Warner Bros. Discovery Wants to Make More Harry Potter Movies

Harry Potter

More Harry Potter content might be on the horizon in the not-so-distance future. Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav has recently revealed that the company is looking to create more content from the Harry Potter universe.

The news came during an investor’s call on November 3, 2022, where Zaslav stated that the studio will be placing a focus on franchises and are actively seeking J.K. Rowling’s approval to make another film.

“We’re going to focus on franchises. We haven’t had a Superman movie in 13 years. We haven’t done a ‘Harry Potter’ in 15 years. The DC movies and the ‘Harry Potter’ movies provided a lot of the profits for Warner Bros… over the past 25 years.” Zaslav stated on the call.

“If we can do something with J.K. on ‘Harry Potter’ going forward,” Zaslav added on the prospect of more Potter films.

Warner Bros. Discovery Wants to Focus on Growing Franchises

He went on to say that Warner Bros. Discovery should take advantage of major franchises such as Sex and the City and Lord of the Rings.

Rowling has been no stranger to controversy lately with the transphobic comments she’s posted to Twitter. Several cast members have distanced themselves from Rowling. However, Warner Brothers Discovery seems keen to work with her again according to Thursday’s call.

Zaslav, 62, went on to say, “What are the movies that have brands that are understood and loved everywhere in the world? Outside the US, in the aggregate, Europe, Latin America, and Asia, have about 40% of the theaters that we have here in the US, and there’s local content.”

“So when you have a franchise movie, you can often make two to three times the amount of money that you can make in the US because you get a slot, and the focus on big movies, the tentpoles that people love and people are going to leave home and go to dinner early to go to see, and we have a lot of them,” he adds.
