As part of the expanding Yellowstone universe by showrunner Taylor Sheridan, 1923 Season 2 is happening. The second season went into active development earlier this year.
Here’s what we know so far about the upcoming season. There will be spoilers ahead for season one.
1923 Comes Back for Season 2
Paramount+ confirmed back in February that 1923 will get a second season following the successful first season. 1923 became one of the most-watched series premieres in the US last two when season one aired. Season 1 premiered in December 2022, which left fans wondering if there would be a season two by the end of this year.
Taylor Sheridan told Deadline that he thinks of 1923 Season 2 as the second half of season one, adding that the coming season will wrap up the story.
“This one is different from 1883 where I had the whole thing blocked out in my head. This one, I had no idea what I was going to do. I just went on a journey myself and I’m the one that made the call to the network, which is probably the greatest call they ever got,” Sheridan says.
“Hey, I need to make more episodes to finish this story. I need to do this in two blocks. An eight-episode block and a second eight-episode block to wrap this up. I can’t wrap it up in two episodes and do the story justice. For them, it’s great because they get more content. For me, I get more runway,” Sheridan adds.
What Happened in Season 1?
In the finale of 1923 Season 1, Whitfield paid the property tax on the Dutton ranch. The Duttons then risk losing their land to him if they can’t pay him back in a span of months. How far Cara and Jacob will go to keep their ranch will likely be seen in season two. All of this while Whitfield tries to make sure the Duttons can’t pay him so he can take control of the land.
Meanwhile, the season one finale saw Spencer on his way to London after killing Arthur Jr. Spencer and Alex agree to meet in Montana, a long way away from the UK.
Jack and Elizabeth are facing a personal tragedy of their own as Elizabeth gets a miscarriage. Teonna also runs away from the Catholic boarding school with Father Renaud looking for her. Following a fight that led to Hank’s death, Teonna is also recovering from the injuries she sustained from the scuffle.
1923 Season 2 Cast
Following the events of Season 1, it’s safe to say that not everyone will be returning for 1923 Season 2. But we can expect Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren to return for Season 2 as Jacob and Cara Dutton. Ford confirmed that he would be reprising his role in the coming season to The Hollywood Reporter.
“I really didn’t realize how much work 1923 was going to be, and I absolutely feel it’s worth it. I’m excited to do another season,” said Ford.
Mirren told Town & Country that she was “very happy” that she would be returning as Cara Dutton in Season 2.
“Doing this sort of work is a journey into the unknown. I’m fascinated to see where Cara is going to go. Taylor did say she is very much of her era, she’s looking after the house. That is what her job is. But then he said, ‘Wait, things are going to happen,’ so we’ll see,” said Mirren.
Other stars expected to return include Darren Mann as Jack Dutton, Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton, Julia Schlaepfer as Alexandra, Isabel May as Elsa Dutton, Brian Geraghty as Zane Davis, Robert Patrick as Sheriff William McDowell, Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth Strafford, Jerome Flynn as Banner Creighton, Aminah Nieves as Teonna Rainwater, Timothy Dalton as Donald Whitfield, and Sebastian Roche as Father Renaud.
Someone who might not be returning is Arthur Jr., Alexandra’s former fiance. Sklenar told USA Today that he sees Arthur Jr.’s death as “accidental.” Sklenar added that Spencer “didn’t consciously mean to kill him.”
“It was kind of a reactionary move, the guy was coming at him with a gun. It happened,” said Sklenar.
Season 2 Plot
While no plot details for Season 2 are revealed, the cast has shared what they hope could happen. Just like in season one, 1923 Season 2 will be eight episodes.
Schlaepfer told the THR Presents panel, “I would love for Alex to make it to the ranch and meet the family.” The actress added, “I hope we get to see some of her own strength come out now that she’s on her own. I want to meet the Dutton women. I think that would be a lot of fun – and Teonna, we all want to meet Teonna.”
Nieves said of her character, “I just want Teonna to experience what it feels like to be a child and what it feels like to be surrounded by love.” Nieves echoed Schlaepfer’s comments about Teonna meeting the Duttons.
“I think that’ll be incredible. I want a scene with all my best friends here.”
“I’d love to see Elizabeth find a purpose that might not be her family,” said Randolph. “Her whole driving force the entire first season is her love story and wanting to be a mother. And I think there’s so much more strength to Elizabeth than what we’ve been able to see so far. So in the second season, I’d like to see her get outside, get on a horse, have some grit to her.”
Sklenar echoed Sheridan’s comments that 1923 Season 2 would be the last. This means all the stories will come to a close in the coming installment.
“No, no, it’s bookend,” said Sklenar, adding that 1923 “is still limited.”
“But I think of it as one piece – there’s just a split in the middle, but it’s all one piece. It will conclude,” said the actor.
1923 Season 2 Release Date Speculation
A release date for 1923 Season 2 hasn’t been announced yet. Due to the ongoing strikes by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA, a potential premiere for season two would be pushed back. The strikes have halted most films and television shows currently in production. 1923 is among the productions affected, as in June, it was confirmed that work on the coming season is paused indefinitely.
Only time will tell when the strikes will end, at least until the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers proposes a fair deal with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA. For now, fans can rewatch the first season, or its prequel 1883, or the four seasons of Yellowstone on Paramount+.
