Will There Be More ‘John Wick’ Movies? Here’s What We Know

John Wick 4: Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves

With the early buzz at SXSW, there’s been no shortage of high praise for John Wick: Chapter 4. But with no shortage of rave reviews, fans are naturally asking, will there be more John Wick movies after this release?

Director Chad Stahelski, 54, is hinting that John Wick: Chapter 4 could be the last movie in the franchise, stating that he and star Keanu Reeves are planning to “rest” the series for the time being. Though, he’s not ruling out a potential fifth film.

“In our minds, Keanu and I are done for the moment. We’re going to give ‘John Wick’ a rest. I’m sure the studio has a plan. If everyone loves it and goes kooky, then we’ll take a quiet minute,” Stahelski says in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Stahelski, who as a stunt double for Reeves in The Matrix movies, went on to note that he expects to share some ideas with Reeves once the film is released in Japan.

“‘Wicks’ always, for some weird reason, always get the latest release date in Japan. It’s always like, three months later. If it’s the same time this time, we’ll do a Japanese tour and release the movie in September.” Stahelski says.

“Keanu and I will take a long trip to Tokyo, we’ll sit in the Imperial Hotel Scotch Bar and go, ‘What do you think?’ We’ll have a couple of 20-year-old whiskies and write some ideas on napkins. If those ideas stick maybe we’ll make a movie.” he adds.

The Success of the John Wick Movies

The John Wick movies have become more successful with each film release. 2014’s original film brought in $86 million worldwide against a budget of $20 million. John Wick: Chapter 2 was made for $40 million and it grossed over $171 million globally. Next, there was 2019’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum which grossed more than $328 million worldwide against a budget of $75 million.

Stahelski credits the success of the franchise to careful planning.

“If you had given me $200 million after the first movie, which we made for nothing, I would’ve mucked it up. I’ve been part of so many second units and reshoots of big franchises. And they all go to s***,” he says. “So, we watched the other franchises that threw money at just paying everybody more or on a couple of explosions. It’s great for the trailer, but there’s no meat on the bone.”

“Then we decided to spend what extra money we got to go shoot in three or four countries and be very careful in our casting,” Stahelski adds. “I’m a huge Sergio Leone fan, and there’s not a movie he’s done where every little character isn’t great. That’s what I want.”

The Future of the John Wick Universe

While the question of more John Wick movies remains up in the air, we do know that there is no shortage of content coming from the John Wick universe. Keanu Reeves is currently filming Ballerina, where he’ll star again as John Wick opposite Ana de Armas and Norman Reedus. Though, it’s unclear where the film is set in the larger timeline of the franchise.

Stahelski is serving as a producer on Ballerina. Additionally, he’s also the executive producer of The Continental, a mini-series that is based on the hotel chain featured in the John Wick movies. The project is set to air on Peacock. And it will star Mel Gibson and Cormac and Colin Woodell as a young Winston Scott.

In the meantime, be sure to check out John Wick: Chapter 4 in theaters on March 24, 2023! We’ll have our review of the film up next week!
