Doom Patrol Season 3 Recap

So here’s everything that went down in Doom Patrol Season 3.

The third season was the first to not end on a major cliffhanger. But the end of the season still left us with plenty of open-ended questions.

What will happen with Robotman’s giant body? Has Rita Farr descended too far into villainy to still be considered a hero? Can Laura De Mille ever truly become a hero?

Doom Patrol Season 3

At the Beginning

Season 3 picked up where Season 2 left off. Dorothy Spinner still had to defeat the villain the Candlemaker, an ancient entity she accidentally unleashes through her power to bring her imaginary friends to life. As you may recall, Dorothy is the daughter of the Chief.

Speaking of the Chief, he finally succumbs to his advanced age and passes away. Ally of the Doom Patrol Willoughby Kipling, played by Supernatural’s Mark Sheppard, manages to use his magic to save the Chief’s head. The disembodied head can now lead the team from his body-less state.

With the death of the complicated figure that both created and saved the tragic heroes, the members of the Doom Patrol team go their separate ways to cope with their identities and process their emotions. However, fate won’t let them be separated for long. Samuelson, the servant of Garguax, goes rogue, killing Garguax and the Doom Patrol team.

Since two episodes would barely be enough for a season, Dorothy and Larry contact the Dead Detective Agency to rescue the Doom Patrol’s souls trapped in the underworld where they each meet a dead family member.

However, they don’t return unscathed. They become zombified as a result of their encounter with the Night Nurse. But the Chief sacrifices his brain to de-zombify them.

The time-traveling Laura De Mille, who becomes Madame Rouge when she joins the Brotherhood of Evil, arrives in the manor with a mission; except she can’t quite remember what that mission actually is.

Her appearance marks the introduction of the Sisterhood of Dada, a society of metahumans with a plot to cleanse the earth. They eventually release what they call the Eternal Flagellation.

The Finale

The Season 3 finale ends as the group decides to truly embrace their identity as superheroes under the new name Doom Force. They head together to the Suez Canal to stop a monster as a united front.

Doom Patrol Season 4 Announcement

On October 16, 2021, Doom Patrol Season 4 was announced at the DC FanDome event. The announcers did not disclose many more details, as not all of Season 3 had yet been released with 4 episodes left to go. At the same time, the sister show Titans also got announced as having another season on the way.

However, we do know that this season will once again air on HBO Max. The show switched over to the streaming service after DC Universe dissolved. This service was DC’s attempt to compete with other companies, like Disney’s Disney+, that created a streaming site to house their own original content.

Titans and the adult animated series Harley Quinn also transferred over to HBO Max. The producers hoped that since HBO Max has a much wider user base, the shows will have a greater draw than they did on such a niche streaming site. Instead of exclusively diehard DC fans, casual viewers would have easier access to the show.

While no major details of the plot have yet been released, Cliff’s multiple uses of the term “Doom Force” could have more meaning than a casual joke. Doom Force was actually its own comic by Grant Morrison that parodied Image Comics and his own storytelling style. It came with its own set of characters, so maybe these new superheroes could join the current team.

Doom Patrol Season 4 Cast

The end of Doom Patrol Season 3 implies that the core team will once again return. And they’re now rebranded as Doom Force (a name that everyone except Cliff despises).

You can expect that cast member April Bowlby will play Rita Farr. Matthew Zuk and Matt Bomer will play Larry Trainor. Jovian Wade will play Victor Stone aka Cyborg. Diane Guerrero will play Jane and her many alters. And Brendan Fraser will play Cliff Steele.

However, the fate of Cliff’s robot body is still up in the air. So we cannot be certain that Riley Shanahan will play Robotman’s body again.

And since we need to explore whether Laura De Mille can become a hero, Michelle Gomez will play her and perhaps her alter ego Madame Rouge.

After his death, revival as a head, and second death as a brain, Timothy Dalton as “Chief” Niles Calder may not make a return.

Secondary characters like Danny the Ambulance, Mark Sheppard as Willoughby Kipling, Abi Monterey as Dorothy, and the Dead Boy Detectives have a high chance of returning as well in some capacity.

Doom Patrol Season 4 Release Date News

The team has yet to officially announce a Doom Patrol Season 4 release date. But we can take a look at the previous release schedule to see when we expect the new season to premiere.

Doom Patrol Season 1 aired in February 2019, Season 2 aired in June 2020, and Season 3 aired in September 2021, so it’s clear that even with COVID, the show has a tight turnaround time. If everything goes to plan, we can likely expect Doom Patrol Season 4 to arrive on HBO Max in 2022 during the fall.

We’ll keep you posted as more details are announced! In the meantime, let us know your thoughts on Doom Patrol Season 3 in the comments below!
