‘Feud’ Season 3: Release Date Speculation, Cast, News, and More!
FX’s Feud anthology series is currently airing its second season, focused on one of New York high society’s most famous spats. The show, which is known for assembling a strong ensemble cast paired with a drama-fueled story, has been met with critical acclaim so far. So it now leaves fans of the series wondering whether there will be a third season. And if there would be a third season, which famous feud would it be about?
Here’s what we know so far about Feud Season 3. Spoilers ahead for the current season.
Is There a Feud Season 3?
FX has yet to confirm Feud for a third season officially. The anthology series first premiered in 2017, focusing on the famous spat between Hollywood stars Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. Seven years later, the show returned for its second season, centering on the feud between author and actor Truman Capote and a group of New York socialites.
It might not be surprising that FX has yet to officially renew the show, as the second season is still currently airing. The ratings and viewership numbers are still factors to consider. The seven-year hiatus between its first and second seasons may also play a part in whether it can continue. However, for comparison, Feud was already renewed for a second season ahead of its pilot.
But even as the network has yet to make an official confirmation, the show might have been confirmed due to the reported production schedule, which indicates that filming will begin in April on new episodes.
Who Will Star in Season 3?
There’s no confirmed cast for Feud Season 3 just yet. Because of its structure, Season 3 will bring on a new ensemble cast to lead the show. Fans will have to wait and see for more announcements on the third season.
Season 1 starred Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis and Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford. The first season followed the infamous relationship between the two actresses during and after they filmed the 1962 movie What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Also starring in Season 1 were Judy Davis, Jackie Hoffman, Alfred Molina, Stanley Tucci, and Alison Wright. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Kathy Bates also made appearances in the first season.
Season 2, titled Capote vs. The Swans, stars Tom Hollander as author Truman Capote and Naomi Watts as socialite Babe Paley. Starring alongside Hollander and Watts are Diane Lane, Calista Flockhart, Chloe Sevigny, Demi Moore, and Molly Ringwald. Lange also made an appearance as Truman’s mother.
“It was such a great lineup of extraordinary women and great roles,” Watts told ET in January 2024.
“I mean, love and betrayal, the main themes, we’ve all been through that,” said Sevigny during the show’s premiere event. “Having someone you know that you trust then kind of turn their back on you and how heartbreaking that can be, be it a friend or a lover – I think there’s things that everybody can relate to.”
What Feud Will Season 3 Be About?
As Feud is an anthology series, the show’s third season will ultimately take on a whole new controversy. In a 2017 report that was since proven inaccurate, Feud Season 2 was said to follow the fight between royals Princess Diana and Prince (now King) Charles. Also in 2017, according to Vanity Fair, Murphy said he wanted Feud Season 3 to follow a fight between gay men.
It might seem the likelier choice, given the storylines for the first two seasons. But as the story for Feud Season 3 is still under wraps, fans can only watch out for more updates.
“I kept looking at it as a multifaceted examination of what it is to squander your life inadvertently, accidentally, deliberately, self-destructively, on so many different levels,” said writer Jon Robin Baitz about Season 2, who also serves as showrunner.
“I found it to be a cautionary tale and an accurate representation of what can happen when you’re not listening to yourself. Your life becomes about your name on the invitation to the gala, your collections, your standing in a society where you are within a system. The show, very much is for me, about the profound loneliness of beauty and fame.”
In December 2023, Tom Hollander weighed in on the parallels between Capote and his White Lotus character Quentin.
“I thought about how different they were. Truman Capote’s an icon, so I felt a burden of, this is a true story, it’s history, and he’s an extraordinary man who was so individual that various different actors get to play him for all eternity. Quentin is an overprivileged socialite, whereas Truman Capote was a deeply, deeply tragic, flawed, brilliant man. But I suppose both metiers are high society, aren’t they?” Hollander told Entertainment Weekly.
What Happened in Season 2?
Feud Season 2 was based on Truman Capote’s eventual fallout with a group of New York City socialites. The season was based on the book by Laurence Leamer, “Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era.” Gus Van Sant was also brought on board to direct most of the episodes. The scripts were written by Jon Robin Baitz.
The fallout begins after Capote publishes a very controversial chapter of his upcoming book in an issue of Esquire. The chapter titled “La Cote Basque 1965,” featured characters that were clearly based on the women Truman knew. One particular event featured in the chapter was about Babe Paley and her marriage to CBS head Bill Paley. The other event was the scandal surrounding the death of Ann Woodward’s husband, accusing her of murdering him.
The story also delves into Capote’s struggles with alcohol the further his relationship with the Swans deteriorates. Specifically his friendship with Babe.
“They’re two broken people, they’re both in similar kinds of pain,” said Baitz. “They’re both very invested in survival in society while being seen. They’re both profoundly lonely people, they’re both intelligent and performative. I think that they’re linked in an understanding that their lives, much like the royal family, require a kind of ceremony about them, require a kind of artfulness at times.”
