Jennifer Grey Teases ‘Dirty Dancing’ Sequel

Jennifer Grey

Jennifer Grey is already teasing 2024’s highly anticipated Dirty Dancing sequel. And even though filming has yet to begin, Grey is already revealing details about what fans can expect.

Grey, best known for the original 1987 Dirty Dancing, will be an executive producer on the project. And she’ll also reprise her role as Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman. However, she’s not the only face that fans will recognize from the original flick.

“It’s happening. [We’re not filming] until the spring…,” Grey, 62, confirms. “Baby is quite a few years older. You will see a few other characters from the original.”

“It’s tricky and also exciting.” she adds.

Patrick Swayze’s Role Won’t Be Recast

It had already been confirmed that Patrick Swayze’s role as Johnny Castle wouldn’t be recast.

“All I can say is there is no replacing anyone who’s passed — you never try to repeat anything that’s magic like that,” Grey states. “You just go for something different.”

But Johnny will still be a part of the plot to some degree, according to director Jonathan Levine.

“Johnny is a part of Baby’s journey in the story.” Levine confirms.

The Dirty Dancing Sequel Will Return to Kellerman’s

An additional detail that Grey revealed was that the sequel will have the same setting as the original flick.

“I would say that you can count on it being at Kellerman’s, returning to Kellerman’s.” Grey confirmed to Extra.

Director Jonathan Levine Promises Not to Ruin Fans’ Childhoods by Messing Up the Sequel

Levine is also making a promise to fans, stating that he won’t “ruin [their] childhood” by tainting their memories of the original with the sequel.

“While the original ‘Dirty Dancing’ has always been one of my favorite films, I never imagined I would direct the sequel,” Levine says. “Through co-writing it, I fell in love with the characters (new and old), the world of 1990s Catskills New York, and the music, which will range from songs from the original movie to ’90s hip-hop.

“I can’t wait to collaborate with Jennifer to bring this beautiful story of summer and romance and dancing to a generation of new fans,” he adds. “And to the longtime ones, I promise we will not ruin your childhood. We will tackle the assignment with sophistication, ambition, and, above all, love.”
