What a treat the film ‘CODA’ is, currently playing on Apple TV+. Not only is the storyline good, but the most positive feature about it is that 3 of the 4 main characters are deaf! And I say that because there are moments where you are taken into what it is like to be a person who cannot hear anything at all. The director does an amazing job at handling this aspect of the move.
‘CODA’ stars Marlee Matlin as mom Jackie Rossi, Daniel Durant as the son, Leo Rossi, Troy Kotsur as dad Frank Rossi and Emilia Jones as the central character, Ruby Rossi. Ruby is the only hearing person in the family, who depends on her to interpret for them with the entire community, as they tend to stay to themselves. The acronym CODA stands for child of deaf adults. The film centers on Emilia and her coming of age, who just happens to have a great talent at singing. Her music teacher is encouraging her to go to music school but the family is so dependent on her they don’t want her to go. Thus the focus of the movie is on the struggle she has with trying to help her family while having her own life. It is a really well done film in how this balance plays out.
All of the actors in this film do an amazing job and being able to watch them communicate with sign language and the reading of lips definitely makes the film all that more intriguing as you watch as they struggle to make a living in a hearing world, depending on their one source of communication with everyone else, their daughter. This film has laughter, anger, love, tears – all kinds or emotions. It is all very well played out and earns the raves it is getting. A great film!
