New Movies Coming Out: Dune: Part 2

It’s finally here, one of the biggest movies of the year is coming out this week! 

After several delays due to the 2023 writer’s and actors’ strikes, we finally get to see one of the most anticipated films of 2024, the continuing saga of Paul Atreides in Dune: Part Two, starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya.

Continuing the sci-fi films for the week, we have a space drama, Spaceman, that stars Adam Sandler and Carey Mulligan. There’s also an action film about people with superpowers in the sequel Code 8 Part II, starring Robbie and Stephan Amell.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: February 26, 2024, – March 3, 2024

Dune Part 2

Dune: Part Two   (2024)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, March 1, 2024. 

Summary: In the continuing story of Dune: Part Two, Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) has found love in Chani (Zendaya) and has the Fremen on his side in getting revenge against the conspirators who murdered his family. Paul may have to choose between love and the universe’s fate as he endeavors to prevent a horrible future only he can foresee.

What to Watch For: Austin Butler, hot off his Oscar nomination for Elvis (2022), beat out Tye Sheridan, Harry Styles, Bill Skarsgård, and Barry Keoghan for the role of Feyd-Rautha in the film.

Word on the Street: AMC’s website crashed when tickets first went on sale.

My Take: I am a huge fan of the book. And I thought  Dune (2021) did a great job tackling a book known for its complicated plot.

Spaceman   (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date: Premieres on Netflix on Friday, March 1, 2024.

Summary:  Spaceman is the story of Jakub Procházka (Adam Sandler), the first astronaut from Czechoslovakia. He has been isolated in space for six months on a mission to reach a mysterious cluster of space dust. He desperately misses his wife (Carey Mulligan) and begins obsessing over his marriage when he is given an opportunity to see her again. Is this real or all in his mind?

What to Watch For: The film is from director Johan Renck, known for his Emmy-winning Limited TV Series Chernobyl.

Word on the Street: The film is based on the 2017 book Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfar.

My Take: I wish Adam Sandler would do more dramatic roles like this one. His last one of note was his award-winning performance as gambler Howard Ratner in the 2019 film Uncut Gems.

Outlaw Posse

Outlaw Posse   (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, March 1, 2024. 

Summary: Outlaw Posse is about Chief (Mario Van Peebles), who has returned from years of hiding in Mexico to gather a group of outcasts to reclaim stolen gold from the Civil War. It’s a harsh and unfair world, but Chief plans on righting a few wrongs.

What to Watch For: The cast includes D.C. Young Fly, Mandela Van Peebles, Neal McDonough, Amber Reign Smith, M. Emmet Walsh, John Carroll Lynch, William Mapother, Edward James Olmos, Cedric the Entertainer, and Whoopi Goldberg.

Word on the Street: The film is directed and written by Mario Van Peebles, known for his movies New Jack City (1991), Panther (1995), and Baadasssss! (2003).

My Take: I liked Van Peebles’s other western, the 1993 film Posse, so I will be seeing this film.

Code 8 Part II

Code 8 Part II   (2024)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: Premieres on Netflix on Wednesday, February 28, 2024. 

Summary: Code 8 Part II takes place in the near future, where four percent of the population has superpowers and is hunted because of it. After witnessing the murder of her brother, a teenager (Sirena Gulamagaus) with abnormal abilities seeks the help of an ex-con (Robbie Amell) and his former partner-in-crime (Stephen Amell) to get revenge on the cops who killed him.

What to Watch For: This is the sequel to the 2019 film Code 8, which also starred Robbie and Stephen Amell.

Word on the Street: The film is directed by Jeff Chan, who also directed the first Code 8 film.

My Take: Alex Mallari Jr., who plays the lead bad guy in the film, is best known for his role as PI Gabriel Cordova on the Netflix TV series Ginny & Georgia.

Megamind vs The Doom Syndicate

Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate   (2024)

Rating: TV-G

Release Date: Premieres on Peacock on Friday, March 1, 2024. 

Summary:  In Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate, Megamind (voiced by Keith Ferguson) was used to be a villain but now enjoys being a ‘good guy.’ The problem is that his former team of villains, The Doom Syndicate, has returned and plans to launch Metro City to the Moon. Megamind must play like he is a fellow villain until he can gather his friends to stop the Syndicate. Will Megamind be too late, or will he even return to his evil ways?

What to Watch For: While not the voice of Megamind in the previous films, Keith Ferguson was the voice of Megamind in the tie-in video games as well as a series of commercials for McDonalds. 

Word on the Street: The voice cast includes Scott Adsit, Josh Brener, Tony Hale, Adam Lambert, Jeanine Mason, Laura Post, and Chris Sullivan.

My Take: The film’s director is best known as a writer and director of the hilarious animated TV series Celebrity Deathmatch.

Problemista

Problemista   (2023)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, March 1, 2024.

Summary: Problemista is about Alejandro (Julio Torres), a young man from El Salvador who dreams of being a toy designer. His work visa is about to run out. And he makes a deal with the devil, an erratic, demanding art critic (Tilda Swinton) who is on a mission to retrieve her dead partner’s art and mount a show. It’s a job that Alejandro may not survive.

What to Watch For: The film was a massive hit at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival and was nominated for the Audience Award.

Word on the Street: The film is written and directed by the star of the film, Julio Torres, a four-time Emmy nominated writer for Saturday Night Live.

My Take: One of my favorite all-time actors, Isabella Rossellini, is the film’s narrator.

Asleep in My Palm

Asleep in My Palm   (2023)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, March 1, 2024.

Summary: In Asleep in My Palm a father (Tim Blake Nelson) and his daughter (Chloe Kerwin) are living in a storage shed, off the grid in rural Ohio, where they hustle to stay alive each day. The problem is the father is hiding from his violent past. And his daughter is no longer a little girl who can accept everything her father tells her.

What to Watch For: The film has come off a successful film festival run. It won awards at both the Woodstock Film Festival and the Rome International Film Festival.

Word on the Street:  Tim Nelson, the son of Tim Blake Nelson (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018), O Brother, Where Art Thou? (200)), wrote and directed the film.

My Take: Chloe Kerwin is best known for her role as Trudy in the TV series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
