. There is a chance Enola Holmes 3 could follow the same time frame. Naturally, as it is a Netflix production, the third movie will be viewed on the streaming giant.

As for a possible Sherlock Holmes movie starring Henry Cavill? There has been speculation on whether that might happen… Especially after Watson was introduced at the end of Enola Holmes 2. However, Cavill has downplayed the possibility.

“This universe is very much Enola’s. So she’ll always be involved,” Cavill told The Wrap. “I think it’s important to make that connection between the two characters. In all the literature and all the other mediums, he doesn’t have an Enola. He has a Watson. But that’s very different from having an Enola… There’s this emotionality with the connection, which is otherwise unique to the Enola universe.”
