Are you prepared to return to a planet full of apes? I hope so, as there’s a new addition to the series with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. In this installment, we see what the future is like after Cesar became victorious and the apes took over. 

This week also features Chris Pine’s Poolman, a film he wrote and directed with an all-star cast. In addition to Chris Pine in the featured role, we get Annette Bening, Danny DeVito, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and more. Also added to the mix is an outrageous comedy in Not Another Church Movie and a rom-com in Mother of Bride starring Brooke Shields and Miranda Cosgrove.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: May 6, 2024, – May 12, 2024

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes   (2024)

Rating:  PG-13

Release Date: In theaters nationwide on Friday, May 10, 2024.

Summary: Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes takes place many years after Caesar’s reign, when a young ape goes on a journey that will make him question everything he’s been taught about the past, especially the history of humans. A human woman (Freya Allan) becomes the key to the young ape’s quest, though he learns she has her own plans. 

What to Watch For: Freya Allan is best known for her role as Ciri on the TV series The Witcher.

Word on the Street: The film is set about 300 years after the 2017 film War for the Planet of the Apes. 

My Take: This is the first film of the series to be released in the IMAX format.

Poolman

Poolman   (2023)

Rating:  N/A

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, May 10, 2024.

Summary: Poolman is the story of Darren Barrenman (Chris Pine), a man who loves his hometown of LA and fights to protect it while caring for the pool in his apartment block. Darren is hired to uncover the truth behind a shady councilman, and he enlists his friends to help him get the dirt on the politician. Darren is about to uncover more than just a little dirt about his beloved city. 

What to Watch For: Chris Pine wrote and directed the film.

Word on the Street: The cast includes Annette Bening, Danny DeVito, Jennifer Jason Leigh, DeWanda Wise, Stephen Tobolowsky, Juliet Mills, John Ortiz, and Ray Wise.

My Take:  I have been enamored with Jennifer Jason Leigh since her performance as Stacy Hamilton, the mall worker extraordinaire, in the 1982 classic Fast Times at Ridgemont High. 

Not Another Church Movie

Not Another Church Movie   (2024)

Rating:  R

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, May 10, 2024.

Summary: In Not Another Church Movie, God (Jamie Foxx) has called upon Taylor Pherry (Kevin Daniels) to write a hit movie using his strange and crazy family as inspiration. However, the Devil (Mickey Rourke) has gotten wind of the plan and has his own ideas on disrupting the entire ordeal.

What to Watch For: Besides Foxx and Rourke, the all-star cast includes Vivica A. Fox, Lamorne Morris, Jasmine Guy, Tisha Campbell, Kyla Pratt, and Patricia Belcher.

Word on the Street: This is Johnny Mack’s directorial debut. Mack wrote for the TV series Real Husbands of Hollywood and Dad Stop Embarrassing Me!

My Take: Mickey Rourke has experience playing the Devil in a film. He played the Devil in the very 1987 controversial film Angel Heart. 

Mother of the Bride

Mother of the Bride  (2024)

Rating: TV-PG

Release Date:  Premiering on Netflix on Thursday, May 9, 2024.

Summary: Mother of the Bride begins when Lana (Brooke Shields) is given the happy but shocking news that her daughter Emma (Miranda Cosgrove) is getting married. Things get complicated when she arrives at the destination wedding and discovers that the man her daughter is marrying is the son of a man (Benjamin Bratt) who broke her heart in college.

What to Watch For: Director of the film, Mark Walters, is known for his movies He’s All That (2021), Magic Camp (2020), Mr. Popper’s Penguins (2011), and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009).

Word on the Street: Fans of iCarly and Despicable Me will want to see this film starring Miranda Cosgrove.

My Take: I am a big fan of Rachel Harris (The Hangover, Lucifer, Suits), who plays Lana’s best friend in the film. While primarily a comedic actress, my favorite performance of hers was in the 2011 drama Natural Selection.

Three Promises

Three Promises  (2023)

Release Date: In select theaters on Friday, May 10, 2024.  

Summary: The documentary Three Promises is where filmmaker Yousef Srouji looks back a year in his life when Israeli forces struck back and invaded the West Bank after there was an uprising. During this crisis, Srouji’s mother captured footage of their family

What to Watch For: The film’s title comes from the fact that Srouji’s mother made three promises to God after each brush with death the family had.

Word on the Street: The film has been a big winner on the film festival circuit, including winning the Best Documentary Feature at the 2023 Camden International Film Festival.

My Take: I can’t wait to see this documentary.

Aisha  (2022)

Release Date: In theaters and on digital on Friday, May 10, 2024.

Summary: Aisha is about a young Nigerian woman (Letitia Wright) who, for years, has been trying to get asylum from Ireland’s immigration system. She meets a former prisoner, Conor (Josh O’Connor), and starts a friendship with him that may be short-lived, as Aisha’s future in Ireland may soon be over.

What to Watch For: Letitia Wright is known for her Emmy-nominated performance in the TV series Black Mirror and her role as Shuri in the Black Panther film series.

Word on the Street: At the 2023 Irish Film and Television Awards, the film was nominated for ten awards and took home three of them.

My Take: Josh O’Connor is hot off his role as Patrick Zweig in Challengers.

Hazard

Hazard   (2022)

Release Date: In theaters and on digital on Friday, May 10, 2024.

Summary: Hazard is about Noah (Dimitri ‘Vegas’ Thivaios), who loves three things in life: his girlfriend, his daughter, and his car. Noah needs money, so he accepts a driving job that could result in his losing his life, his family, and his car.

What to Watch For: Dimitri Thivaios is best known as one of the world’s best DJs along with his brother Like Mike. 

Word on the Street: The film won the Audience Award at the 2022 Toronto After Dark Film Festival.

My Take: Jonas Govaerts, who is known for his award-winning films, Cub (2014) and Transfer (2021) directs the film.

The Last Stop in Yuma County

The Last Stop in Yuma County   (2023)

Release Date:  In theaters on Friday, May 10, 2024.

Summary: In The Last Stop in Yuma County, a traveling salesman (Jim Cummings) is out of gas and stranded at a rural Arizona rest stop restaurant, which isn’t due for a gas delivery for a few days. A bad day gets worse when two bank robbers walk into the restaurant and have no qualms about using violence to get what they want. However, the robbers are about to discover that the locals aren’t afraid of a little violence. 

What to Watch For: Jim Cummings is best known for his award-winning film Thunder Road (2019), which he wrote, directed, and starred in.

Word on the Street: This is the first feature film for director Francis Galluppi, who has just signed up to direct the next Evil Dead film.

My Take: After seeing the outstanding trailer, I can’t wait to see this film.

Force of Nature: The Dry 2

Force of Nature: The Dry 2  (2024)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theaters on Friday, May 10, 2024.

Summary: Federal Agent Aaron Falk (Eric Bana) is back in Force of Nature: The Dry 2. Five women take part in a hiking retreat, but only four come out on the other side. The problem is that the missing woman is a key informant on a case that Agent Falk is working on, and she must be found. 

What to Watch For: This is a sequel to the 2020 Australian film The Dry, which was a huge worldwide hit.

Word on the Street: The film is based on the best-selling novels by Jane Harper.

My Take: I loved the first film and will see this one to continue my crime-solving adventures with Agent Falk.
