The Chosen Is Coming Back for Season 4

The Chosen is returning for a fourth season following three successful seasons. The crowd-funded series depicts the life of Jesus along with his friendships to his death and resurrection. The show was renewed for a fourth season earlier this year. Despite the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, The Chosen was granted a SAG-AFTRA waiver to continue filming.

The waiver from SAG-AFTRA allowed filming of The Chosen to continue as it is an independent production. Despite having actors who are part of SAG-AFTRA in the cast, the show is not associated with the AMPTP.

Production for Season 4 wrapped in September 2023, so fans can expect to see a teaser trailer soon. The show’s official Twitter account hinted that the upcoming season is the fourth of seven planned seasons. Even if it isn’t officially confirmed, it’s safe to say we can expect more episodes coming.

The Chosen creator, Dallas Jenkins, shared during a livestream in August 2023 that the waiver granted to them by SAG-AFTRA allowed them to finish the last two weeks of filming in Goshen, Utah.

“We worked hard to accommodate all of SAG’s requests and their interim agreement,” said Jenkins in a statement to USA TODAY. “We appreciate their recognition of us as an independent as well as their hard work in this process.”

What Happened in Season 3

Previously, in The Chosen Season 3, Jesus and his disciples become strained with the new challenges they face. The ministry is confronted by increased opposition from Jewish and Roman authorities as well as conflicts among themselves, putting the foundation of Jesus’s mission at risk. Jesus and his disciples instead go on a mission to prevent disturbances caused by the impact of his teachings.

The latest season focused on Simon Peter, whose faith is tested after his wife Eden experiences a miscarriage. This tragedy comes at a time of the Purim celebrations, remembering Israel’s deliverance from Haman in the Book of Esther. In grief, Simon Peter is angry at God for the loss of their baby.

Meanwhile, Phillip and Andrew return from their mission to the eastern part of Galilee, a region marked with unrest between the Jewish and Gentile communities. Their teachings have apparently caused the unrest, and Jesus sought to address the situation. The apostles wait for Jesus to return, keen on resuming their ministry.

But more challenges continue to confront them resulting in a mission that highlights the roles each of the disciples play. Following the return of Jesus and his apostles, a transformation occurs, as Jesus delivers his teachings and attracts crowds by the thousands.

By the Season 3 finale, the feast of 5000 and the miracle of Jesus walking on water took place.

What to Expect in Season 4

For The Chosen Season 4, expect more stories from the Bible to be brought to life, according to Angel Studios. Given what happened in Season 3, it’s safe to say the coming season will pick up on the aftermath of the miracles Jesus performed and the challenges he and his disciples faced.

“It doesn’t fit into one bible verse but there’s a lot of the disciples now really starting to wonder where is this going. There is a lot of finding your place and so much weight this season,” said Jenkins about Season 4.

During the live stream with Jenkins and Roumie, Jenkins said the whole team had 76 days of filming this year and that they were ready to go home. Roumie added that he was ready to go on a break. When pressed about the differences between filming Seasons 3 and 4, Jenkins said Season 3 was more challenging as they were filming in the fields for long periods of time.

Jenkins said filming Season 4 was more intense and hinted that the upcoming season would be the show’s most impactful spiritually and emotionally. When pressed which Season 4 episode he thinks is the most impactful, Jenkins said it would be Episode 7. The show’s creator added that it’s because the questions about Jesus’ emotions and why he had to suffer are explored in that episode.
