A Look at the 11 New Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘Lisa Frankenstein,’ ‘Suncoast,’ and More!

From several romantic comedies to a few Oscar-nominated releases, there are 11 new movies coming out this week! And with that many new movies, there’s truly something for every movie fan (as well as some great date night movies as we near Valentine’s Day).

First up, we have a new flick written by Diablo Cody titled Lisa Frankenstein. The film is a quirky tale of romance reanimated, where love transcends the grave. Meanwhile, fresh from her acclaimed performance in The Last of Us, Nico Parker captivates us once more in the Hulu drama Suncoast.

Additionally, we have a couple of films releasing that are nominated for Oscars, including The Teachers’ Lounge, which tells the story of an idealistic teacher who tries to figure out if a student accused of stealing is guilty. Also nominated is Perfect Days, Wim Wender’s film about a man who finds solace in cleaning bathrooms in Tokyo.

Prepare for a twist of fate in the delightful rom-com Upgraded, where Camila Mendes finds love where least expected, wrapped in a case of mistaken identity. Across the border from France, we have The Taste of Things, featuring the stellar Benoît Magimel and Juliette Binoche in a story that will tantalize the senses.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: February 5, 2024, – February 11, 2024

Lisa Frankenstein   (2024)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, February 9, 2024. 

Summary: Lisa Frankenstein is about an ordinary teen named Lisa (Kathryn Newton) who has a crush on a boy. The only problem is that he is dead and buried. After a set of horrific circumstances brings him (Cole Sprouse) back to life, Lisa has the boyfriend she has always wanted, even if he is still sort of dead.

What to Watch For: Diablo Cody, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Juno, wrote the film.

Word on the Street: Kathryn Newton is best known for her role as Cassie Lang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and as Abigail Carlson on the TV series Big Little Lies.

My Take: This is the directorial feature debut of Zelda Williams, the daughter of the late Robin Williams.

Suncoast   (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date: Premieres on Hulu on Friday, February 9, 2024.

Summary: In Suncoast, Doris (Nico Parker) is a high school student whose brother Max’s illness has taken a turn for the worse, and he has moved into a hospice where their mother, Kristine (Laura Linney). Doris begins to make friends, especially since her mother is never home, so Doris’s house becomes a place to hang out for parties and sleepovers. At some point, things are going to get messy.

What to Watch For: Nico Parker won the Breakthrough Performance at the Sundance Film Festival. 

Word on the Street: The film is based on the life experiences of the filmmaker Laura Chinn.

My Take: One of my favorite actors, Woody Harrelson, plays a right-to-die activist who becomes Doris’s friend.

The Teachers’ Lounge   (2023)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, February 9, 2024.

Summary: The Teachers’ Lounge is about Carla (Leonie Benesch), a well-liked teacher whose students love being in her class. When one of her students is suspected of theft, Carla tries to find out the truth. However, sometimes times, the truth is best left alone.

What to Watch For: The film is nominated for an Oscar in the Best International Feature Film category.

Word on the Street: The film won four awards at the 2023 German Film Awards, including Outstanding Feature Film.

My Take: Leonie Benesch burst on the film scene in the role of Eva in the 2009 Oscar-nominated film The White Ribbon.

Upgraded   (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date: Premiers on Prime Video on Friday, February 9, 2024.

Summary: Upgraded is about Ana (Camila Mendes), an art intern who works for an over-controlling, perfectionist boss, Claire (Marisa Tomei). Somehow, Ana has been picked to fly to London to accompany Claire. Ana meets the man of her dreams, William (Archie Renaux). The only problem is that Ana lets William think she is her company’s boss.

What to Watch For: Camila Mendes is best known for her role as Veronica in the CW teen drama series Riverdale.

Word on the Street: This is the second film directed by Carlson Young, who started her career as an actor, including Scream: The TV Series.

My Take: Besides Oscar winner Marisa Tomei, the film also has another Oscar nominee in the cast, Lena Olin (Enemies, A Love Story (1990)). 

The Taste of Things   (2023)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, February 9, 2024.

Summary: The Taste of Things is the story of Eugenie (Juliette Binoche), an esteemed cook, and Dodin (Benoît Magimel), her gourmet benefactor with whom she has been working for over the past 20 years. As they work together, their bond becomes one that each other can’t ignore, but Eugenie is reluctant to commit to Dodin, so he begins cooking for her.

What to Watch For: The film is France’s official submission for the ‘Best International Feature Film’ category of the 96th Academy Awards.

Word on the Street: Benoît Magimel and Juliette Binoche were married in real life from 1998 to 2003.

My Take: Dodin is loosely based on a real French gourmet from the early 1800s.

Perfect Days   (2023)

Rating: PG

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, February 9, 2024.

Summary: In Perfect Days, Hirayama (Koji Yakusho) is a toilet cleaner for a company in Tokyo. He takes pride in his work, puts up with his annoying, talkative co-worker, and has a passion for music, books, and trees. Hirayama is about to revisit a past he had hoped to forget because of a series of unexpected encounters. 

What to Watch For: The film is directed by Wim Wenders, known for his Oscar-nominated documentaries Buena Vista Social Club (1999), Pina Bausch (2011), and The Salt of the Earth (2014).

Word on the Street: The film has been nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards.

My Take: Winders directed two of my favorite narrative films: Wings of Desire (1987) and Paris, Texas (1984).

Popular Theory   (2023)

Rating: PG

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, February 9, 2024.

Summary: Popular Theory is about Erwin (Sophia Reid-Gantzert), a genius so smart that she is the youngest student in her high school. Her parents (Cheryl Hines and Marc Evan Jackson) want Erwin to be more of a normal kid, but she is determined to win the upcoming science fair. She teams up with a fellow brilliant student, Winston (Lincoln Lambert), and together, their science project may alter high school forever.

What to Watch For: The film won the Best Feature Film at the 2023 Giffoni Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Sophia Reid-Gantzert is best known for her role as Karen Brewer in The Baby-Sitter Club.

My Take: Lincoln Lambert had a role in one of my favorite films of 2022, Jordan Peele’s Nope. 

Float   (2023)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, February 9, 2024.

Summary: In Float, Waverly (Andrea Bang) is taking some much-deserved time off to visit her aunt in a small Canadian town. After she nearly drowns at a lake party due to being unable to swim, her rescuer, Blake (Robbie Amell), offers to teach her to swim. They find themselves falling in love, but Blake’s past and Waverly’s plans after the summer visit could keep them apart once summer ends.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the viral internet fiction story by Kate Merchant, which accumulated over 25.5 million reads on the Wattpad platform.

Word on the Street: Andrea Bang is known for her starring role as Janet in the popular TV series Kim’s Convenience.

My Take: Most fans know Robbie Amell for his roles in the TV series The Flash and The Tomorrow People, but I know him for his role as Adam Connor in the TV series Revenge.

Skin Deep   (2022)

Rating: N/A

Release Date:  In select theatres on Friday, February 9, 2024.

Summary: Skin Deep is about Leyla (Mala Emde) and Tristan (Jonas Dassler), who seem like a happy couple, but looks can be deceiving. That’s why they have traveled to a mysterious, remote island where a game of identities begins, and life as the couple knew it has changed.

What to Watch For: The film was a tremendous hit on the European film festival circuit, winning the Ocana Award at the 2022 Seville European Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film’s director, Alex Schadd, won the 2016 Student Academy Awards for Foreign Film.

My Take: I heard about this film after it played at the Fantasia Film Festival.

The Monk and the Gun   (2023)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, February 9, 2024.

Summary: The Monk and the Gun occurs when an American named Ronald (Harry Einhorn) has been sent to Bhutan to track down a priceless Civil War rifle. Ronald has arrived just as the country is transitioning from a monarchy to a democracy and is rife with change. It turns out that the rifle Ronald is looking for is in the possession of a monk, who has been sent on his mission, one that Ronald will get to know very well.

What to Watch For: The film is from Pawo Choyning Dorji, who brought us the award-winning 2019 film A Yak in the Classroom.

Word on the Street: The film won the Audience Award at the 2023 Vancouver International Film Festival.

My Take: I loved A Yak in the Classroom and can’t wait to see this film.

Drift   (2023)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: in select theatres on Friday, February 9, 2024.

Summary: In Drift, Jacqueline (Cynthia Erivo) is alone on a Greek island, having escaped her war-torn country of Liberia. She meets an American, Callie (Alia Shawkat), who works as a tour guide on the island, and they strike up a friendship. Can this friendship become something more when Jacqueline is haunted by her past? Only time will tell.

What to Watch For: Cynthia Erivo is best known for her two Academy Award nominations for the 2019 film Harriet.

Word on the Street: Alia Shawkat was nominated for Best Supporting Performance at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards.

My Take: Everyone knows Alia Shawkat from Arrested Development. But I will always know her as Hannah, Grace’s (Mae Whitman) best friend in the TV series State of Grace.
