‘The Chosen’ Season 5: Everything We Know So Far

The Chosen Season 5

Depicting the life of Jesus Christ and his followers, The Chosen has gone through four successful seasons, including a theatrical release. Given the events of the latest season, viewers are wondering if the show will return for a Season 5?

Here’s everything we know so far about a possible The Chosen Season 5. Possible spoilers ahead for Season 4.

Will The Chosen Get a Season 5?

Nothing has been officially, publically confirmed yet, but The Chosen getting a fifth season seems likely. This is because, compared to most shows that a studio produces, The Chosen is largely crowdfunded, relying on donations to be able to produce a season. The show’s official website revealed early in February 2024 that funding had already begun for Season 5.

However, it remains to be determined if the box office revenue will also be used to fund the upcoming season. This is because the first few episodes of The Chosen Season 4 were given a theatrical release, bringing in a good profit despite rivaling studio releases.

Creator Dallas Jenkins has previously said that he hopes to go through a full seven seasons to tell the story of Jesus.

“Yes, we have a Bible, literally, for the show. But we also have a lowercase bible. We have plotted out the seven seasons. If you are watching on The CW, as people are wrapping up Season 2 and heading into Season 3. They should know that when we started, we knew where we were going. We knew how this would end. We’re thinking the seventh season now,” Jenkins told Deadline in October 2023.

In a video message to fans, Jenkins also seemed to confirm the show’s seven-season run.

“We must keep spending money that is generated for the next season. As I talk to you right now, we have three more seasons left, along with all the translating, the marketing, and keeping our company going just for this show alone. So, we have done four seasons already, but there is three more to go,” said Jenkins.

Jenkins will definitely return as the showrunner and co-writer with Ryan Swanson and Tyler Thompson.

Season 4 Gets Widespread Theatrical Release

It wouldn’t be surprising that The Chosen Season 4 would get renewed based on viewership alone. The show’s widespread theatrical release for the current season was done through Lionsgate distributing the show.

“The response to Season 4 has been overwhelming so far, which provides a nice lift for us as we head into filming,” Jenkins told Variety in March 2024. “Of course, we’re about to try to portray the most famous week in the history of humans, so the euphoria from the previous season never lasts long. The entire Season 6 will cover one day, so covering one week in Season 5 feels luxurious.”

In February, The Chosen opened at no.2 at the domestic box office, bringing in $8.6 million in six days. Just in time for Holy Week, Season 4’s theatrical run was extended from March 28, 2024, to March 30, 2024. The eight episodes of Season 4 would be spread out in three days. The show’s first two episodes were also available for screening at churches through a grant from the Come and See Foundation.

The Chosen was also released theatrically worldwide in 30 more territories. Most recently, the show’s Season 4 premiered in theaters in Brazil.

“One of the things we’re doing differently this year is releasing all of the episodes in theater,” said The Chosen’s executive vice president of distribution and marketing. “It’s innovative, it’s disruptive. Last year, we did a little bit of that with Season 3. It has been a wonderful experience for fans to watch it in community together, laughing at the jokes and being able to cry together.”

What to Expect from Next Season

For a potential The Chosen Season 5, viewers can turn to the Bible for clues about what happens next. It will likely be about Jesus’ continued efforts to spread his gospel in the land amidst growing opposition. Because Dallas Jenkins has outlined a seven-season plan for The Chosen, more escalating tensions can be expected for Season 5.

Jenkins said that the upcoming episodes of The Chosen are expected to get “even more real.” In the interview with Deadline, Jenkins said that having a plan allows him and the creative team the “freedom to play within” their limitations.

“I just finished writing Season 5. Because we know where the story goes and allows us the freedom to play within those boundaries. So yeah, we do have this plotted out, just not all of the scripts are written just yet,” said Jenkins.

Separately, Jenkins told Variety in March 2024 that he’s looking forward to working on the set for the Garden of Gethsemane. In the Bible, the garden is the place where Jesus is betrayed and ultimately arrested.

“No one’s ever seen what we’ve got planned for that sequence,” said Jenkins.

The Chosen Season 5 Release Date

Because The Chosen Season 5 isn’t publically confirmed yet, there is no official release date for now. However, production was expected to start on March 26, 2024, according to Production Weekly. Filming will continue through May 17, 2024, in Midlothian, Texas, and Goshen, Utah. Jenkins, however, revealed that filming is expected to begin in early April, according to DeseretNews.

Among the plans for Seasons 6 and 7 are the Crucifixion and Resurrection, respectively. In a January 2024 interview with Newsweek, Jenkins also expressed hopes to make a film on the Resurrection.

“We’re hoping also to potentially do a feature film within that whole storyline, so we’ve got some plans for that we’re developing now,” said Jenkins.

For now, fans can rewatch the first three seasons of The Chosen on the show’s official website for free. Season 4 has been released in theaters as well. There is no word yet on whether Season 4 will air on The CW.
