‘Good Fortune’ Movie: Everything We Know About Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen’s New Film

Aziz Ansari is set to direct his newest project, the movie Good Fortune, which will star Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen. Filming on the upcoming flick will begin in January 2024.

Production on the project was initially delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, but with both strikes having ended, the project is set to move forward. Here’s everything we know so far about the Good Fortune movie.

The Latest News on the Good Fortune Movie

Parks and Recreation star Aziz Ansari is making his directorial debut with Good Fortune. He is also writing and starring in the movie alongside Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen. 

“We have indeed found good fortune with this film. We love the script and believe strongly in Aziz as both a performer and a director. And when you add in Seth and Keanu – two incredible world-class talents – toplining alongside Aziz, this has the potential to be a very special film for us. We moved quickly to land this project once it was available,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake.

Good Fortune is produced by Ansari, Anthony Katagas, and Alan Yang and overseen by Brady Fujikawa and Jon Humphrey for Lionsgate. Dan Freedman, Phil Strina, John Biondo, and Matt Leonetti helped negotiate the Lionsgate deal.

Aziz Ansari’s Second Attempt at Directing

Good Fortune is Ansari’s second attempt to make his directorial debut. Ansari was previously slated to make his directorial debut on the comedy-drama Being Mortal under Searchlight. However, production for Being Mortal was indefinitely suspended following allegations over star Bill Murray’s inappropriate behavior on set.

Ansari, who went on a brief hiatus in 2018, has had a number of successful projects recently, with Master of None: Moments in Love, and a new stand-up special, Nightclub Comedian. He’s also been vocal about Hollywood’s limited opportunities for minority actors. This served to fuel Ansari into creating the award-winning Netflix series.

Ansari cited such limitations in the casting process for TV shows. The Parks and Recreation alum said that it’s usually the case that they had already chosen their token minority character. He added that it was rare to see more than one Indian or Asian in the same show. Ansari said that in TV casting, there appears to be a tendency to limit the number of Black individuals to two before a show is called a “black show.”

Ansari also cited that similar things happen for other demographics, like LGBTQ characters or female characters.

“When they cast these shows, they’re like, ‘We already have our minority guy or our minority girl.’ There would never be two Indian people in one show. With Asian people, there can be one, but there can’t be two. Black people, there can be two, but there can’t be three because then it becomes a black show. Gay people, there can be two, women there can be two, but Asian people, Indian people, there can be one, but there can’t be two,” said Ansari.

Who Is in the Good Fortune Movie Cast?

As mentioned earlier, Aziz Ansari, Keanu Reeves, and Seth Rogen are slated to star in Good Fortune. There are no announcements yet as to who else is joining the film, so we can only wait and see if anything comes out. Now that the SAG-AFTRA strike has also been resolved, more announcements on the cast will likely be made soon.

Good Fortune Movie Plot

Given how things have only recently picked up steam in Hollywood after the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the plot for Good Fortune remains under wraps. The film was affected by the WGA strikes earlier in the year. Ansari, who wrote the script, wasn’t adding any additional material as per strike rules.

However, there is a logline for the project that describes the film as “a high-concept comedy about the gig economy in Los Angeles.”

Good Fortune Release Date Speculation

There’s no release date yet for Good Fortune. We know that production is expected to start in January 2024 in Los Angeles. Filming was initially supposed to occur from May 12 to June 26, 2023. However, that was hit by the WGA strike, pushing filming back as production had to shut down due to the strike. 

We can only speculate on a 2025 release date for the Good Fortune movie. It will likely have a theatrical release, after which it may head onto a streaming service. Which streaming service is still unclear at this time.
