A Look at the 10 New Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘The Fall Guy,’ ‘Tarot,’ and More!

Planning a trip to the theater this week? Curious about the new movies coming out? Get ready because we have some fantastic films coming out this week!

First up is The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling as Colt, an out-of-work stuntman who must find the missing lead actor. Emily Blunt also stars as the director and former lover of Colt, whose movie is in trouble if the disappeared actor doesn’t turn up. 

In addition, we have a horror movie called Tarot, in which the famous fortune-telling cards turn deadly. Unfrosted, a film from Jerry Seinfeld about the creation of the iconic breakfast food Pop Tarts. And Anne Hathaway in a romance in which a 40-year-old woman starts a relationship with a 24-year-old singer from a famous boy band in The Idea of You.

The Fall Guy

The Fall Guy   (2024) 

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, May 3, 2024. 

Summary: In The Fall Guy, Colt (Ryan Gosling), a former stuntman, comes out of retirement after discovering his ex (Emily Blunt) is directing a big-budget movie. It’s not a joyful reunion, but Colt is needed when the enormous star of the film has gone missing, and he must find him before the picture is shut down.

What to Watch For: Ryan Gosling performed some of the stunts in the film himself, including one at the beginning of the movie. 

Word on the Street: Producer Kelly McCormick has said the movie is a sort of a love letter to the stunt community.

My Take: I love this cast! Besides Gosling and Blunt, the film has Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Tom Ryder, the star who goes missing. Stephanie Hsu plays Tom Ryder’s assistant, Winston Duke plays Colt’s best friend, Hannah Waddingham plays the film’s producer, and Teresa Palmer plays Tom Ryder’s girlfriend. 

Tarot

Tarot   (2024)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, May 3, 2024.

Summary: Tarot takes place when a group of friends gather to have some fun and do readings for each other. They recklessly violate the sacred rules of Tarot and unleash an unspeakable evil trapped within the cards. One by one, they are being hunted down by the characters depicted on the cards. It’s a race against fate and death.

What to Watch For: This is co-director Spenser Cohen’s first feature film at the helm. He is best known for writing the screenplays for Extinction (2018), Moonfall (2022) and The Expendables 4 (2023).

Word on the Street: The cast includes Humberly González, Adain Bradley, Jacob Batalon, Spenser Cohen, Les Morgenstein, Elysa Dutton, Anna Halberg, Wolfgang Novogratz, Avantika, and Alana Boden.

My Take: The trailer for Tarot has been viewed over nine million times on YouTube.

Unfrosted

Unfrosted   (2024)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, May 3, 2024.

Summary: In Unfrosted, its 1963 and bitter rivals in Battle Creek, Michigan, Kellogg’s and Post are rushing to create a breakfast cake that could change how the world eats breakfast. 

What to Watch For: The film is co-written and directed by comedy legend Jerry Seinfeld.

Word on the Street: While the film is loosely based on actual events, the origin of the screenplay comes from a series of jokes that Seinfeld did in his standup. 

My Take: Besides Jerry Seinfeld, the outstanding cast includes Mikey Day, Kyle Mooney, Jim Gaffigan, Rachael Harris, Christian Slater, Hugh Grant, Patrick Warburton, Amy Schumer, Max Greenfield, Melissa McCarthy, Earthquake, Jack McBrayer, Cedric the Entertainer.

I Saw the TV Glow

I Saw the TV Glow   (2024)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, May 3, 2024.

Summary: I Saw the TV Glow is about two teenagers (Justice Smith and Brighter Lundy-Paine) who bond over a TV show called The Pink Opaque. As their bond grows, things start getting weird.

What to Watch For: The film’s cast includes some stars from 90s TV shows, including Michael C. Maronna and Danny Tamberelli, known for their Nickelodeon TV series The Adventures of Pete & Pete.

Word on the Street: Writer/director Jane Schoenburn commissioned sixteen original songs from some of her favorite bands for the soundtrack.

My Take: The movie is one of the featured films of the 2024 Atlanta Film Festival.

The Idea of You

The Idea of You   (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date: Premiering on Amazon Prime on Thursday, May 2, 2024. 

Summary: The Idea of You takes place after a chance encounter at the Coachella Music Festival, Solène (Anne Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mom, begins an unexpected romance with 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the lead singer of August Moon, the hottest boy band on the planet. It’s not long before Solène discovers that life in the spotlight might be more than she bargained for.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the novel of the same name by Robinne Lee.

Word on the Street: The movie premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival and was nominated for the Audience Award.

My Take: Many fans of the novel feel it was inspired by the life of Harry Styles.

Wildcat

Wildcat   (2023)

Rating: R

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, May 3, 2024.

Summary: In Wildcat, Flannery O’Connor (Maya Hawke) is determined to be a writer. We follow her as she works on her craft and commits to writing that is deeply personal, so personal that it will haunt her until she can get the words on paper. 

What to Watch For: Ethan Hawke directed and co-wrote the film. The screenplay was written by him on the request of his daughter Maya, who longed to portray O’Connor before she became too old. 

Word on the Street: The film played to a packed house at the 2023 Rome International Film Festival. 

My Take: Maya Hawke is on quite a run of successful roles with the TV series Stranger Things and last year’s films Asteroid City, The Kill Room, and Maestro. 

Dragonkeeper

Dragonkeeper   (2024)

Rating: PG

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, May 3, 2024.

Summary: DragonKeeper is set in ancient times, when dragons were once friends with men, but men’s greed and lust for power ended the alliance and the magical creatures were hunted down. Years later, in a remote fortress, a young enslaved girl named Ping meets and befriends an imprisoned imperial dragon. Together, the two will team up and escape their captors, and journey across the Empire to save the dragon’s lineage. 

What to Watch For: The film was nominated for the Best Spanish Film at the Malaga Spanish Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Co-director Salvador Simo is best known for his 2018 film Bunuel in The Labyrinth of the Turtles.

My Take: I am always ready for a good animated film.

Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg

Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg   (2023)

Release Date: In theatres and on Digital on Friday, May 3, 2024.

Summary: The documentary Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg is on the life of Anita Pallenberg, who dated three members of one of the most famous rock groups of all time, The Rolling Stones. 

What to Watch For: The film was nominated for the Golden Eye award at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Scarlett Johansson portrays Anita’s voice in the film.

My Take: Anyone dating and having children with Keith Richards must have had an interesting life.

Lost Soulz

Lost Soulz   (2023)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, May 3, 2024.

Summary: In Lost Soulz, a young rapper from Austin named Sol (Sauve Sidle) meets a world-weary band and decides to go on tour with them to learn about life on the road. It will be a journey of self-discovery, music, and friendship in the heart of Texas.

What to Watch For: The film was a hit on the film festival circuit. It won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2023 Tallgrass International Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The movie is from filmmaker Katherine Propper, who is known for her award-winning films Street Flame (2019) and Birds (2022).

My Take: Any film with music that starts out in Austin, Texas, is my type of film.

Mars Express

Mars Express   (2023)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, May 3, 2024.

Summary: Mars Express is set in the 23rd century on Mars, where Private investigator Aline Ruby and her android companion Carlos are hired by a wealthy businessman to track down a notorious hacker. The case becomes complex, involving murder, corruption, and a missing girl who holds a secret about robots that could change the face of the universe.

What to Watch For: The film premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film was nominated for a César Award, France’s version of the Academy Awards.

My Take: The film is directed by Jérémie Périn, best known for his work on the animated TV series Lastman.
