Benicio Del Toro and Martin Scorsese Developing Hernando Cortes Series for HBO

Benicio Del Toro is teaming up with Martin Scorsese to executive produce a TV series about Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortes.

The star and the Oscar-winning director are developing a project called Cortes through HBO about the 16th century explorer who led an expedition that caused the fall of the Aztec Empire.

Malinche, the Mayan girl who helped him conquer the Aztecs, and Aztec leader Montezuma, who Cortes eventually put into chains, will also be leading characters in the story, according to Deadline.

Also according to the site, additional executive producer credits go to Rick Yorn, Scorsese and Del Toro’s manager; president of production for Scorsese’s Sikelia Prods, Emma Tillinger Koskoff; and Laura Bickford, Del Toro’s producing partner on Che.

Scorsese is set to direct the project with Del Toro in talks to star in the titular role.
