New Movies Coming Out This Week: June 26, 2023 – July 2, 2023
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, June 30, 2023.
Summary: In Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, archaeologist Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is near retirement and feels the world has gone by him. But evil returns in the form of an old rival, and Indy must don the hat and pick up his whip one more time to keep a powerful artifact from falling into the wrong hands. The question is, will his God-daughter (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) help or hinder this new adventure?
What to Watch For: The supporting cast includes Mads Mikkelsen, Antonio Banderas, Karen Allen, John Rhys-Davies, Toby Jones, Thomas Kretschmann, and Olivier Richters.
Word on the Street: The film is directed by two-time Academy Award-nominated filmmaker James Mangold. The movie is the first Indiana Jones film not to be directed by Steven Spielberg.
My Take: I am sad that this is the first and only Indiana Jones movie to be shot entirely on digital instead of on 35mm film.

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, June 30, 2023.
Summary: Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken is about Ruby (voiced by Ruby Gillman), who wants to be an ordinary high-school student. However, Ruby learns she comes from a fabled royal family of legendary Krakens and that her destiny lies in the depths of the waters. What to Watch For: The outstanding voice cast includes Jane Fonda, Toni Collette, Will Forte, Colman Domingo, and Nicole Byer.
Word on the Street: Co-director of the film Kirk DeMicco is an Oscar-nominated filmmaker known for his animated film The Croods (2013) and Vivo (2021).
My Take: I have high hopes for this film as one of the writers of the film is Pam Brady, who won an Emmy for the South Park TV series.
Every Body (2023)
Release Date: In theatres on Friday, June 20, 2023.
Summary: Every Body is a documentary about three individuals who are part of the intersex population. They make up one percent of the population born with bodies that do not fit typical binary notions of male or female. They have had to overcome shame, secrecy, and unauthorized surgery throughout their childhood to become successful adults.
What to Watch For: The film is from filmmaker Julie Cohen’s 2019 documentary RBG about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Word on the Street: One of the principal subjects is Sean Saifa, per his description, ‘an intersex man of color.’ Sean Saifa is known for his appearance on Nightline, where he confronted the doctor who did surgery on him when he was thirteen.
My Take: This is an important subject that so many of us know very little about.
Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, June 30, 2023.
Summary: Nimona follows a knight (voiced by Riz Ahmed) in a futuristic, medieval world, where he is framed for a crime he didn’t commit. The only one who comes to his defense is Nimona (voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz). She’s a mischievous teen, who causes mayhem everywhere she goes. The only problem is that the one who can help the knight prove his innocence, Nimona, is a shapeshifting creature he has vowed to destroy.
What to Watch For: The film is based on the popular graphic novel of the same name by ND Stevenson.
Word on the Street: A cowriter of the film is Pamela Ribon, who was just nominated for an Oscar for her animated short film My Year of Dicks.
My Take: Pamela Ribon is one of my favorite writers. I love her book Going in Circles.
