Idris Elba is already teasing 2023’s highly anticipated Luther. In fact, he’s promising fans that the movie, which is inspired by the Luther TV series, will feel the same as it does on the small screen.
Elba, 50, is reprising his role as detective John Luther in the flick. And he notes that despite the shift to cinema, he wanted elements of the show to remain intact.
“I wanted to make sure that even though we had a bigger budget, (we didn’t) distort the parameters of ‘Luther’-land too much.” Elba says in an interview with Empire magazine.
“We do amplify the actions the action and do amplify the stakes. But (Season 3’s) man-under-the-bed moment? That don’t cost you much money. Those moments are still intact.” he adds.
Elba felt that taking his alter ego into a new medium gave him a chance to delve deeper into the character.
“We really peel the onion back here because we had the time and scale to do that,” Elba notes. “It also gives Neil (Cross) a lot more, you know, ‘Luther’-land to play with, in terms of where Luther can go, how he goes, what the landscape is.”
The Luther Movie Will Shift Away from London Setting
Idris Elba had a few more teases about the upcoming film, noting that it would move away from the show’s London setting.
“We break out of the gritty streets of London. We take it outside of that a little bit. And that’s great. It feels like now we’re entering a different life of the ‘Luther’ experience.” Elba reveals.
The Bigger Picture for Luther
The longer-term vision for Idris Elba would be for Luther to become a James Bond style franchise. It’s an interesting goal for the actor, considering how often he was mentioned as a front-runner to take over the role of 007.
“It’s incredible. It’s like graduating. The television show ran a natural course. We did five seasons and each one of them shape-shifted but kept an audience captivated for 10 years,” Elba says.”I’m hoping that this movie literally becomes my Bond. Everyone talks about Bond, but, for me, it’s ‘Luther’.”
