Early Life

Angelina Jolie Voight was born in Los Angeles California on the June 4, 1975. She would later petition the court to have her surname, Voight, legally removed. Needless to say, she’s had a rocky relationship with her father, Hollywood actor Jon Voight.

Jolie’s mother, Marcheline Bertrand, was also an actress and Jolie’s brother, James Haven, is an actor as well. Even Jolie’s godparents, Maximilian Schell and Jacqueline Bisset, are in the industry.

When Jolie’s parents separated in 1976, her mother gave up her acting career to take care of the children. They moved from Los Angeles to New York and back to Los Angeles. During these formative years, Jolie spent a lot of time watching movies with her mother, which would end up creating Jolie’s passion for acting.

Jolie attended Beverly Hills High School, and she would eventually shift to the alternative school, Moreno High School. She became, as she described herself a “punk kid with tattoos“. Her teenage years weren’t free from challenge. She found it challenging to emotionally connect with those around her, which lead her to harming herself.

Jolie’s first role in her film career was as Tosh in Lookin’ to Get Out back in 1982. It was a movie that starred her father Jon Voight, and she was only 6-years-old at the time.

One of Jolie’s most critically acclaimed performance was in the 1999 psychological drama Girl, Interrupted. For this role, she won three major awards as a supporting actress – the Oscar, the Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild Award.

Angelina Jolie is one of the few Hollywood actresses that can command a salary in the millions to appear in a film. But of course, that kind of status took a lot of hard work to achieve. In the first Lara Croft movie, she received a paycheck of $7 million. This increased to $12 million for the second movie because of the immense success of the first film.

For her roles in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Good Shepherd, and A Mighty Heart, she received $10 million each. In the action film Wanted, she earned $15 million.

By 2010, she earned $20 million for Salt as well as for The Tourist. Despite not performing well at the US box office, The Tourist did quite well internationally, with worldwide box office earnings coming in at an impressive $278.3 million.

Angelina Jolie is very passionate about humanitarian efforts. She has traveled the world on field missions and has donated a lot of funds to a variety of relief groups and advocacies.

From 2001 to 2012, Jolie had been a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations. But her role has since elevated to that of a full-fledged diplomat, as she is now Special Envoy. Together with ex-husband Brad Pitt, Jolie has also founded the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation.

Personal Life

Jolie’s first husband was Jonny Lee Miller, who she married in 1996. The relationship lasted only a year, and their divorce was finalized in 1999.

A year later, she married the actor Billy Bob Thornton after dating for just two months. In March 2002, they adopted a son, Maddox, from Cambodia. But they separated just a few months later and were divorced by the following year.
