New Movies Coming Out This Week: Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

Are you heading to the movies this week? Nine new movies are coming out, offering a little something for everyone—including the long-delayed Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire!

The Ghostbusters gang is back in action in the new film, and this time, it’s in New York City when an evil force threatens to freeze the entire city. Next up, there’s Sydney Sweeney, who plays a nun who learns that her new convent has some very dark secrets in Immaculate.

We also get an animated docudrama about a mystery in They Shot the Piano Player, and Russel Crowe as a detective trying to solve a case before a man dies on death row in Sleeping Dogs.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: March 18, 2024 – March 24, 2024

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

Release Date: In theaters nationwide on Friday, March 22, 2024.

Summary: In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all began, the iconic New York City firehouse, to team up with some of the original Ghostbusters. Their mission is to stop an evil force unleashed by an ancient artifact that threatens to turn the world into a second Ice Age.

What to Watch For: Cast members from the original film that will be in this film include Annie Potts, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson.

Word on the Street: This is the first movie in the Ghostbusters franchise that the late Ivan Reitman won’t be involved in.

My Take: The film was supposed to be released at Christmas but was delayed by the actor and writer’s strikes.

Immaculate

Immaculate   (2024)

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, March 22, 2024.

Summary: Immaculate is about Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney), a woman who believes God has a plan for her. Cecilia is warmly welcomed to her new convent with open arms. But it becomes clear to Cecilia that the convent is not what it appears to be, harboring dark and horrifying secrets.

What to Watch For: Sydney Sweeney auditioned for this film in 2014, but the project never got beyond the casting phase. Sweeney, now a producer, reached out to the screenwriter, then bought the script, got the film financed, and finally sold the movie to Neon.

Word on the Street: Filmmaker Michael Mohan directed Sweeney in the 2021 film The Voyeurs.

My Take: The film is made its premiere at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival.

They Shot the Piano Player

Summary: The animated docudrama They Shot the Piano Player is about Jess (voiced by Jeff Goldblum), a music journalist, who travels to Brazil to uncover the truth about a young samba-jazz pianist who disappeared without a trace in 1976 after a promising start of his music career.

What to Watch For: The film was nominated for a 2024 Goya Award for Best Animated Film.

Word on the Street: Many critics thought the film should have been nominated for Best Animated Feature Film for this year’s Academy Awards.

My Take: I am a big jazz fan and can’t wait to see this movie.

Sleeping Dogs

Sleeping Dogs   (2024)

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, March 22, 2024.

Summary: In Sleeping Dogs, Roy Freeman (Russell Crowe) is an ex-homicide detective whose memory is going bad. He revisits an old case when a man’s life is in the balance on death row. Freeman must investigate a decades-old crime that he can’t remember even working on. Sometimes, it’s best to let sleeping dogs lie.

What to Watch For: Before Russel Crowe got the job, Mel Gibson and Nicolas Cage were both considered for the role of Roy.

Word on the Street: This is Adam Cooper’s directorial debut. He wrote the screenplays for Allegiant (2016), Assassin’s Creed (2016), and Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014).

My Take: Karen Gillan, one of my favorite actors from the Doctor Who TV series, is in the film.

Shirley

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, March 22, 2024.

Summary: The drama Shirley tells the story of Shirley Chisholm (Regina King), who made history as the first Black woman elected to Congress and to run for President in the 1972 election.

What to Watch For: The cast includes Lance Reddick, Terrence Howard, Lucas Hedges, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Christina Jackson, Andre Holland, and Dorian Missick.

Word on the Street: John Ridley, who won an Academy Award for his screenplay for the 2013 film 12 Years a Slave, wrote and directed the film.

My Take: This is the last film appearance of the late Lance Reddick, who died in 2023.

Femme

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, March 22, 2024.

Summary: Femme is about Jules (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett), who was the target of a horrible homophobic attack that destroyed his life and career. Now, he encounters Preston (George Mackay) in a gay sauna and realizes that the man is one of his attackers. Jules wants revenge.

What to Watch For: The film was nominated for two awards at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film was first made into an award-winning short. The film was recast when the filmmakers made a feature film out of the storyline.

My Take: I read that the film received the longest-standing ovation at this year’s Berlin Film Festival.

Limbo

Summary: In Limbo, Travis Hurley (Simon Baker) is a detective who is determined to find out who killed an Aboriginal girl in the outback 20 years ago. Travis comes to a small town to find answers and only finds more questions.

What to Watch For: Simon Baker is best known for his Emmy-nominated role as Patrick Jane on the TV series The Mentalist.

Word on the Street: Ivan Sen is an award-winning filmmaker of the films Goldstone (2017) and Beneath Clouds (2002).

My Take: I’ll never forget Simon Baker’s performance in the 1997 film L.A. Confidential.

Riddle of Fire

Riddle of Fire   (2023)

Summary: Riddle of Fire starts when their mother asks three children to run an errand to the grocery store. Their journey will be filled with kidnappings, battles with a witch, fairies and a showdown with a huntsman.

What to Watch For: The film was a massive hit on the film festival circuit and closed out the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The movie was shot in 16mm film.

My Take: The film was a Golden Camera nominee at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

Summary: In the documentary You Can Call Me Bill, we travel along with William Shatner on his personal journey exploring a career that has made him a Sci-Fi icon, from his role as the nervous flyer seeing gremlins on The Twilight Zone to Captain Kirk on the TV series Star Trek.

What to Watch For: The film was nominated for the Audience Award at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film is from Alexandre Ol Philippe, the award-winning director of 78/52 (2017), The Taking (2021), and Lynch/Oz (2022).

My Take: Legion M, the world’s first fan-owned entertainment company, is distributing the film.
