‘Fallout’ Season 2: Release Date Speculation, Cast, News, and More

Fallout Season 2

Video games have been adapted for the big and small green right and left in recent years. And, Fallout has officially joining those ranks as a live-action series, now available for streaming on Prime Video. With its first season, Fallout has already gained critical acclaim, reaching 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. With its success, it’s not surprising that Fallout Season 2 is already in the works.

Amazon has marked the show as one of the top three most-watched series on its streaming platform. And, with a second season on the way… and with what’s happening in the first season, fans can only anticipate what comes next. Here’s what we know so far about Fallout Season 2. Possible spoilers ahead for Season 1.

Will There Be a Fallout Season 2?

It’s great news for Fallout fans as Prime Video has renewed the series for a second season. The show’s renewal was announced a week into the premiere of its first season.

Fallout was created by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner, who are also executive producers and showrunners. Also executive producing are Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy for Kilter Films under a deal with Amazon. Athena Wickham also serves as executive producer under Kilter Films, Todd Howard for Bethesda Game Studios, and James Altman for Bethesda Softworks. Fallout is produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Kilter Films in association with Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks.

“Praise be to our insanely brilliant showrunners, Geneva and Graham, to our kick-ass cast, to Todd and James, and all the legends at Bethesda, and to Jen, Vernon, and the amazing team at Amazon for their incredible support of this show. We can’t wait to blow up the world all over again,” said Nolan and Joy.

“Jonah, Lisa, Geneva, and Graham have captivated the world with this ground-breaking, wild ride of a show,” said Amazon MGM Studios head Jennifer Salke.

Salke continued, “The bar was high for lovers of this iconic video game and so far we seem to have exceeded their expectations while bringing in millions of new fans of the franchise. The cast led by Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Walton Goggins, and Kyle MacLachlan have knocked it out of the park! We’d like to thank Jonah and Lisa and our friends at Bethesda for bringing the show to us as well as Geneva and Graham for coming aboard as showrunners. We are thrilled to announce season two after only one week out and take viewers even farther into the surreal world of ‘Fallout.’”

What’s Fallout About?

Fallout is based on the popular video game series of the same name. The show takes place 200 years following the apocalypse and follows “the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters that are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird, and highly violent universe waiting for them.” It’s also worth noting that the series follows the canon of the wider franchise.

In the first season, Hank was revealed to be one of Vault-Tec’s junior employees placed in cryosleep. Along with Betty Pearson, both were in cryosleep in Vault 31 before The Great War. Hank was also reawakened 200 years later to help Vault-Tec take control of the US and responsible for The Fall of Shady Sands.

Hank’s wife Rose, on the other hand, was turned ito a ghoul due to radiation poisoning from the nuclear warhead. Rose ultimately met her demise in the hands of her daughter Lucy by the eighth episode. Meanwhile, Maximus’ family was killed in the initial blast. Hank also happens to be one of the biggest fans of Cooper Howard, the actor now known as The Ghoul.

The Ghoul is on the search for Hank to learn which vault his wife and daughters Barb and Janey are in. Barb revealed that the high-ranking Vault-Tec employee secured a spot in one of the most prestigious underground bunkers for her family. However, Cooper’s place was supposedly revoked following their divorce, turning him into the moniker he is now known by.

The Cast

Because Fallout Season 2 is still in early development, no word yet on which cast members will officially return. But those expected to come back for Fallout Season 2 include Ella Purnell as Lucy MacLean, Aaron Moten as Maximus, Walton Goggins as The Ghoul/Cooper Howard, and Kyle MacLachlan as Hank MacLean. Also expected to return are Moises Arias as Norm MacLean, Xelia Mendes-Jones as Dane, Johnny Pemberton as Thaddeus, Frances Turner as Barb Howard, and Leslie Uggams as Betty Pearson.

Others also likely to return are Dave Register as Chet, Annabel O’Hagen as Stephanie, Zach Cherry as Woody, and Rodrigo Luzzi as Reg. Michael Esper may also come back for Season 2 as Bud Askins as well as Sarita Choudhury as Lee Moldaver.

Of course, the upcoming season may also bring on new cast members. Nolan told IGN that Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul has inquired about appearing in Season 2. Matt Berry of What We Do in the Shadows notably made a cameo appearance in Season 1. Fans can probably expect more star-studded cameos ahead.

Purnell talked about her character’s journey with GQ throughout Season 1. “I don’t know who she’s gonna be in Season 2. This is what happens when you break the unbreakable. I don’t know who she’s about to become. How Lucy feels about her hope…she recognizes that something is irreversibly lost or broken inside her. Maybe she still does maintain it in Season 2, but it will never be the same. It can’t,” said the actress.

What to Expect in Season 2

As for what Fallout Season 2 will be about, it’s hard to say. However, there have been some plots in Season 1 that are bound to be further explored in a second season. Speaking with TechRadar ahead of the first season premiere, Nolan hinted that the show’s team “had some really cool conversations” about Season 2. However, Nolan didn’t elaborate further on those conversations.

One particular storyline that could be further explored in Fallout Season 2 is related to Hank. Hank was revealed in Season 1 to have had ties to the show’s main characters. However, it remains to be seen if Hank becomes Season 2’s main antagonist. The same goes for Barb, who was involved in orchestrating the idea of The Great War.

Purnell also shared that she’d want Lucy to be “her own person” in Season 2.

“I’d like to see her become her own person,” Purnell told GQ. “I’d like to see her form some opinions that feel truly and wholly hers, and not a product of her upbringing or a product of Vault-Tec. I think part of her being a good person is just truly her. And I think that is just who she is. I don’t know if that’s going to stay or going to go, I’d be down to play it either way. But I’d also like to see her go, like ‘No, I don’t like this food’ or ‘No, I don’t think what you…’ A little tiny rebellion maybe.”

Fallout Season 2 Release Date Speculation

There’s no official release date yet for Fallout Season 2, as the upcoming season is still in early development. However, filming for Season 2 is expected to start in September 2024 under the working title “Hondo.” Filming will take place in both Los Angeles and Toronto.

When it comes to possible future seasons of Fallout? Nolan told IGN that there is a sense of responsibility to have a plan.

“I think you have a responsibility when you undertake one of these journeys to have a bit of a plan. You’d also be foolish to not account for the things along the way. But you also want to be flexible enough and adaptable enough that you’re not locked into that. And for the obvious reason that especially these days with these shows, you want to make every season as great as you can,” said Nolan.

Nolan continued, “If you’re lucky enough to go again, you make a follow-up. You leave enough material and you have enough of a master plan from the beginning that you know what the next step would be. And we have been talking for some time now about the next steps for Fallout, and we’re very excited about it.”

For now, fans can rewatch the entire first season of Fallout on Prime Video.
