What We Do in the Shadows Returns for Season 6

FX renewed What We Do In the Shadows for two more seasons ahead of Season 4. The show is based on the 2014 film of the same name, co-created by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. The series follows a group of vampires who are sharing a house in Staten Island, New York. The mockumentary comedy shows the ups and downs of vampires trying to coexist in the modern world.

“There’s a lot of life left in our favorite vampires from Staten Island. And FX couldn’t be more thrilled to commit to two additional seasons of this phenomenal series,” said FX Entertainment President Nick Grad in a statement at the time. “What We Do in the Shadows excels on every level, from the brilliant cast and surprising guest stars to the producers, writers, directors, and crew. We can’t wait for everyone to enjoy season four, knowing that the next two are on the way.”

The upcoming season is also bittersweet for the show’s fans as Season 6 will be the final season, according to Screenrant. What We Do in the Shadows has gained critical acclaim during its previous seasons, earning several nominations, including Critics Choice Awards nods for Best Comedy Series and an Emmy for its costumes.

Clement and Waititi are also the show’s executive producers along with showrunner Paul Simms, Stefani Robinson, Sam Johnson, Garrett Basch, and Eli Bush.

Who Will Be Returning for Season 6?

The show’s core cast will most likely return for What We Do in the Shadows Season 6. This includes Kayvan Novak as Nandor the Relentless, Matt Berry as Leslie “Lazlo” Cravensworth, Harvey Guillen as Guillermo de la Cruz, Kristen Schaal as The Guide, and Mark Proksch as Colin Robinson. The same goes for Natasia Demetriou as Nadja.

As always, fans can also expect more cameos. Previous seasons of the show featured cameos from Nick Kroll, Dave Bautista, Tilda Swinton, and Sofia Coppola among other high-profile guest appearances.

Guillen became a breakout star from the show, earning praise for his character’s Season 4 character arc.

“Guillermo fell into a world of fantasy where he longed to be a vampire because what are vampires?” said Guillen.

“They live forever. They’re immortal. They’re usually very hot. They’re usually very rich. He wanted that life where no one could mess with him. But his coming out was really special because he’s torn between his chosen family and his biological family. And the only reason he comes out…it’s not because he’s ready. His coming out was only meant for someone else. And usually, that is the case. Coming out is usually for someone else’s benefit – to make them feel comfortable. And so he was doing it to buffer the situation and be like, ‘Okay, she’s not my girlfriend because I’m gay,’” Guillen added.

What Happened in Season 5?

In What We Do in the Shadows Season 5, Guillermo is finally on his way to becoming a vampire. That was, until he realized that drinking the blood of humans wasn’t for him, thus, his transformation back to being a mortal. Derek also gets to move into the house despite having a stake through his heart for eternity.

During the time of the show’s two-season renewal, Robinson and Simms said that they needed to answer the question about Guillermo before the show ended. This was seemingly answered with Guillermo’s transformation by Season 5. Meanwhile, Lazlo used Guillermo’s blood to perform ghastly experiments on animals.

“The writing has always been strong,” Proksch told Comicbook.com in a previous interview. Proksch added that Simms revealed how the cast would improvise for a portion of the show.

“We always do what’s on the written page and get that take or two done. And then we go off. For my character, because it has to seem so natural that I’m talking about these things, a lot of times, they’ll put in a starting sentence for me, a jumping-off point, and then I come up with the rest. And because it has to seem so natural, it’s usually subjects that I know about. And so, I can go back into my useless information bank and tap into that.”

What to Expect in Season 6

Based on what happened in Season 5, fans know what What We Do in the Shadows Season 6 will likely be about. Some tension between Nandor and Guillermo may be expected even after the two reconcile, and Nandor ultimately decides not to kill Guillermo.

Guillermo may also face some challenges of his own after finally turning into a vampire, only to become human again. Season 6 may also show if there was an impact on Guillermo’s nature after having once been a vampire.

“Well, you’ll find out when we get to Season 6. But I mean, Paul Simms and the writers are so good at taking it where you maybe don’t expect it to go,” What We Do in the Shadows co-executive producer Yana Gorskaya told TV Insider.

“And I think with these will-they-or-won’t-they type relationships, oftentimes you don’t actually want the thing you think you want. And it may be more interesting to take it in other directions. But I’m not going to spoil any of that because that’s where we’re going,” Gorskaya added.

Fans can also expect Season 6 to show how Derek navigates being a zombie-like being. There may also be some guilt coming from Guillermo’s end over this.
