Theo James Talks ‘The Divergent Series: Allegiant – Part 1’
After being cast in the Divergent franchise, British star Theo James was propelled to international stardom. He plays brooding hero Four, alongside Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort and Miles Teller.
Prior to the Divergent filmes, fans will remember him as obnoxious holiday rep James in The Inbetweeners Movie and vampire David in Underworld: Awakening.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever played a character that’s similar to myself because in a way, I enjoy playing characters I don’t like,” James told America’s InStyle magazine. “I’m quite insular and private, so I shy away from the idea of bringing my true self to the screen.”
James is back as Four in The Divergent Series: Allegiant – Part 1, the penultimate movie in the franchise, based on the young adult novels by Veronica Roth. The film hit theaters tomorrow, and sees Tris (Woodley) and Four face up to the shocking truth of their dystopian society.
“The story really evolves,” James explained. “A whole new world is introduced that goes on outside the world that was set up in the other two (films). Visually and conceptually, it’s very different, which is fun.”
The films may be set in a war-torn future, but that hasn’t stopped the 31-year-old from questioning how the world is changing now, especially in day-to-day life.
“Things have changed dramatically since the ’80s, when I was born, and not very much for the better. So I believe these dystopian science-fiction stories can help. In an uncertain world, even in a fantasy environment, people wonder what the future will be like,” he said.
