Nancy Drew Turns 90 and… Is Getting Murdered?

The Death of Nancy Drew

Since 1930, Nancy Drew – a persistent detective and feminist – has been a series loved by children (and adults) across the world. So many of us grew up with the Nancy Drew series. It was among the first novels we read, and it eventually led us into loving Murder She Wrote and Veronica Mars.

In 2020, Nancy Drew is not only a series of novels, but she’s also got her own comic, a television show, and multiple movies. You would think things are going pretty well for her… However, Nancy Drew turns 90 this year, and while celebrating her character’s 90th anniversary and commemorating this important date… Nancy is killed? You read that right… Here’s what’s up.

What is the new Nancy Drew Series?

Dynamite Entertainment is releasing a comic book series in April in celebration of the iconic character turning 90. The premise: Nancy Drew is dead and the Hardy Boys are here to investigate.

The comic books will be a monthly series named Nancy Drew & The Hardy Boys: The Death of Nancy Drew. Although the series is a follow up to Nancy Drew & The Hardy Boys: The Big Lie, Dynamite says that this will be standalone series. Writer Anthony Del Col (who pinned the last series) is back, and Riverdale artist Joe Eisma is also joining him.

While apart of different series, the worlds of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys have seen crossovers in the past. Publishing company Simon and Schuster is still printing Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books. The books are written by various authors under the pen names Carolyn Keene and Franklin W. Dixon.

The Nancy Drew Franchise

With many film adaptations and a new TV show on The CW – Nancy Drew has shown that she is still resonating with girls and women. With Nancy Drew turning 90 and being killed in the new comic, you can assume there will be backlash. Many people took to Twitter stating how it’s not okay for Nancy to be killed off only to have two men come in to solve her murder after years of hard work. Some even believe Nancy is not really dead.

Regardless of what’s to come, I can’t say that I’m not curious. Nancy Drew & The Hardy Boys: The Death of Nancy Drew book 1 will be released sometime in April 2020. It is being encouraged to pre-order the comics ahead of time, though. Individual copies will be sold digitally, as well, on Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, DynamiteDigital, and more.
