New Movies Coming Out This Week: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Eager to discover the latest releases hitting the silver screen? Wondering what exciting new movies are coming out this week?

One of the summer’s big blockbusters comes out this week when Harrison Ford busts out the hat and whip for another adventure battling villains from his past.

We also have an animated film about a teenage Kraken. Then, there’s a documentary about movie legend Rock Hudson. There’s also a quest to write a new national anthem. And last but not least, we have a movie about a knight who has to trust the person he has vowed to kill.

Here’s the full breakdown of all the new movies coming out this week on streaming and in theaters.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: June 26, 2023 – July 2, 2023

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny   (2023)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, June 30, 2023.

Summary: In Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, archaeologist Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is near retirement and feels the world has gone by him. But evil returns in the form of an old rival, and Indy must don the hat and pick up his whip one more time to keep a powerful artifact from falling into the wrong hands. The question is, will his God-daughter (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) help or hinder this new adventure?

What to Watch For: The supporting cast includes Mads Mikkelsen, Antonio Banderas, Karen Allen, John Rhys-Davies, Toby Jones, Thomas Kretschmann, and Olivier Richters.

Word on the Street: The film is directed by two-time Academy Award-nominated filmmaker James Mangold. The movie is the first Indiana Jones film not to be directed by Steven Spielberg.

My Take: I am sad that this is the first and only Indiana Jones movie to be shot entirely on digital instead of on 35mm film.

Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken

Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken   (2023)

Rating: PG

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, June 30, 2023.

Summary: Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken is about Ruby (voiced by Ruby Gillman), who wants to be an ordinary high-school student. However, Ruby learns she comes from a fabled royal family of legendary Krakens and that her destiny lies in the depths of the waters. To make matters worse, Chelsea (voiced by Annie Murphy), the most popular girl in school, is a mermaid, the arch-enemies of Kraken. What’s a girl to do?

What to Watch For: The outstanding voice cast includes Jane Fonda, Toni Collette, Will Forte, Colman Domingo, and Nicole Byer.

Word on the Street: Co-director of the film Kirk DeMicco is an Oscar-nominated filmmaker known for his animated film The Croods (2013) and Vivo (2021).

My Take: I have high hopes for this film as one of the writers of the film is Pam Brady, who won an Emmy for the South Park TV series.

Every Body

Every Body   (2023)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, June 20, 2023.

Summary: Every Body is a documentary about three individuals who are part of the intersex population. They make up one percent of the population born with bodies that do not fit typical binary notions of male or female. They have had to overcome shame, secrecy, and unauthorized surgery throughout their childhood to become successful adults.

What to Watch For: The film is from filmmaker Julie Cohen’s 2019 documentary RBG about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Word on the Street: One of the principal subjects is Sean Saifa, per his description, ‘an intersex man of color.’ Sean Saifa is known for his appearance on Nightline, where he confronted the doctor who did surgery on him when he was thirteen.

My Take: This is an important subject that so many of us know very little about.

Nimona

Rating: PG

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, June 30, 2023.

Summary: Nimona follows a knight (voiced by Riz Ahmed) in a futuristic, medieval world, where he is framed for a crime he didn’t commit. The only one who comes to his defense is Nimona (voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz). She’s a mischievous teen, who causes mayhem everywhere she goes. The only problem is that the one who can help the knight prove his innocence, Nimona, is a shapeshifting creature he has vowed to destroy.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the popular graphic novel of the same name by ND Stevenson.

Word on the Street: A cowriter of the film is Pamela Ribon, who was just nominated for an Oscar for her animated short film My Year of Dicks.

My Take: Pamela Ribon is one of my favorite writers. I love her book Going in Circles.

Anthem

Anthem   (2023)

Release Date: Premiering on Hulu on Wednesday, June 28, 2023.

Summary: The documentary Anthem is about two men, composer and pianist Kris Bowers and songwriter/producer D.J. Dahi, as they travel across the country to talk to musicians and songwriters. Their mission is to reimagine the National Anthem.

What to Watch For: The two men travel to Detroit, Mississippi, Nashville, New Orleans, Tulsa, and San Francisco to sample a wide range of musical influences.

Word on the Street: Director of the film, Peter Nicks, is known for his award-winning documentaries Homeroom (2021), The Force (2017), and The Waiting Room (2021).

My Take: I look forward to seeing the film and discovering what song they have created.

Run Rabbit Run

Run Rabbit Run   (2023)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Wednesday, June 28, 2023.

Summary: In Run Rabbit Run, Sarah (Sarah Snook) is a doctor and a mother. Sarah had a sister when she was younger who went missing at age seven and was never found. Now Mia (Lily LaTorre), Sarah’s daughter, begins claiming she is Sarah’s long-lost sister. Sarah must challenge her own beliefs and confront a ghost from the past.

What to Watch For: Sarah Snook is best known for her two-time Emmy-nominated performance as Shiv Roy on the TV series Succession.

Word on the Street: Director of the film, Diana Reid, is best known for her Emmy-nominated work on The Handmaid’s Tale TV series.

My Take: Best-selling novelist Hannah Kent wrote the film’s screenplay.

Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed

Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed   (2023)

Release Date: Premiering on HBO and Max on Wednesday, June 28, 2023.

Summary: Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed is a documentary on superstar actor Rock Hudson. Hudson was a top office draw for most of his career. Additionally, he was also known as a ‘ladies’ man’ who hid his life as a gay man for decades.

What to Watch For: The film was nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film uses home movies and interviews with various costars of Hudson’s, including Kathleen Hughes, Howard McGillin, Carole Cook, and Piper Laurie.

My Take: One of my favorite TV shows as a kid was his TV series McMillan & Wife, which he starred in with Susan Saint James.
